tonight I watched on ESPN2 as my school, UNLV, knocked off the #1 team in college basketball North Carolina 90-80!
it is the biggest win in years for UNLV even though UNLV has made the NCAA tournament 4 of the past 5 years
North Carolina (who has 3 likely 1st round picks in Harrison Barnes- perhaps the next overall #1 pick, Tyler Zeller, and John Henson) hurt themselves badly tonight at the free throw line as they missed 13 free throws and will give up their #1 ranking- probably to Kentucky who they play next Saturday in the college basketball game of the week.
meanwhile UNLV is now 7-0 and should enter the new rankings once they are announced on Monday!

I did watch some of this too Mr. Vegas - huge win. I did not know too that Stacey Augmon is now a UNLV assistant coach. yeah, this past offseason Stacey Augmon left his job as an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets to go back home to UNLV to become an assistant coach also, attending the game last night was Shabazz Muhammad who is the #1 recruit in the Class of 2012 and who plays high school basketball here in Las Vegas. In addition to UNLV (whose head coach is the brother of Shabazz Muhammad's current high school head coach,) Muhammad also has offers from UCLA, USC, Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, Memphis, and Texas A&M. Muhammad has said he won't make his decision until the Spring- but last night's victory over #1 North Carolina certainly didn't hurt UNLV's chances of keeping him here in his hometown of Las Vegas. Interestingly, of all those schools I listed making official offers to Shabazz Muhammad, he has only made an official visit so far to USC- who UNLV actually defeated by double digits on Friday the day before they defeated North Carolina.

Although it unfortunately was not televised here, a few days after knocking off #1 North Carolina, UNLV (now #18 in one poll and #20 in the other poll) won again tonight in a 2 overtime game on the road against a team who has made the past 2 NCAA Tournaments- UC Santa Barbara. After winning back to back Mountain West Conference Player of the Week awards, Mike Moser tonight scored 34 points in 36 minutes. UCLA's loss is UNLV's gain as UNLV improves to 8-0.

Tonight UNLV scored 124 points- the most UNLV has scored in a game since 1991- to defeat Central Arkansas 124-75. Although it is the school that produced Scottie Pippen, Central Arkansas really is not very good right now and their head coach "Big Nasty" Corliss Williamson (who led Arkansas to the 1994 title before playing 12 years in the NBA where he won an NBA Championship as a member of the Pistons) said in today's edition of the LVRJ after he watched UNLV knock off then #1 North Carolina on ESPN last month "I called my assistant coach and said, 'What were you thinking when you scheduled this game?' " ;D perhaps Corliss Williamson at some point though can get Central Arkansas turned around to give their opponents the "40 Minutes of Hell" he gave his opponents when he was on those great Arkansas Razorbacks teams coached by Nolan Richardson in the mid 1990s But for now, my school #19 UNLV gets an easy 49 point victory (they were favored by 31) to improve to 14-2.

Yesterday was a great day for my school UNLV as they rose to #12 in both polls while also getting McDonald's All American Khem Birch as a freshman transfer from Pittsburgh!
According to Adam Finkelstein at ESPN, if Birch was part of the national 2012 recruiting class he (because Andre Drummond got out of school a year early and went to UConn) would have been ranked ahead of every single 2012 recruit in the country!
Khem Birch becomes the first McDonald's All American to go to UNLV since Larry Johnson and Elmore Spencer!
the Rebels, however, do have a test this Saturday when it is #12 UNLV at #22 San Diego State (the Aztecs in recent years have played really well against UNLV.)

#14 UNLV 65, #13 San Diego State 63 At the sold out (18,000 plus) Thomas & Mack Center, my school UNLV today defeated San Diego State who had won the past 6 games against UNLV and who had won 9 of the past 10 games against UNLV (San Diego State is leaving after next year to play in a better conference, but they still lost today to UNLV who no matter what conference they end up in they are going to cause problems in the West during basketball season. )

I don't know if # 14 UNLV will rise much in the polls next week, but they should at least rise by one spot since they defeated #13 San Diego State today!

today my school UNLV got a 5 seed and they play California (who they defeated earlier this year) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament!
on a side note, the MWC got 4 teams in as it really is one of the best conferences. Surprised to see last year's champion Kentucky not included- but I think they will make the NIT.
