Don't forget CC; Archie is the reason that Peyton ended up in Indy to begin with. He told San Diego if they were to have drafted Peyton, he would not have signed with them. Forcing them to go with Ryan Leaf instead. Now, a lot of people said that SD would have taken Leaf anyway, but I'm not buying that. I think you are talking about Eli Manning in 2004? Chargers instead went with Philip Rivers?

That's why I brought up Archie in thinking he'd be the one to voice his opinion on Peyton and say it's better the Colts not draft Luck, but we'll see soon enough what the much needed help Colts do...

Actually in 1998, Indy had the first pick and were thinking of taking Ryan Leaf leaving San Diego, drafting second to take Peyton Manning. But Archie came out and said that if San Diego chose Manning, he would not sign with them. I was wrong about San Diego drafting first that year. But I'm quite certain that Archie swayed the draft that year. I just can't find proof of that yet.

But I'm quite certain that Archie swayed the draft that year. I just can't find proof of that yet. Bill Polian is on record saying they (the Colts) didn't officially decide to take Manning until a few hours prior to the draft. For what it's worth: N.F.L. DRAFT DAY '98; Colts Agonize to the End, Then Pick Manning By MIKE FREEMAN Published: April 19, 1998
Sometime after midnight, in the early hours of yesterday morning, Leigh Steinberg, the agent for Washington State quarterback Ryan Leaf, got a telephone call from Jim Irsay, the Indianapolis Colts' owner. Irsay hinted that the Colts would probably select Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning with the first pick in the National Football League draft, but it was not definite.
Indeed, Colts General Manager Bill Polian and Coach Jim Mora had not decided who they were going to take. The two men went back and forth for much of the night. Manning or Leaf, Leaf or Manning? They were using a point system, and it was so close that the decision was not made until later yesterday morning, the day of the draft. The Colts decided to take the polished Manning.
''There was arguing going on,'' said a high-ranking team official who was involved in the decision. ''It was passionate, it was healthy, but it was intense.''
Meanwhile, in the bowels of Madison Square Garden, Manning was calm, munching on some chips with his father, Archie. He was told shortly before the draft began that he would be going to Indianapolis. At about 11:45 A.M., some 15 minutes before the start of the draft, Steinberg was officially informed by Irsay that Leaf would not be selected by the Colts. That was fine with Leaf and his family, because it was Leaf's desire to go to the San Diego Chargers, anyway.

Well, maybe I was wrong. I could have sworn that I remember Archie telling SD the same thing in '98 because I remember thinking in '04, "Here we go again with Archie meddling". Oh well.

I didn't know Indy were brainstorming over Peyton or Leaf back then, I didn't really pay attention but knew Archie was involved with Eli forcing the Chargers to trade the pick. Anyway, we all know that the Colts need help and the ball could be in their court come draft time in either to draft Luck or not...
I just saw John Clayton mention that Peyton being on the active roster and could petition to remain on it for the remainder of the season in hopes he might return and two possibly win a few games to move Indy out of the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. There are a lot of "if's" in this topic and until the draft there won't be a true and known answer...

Manning's injury isn't career threatening and he will be back next year. The Colts signed him to a multi-year deal and will not sign Luck as "It's not broke, so don't fix it" type of thing.
I read about Peyton's dilemma as well on ESPN.com today and it said that between Leaf and Manning that it came down to a coin flip and Manning was chosen.
I've always despised Eli for being such a whiny little bitch when SD picked him. Sure he won a Super Bowl, but I still think that Brees/Rivers are much better QBs than he is. Just my .02

With their loss today to the Jaguars, the Colts got the #1 pick in the draft.

Probably the worst situation for Luck to get as well.....I don't care what people say, it's going to be bad one way or another.

I am not sure if Luck will be the 2nd coming of any of the Mannings, or of Leaf, so I am not sure if the Colts should choose him or not. BUT, the Colts fans will not be willing to sit through another season like this one. We will endure this because Peyton is not around. But if it lasts for 2 seasons then heads will roll.
