The OWW Undisputed Debate League has been a fun, competitive and popular concept with our community since it's inception into our forum in 2008. Unfortunately Undisputed Debate League has experienced a decline in numbers due to members understandably prioritizing real life commitments ahead of their debates.
We are reaching out to our OWW Genesis community, affiliates and supporters for the opportunity to join Undisputed and participate in a series of debates.
If you have any interest in becoming apart of Undisputed and you are not yet a member of our forum, then please register first on OWW Genesis before proceeding to becoming a member of our the debate league.
For further queries, please private message OWW Genesis member Goldenboy79 or email forum@onlineworldofwrestling.com

forums.onlineworldofwrestling.com/showthread.php?11123-Tribute-To-Fallen-Wrestling-Heroes-11-Years-Today-Remembering-Gorilla-Monsoon&p=124024#post124024
Today marks the 11th anniversary since the passing of pro wrestling great Robert "Gorilla Monsoon" Marella. The origins of Marella’s sporting career dates back to his years in high school where he excelled at amateur wrestling, football and track and field, Marella weighed 300 pounds at the time. Marella continued pursuing wrestling and track and field at Ithaca College, New York, Marella came second place at the 1959 NCAA Wrestling Championships weighing in at 350 pounds. Marella held many wrestling and track and field records at Ithaca. Marella was inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1973.
Marella made the transition to pro wrestling following his amateur success at the NCCA Championships. Marella was now at 400 pounds; a weight he maintained for the rest of his career. Marella billed himself as Gino Marella, an Italian-American fan favourite who serenaded the New York crowds with his singing before his matches. In the ring, Marella was quick, agile and strong; a combo which won many fans over. Marella later traveled to Calgary, Alberta, Canada where he gained extensive training from the legendary Stu Hart and competed in Stu’s promotion Stampede Wrestling.
Marella returned to New York around the time the WWWF was formed. Marella bought shares into the WWWF becoming a partner and promoter. Marella became a heel and changed his name/gimmick to Gorilla Monsoon; a ferocious monster hailing from China. The gimmick makeover proved to be a success with crowds as big, foreign brutes were the preferred villains of that time. Monsoon was a frequent challenger for the WWWF Title held at the time by Bruno Sammartino. Bruno/Monsoon headlined Madison Square Garden events throughout the 1960s.
In 1969 Monsoon once again became a babyface, Monsoon’s return to fan favourite made him a bigger draw. Throughout the 1970s, Monsoon’s popularity was used to put over villains who being groomed to challenge the WWWF Champion. When Superstar Billy Graham became the first villain in the WWWF to have a lengthy title reign, it gave many fan favourites such as Monsoon the opportunity to headline WWWF events with Graham. Monsoon was also involved in an altercation with boxing great Muhammad Ali on WWWF TV which made headlines throughout the sporting world.
Behind the scenes, Monsoon was a trusted friend and business partner of Vince McMahon Sr. Monsoon was given the role of locker room 'police'; an important job that assured that the locker room was kept in order. Monsoon's reputation for being a shooter earned him the fear and the respect of the locker room. One name in particular who felt the raft of the Gorilla was none other than Bruiser Brody. Brody was notorious for instigating trouble with promoters where ever he went, this one altercation with Gorilla resulted in Brody being blackballed from the WWWF for the rest of his career.
In 1980 Gorilla Monsoon retired from active wrestling, he spent his remaining months of competition putting over Ken Petera as a solidified Intercontinental Champion, Monsoon also maintained his locker room presence despite retiring from the ring. Gorilla Monsoon transitioned to announcing, taking over Vince McMahon Jr. as the WWF’s lead Play by Play Announcer. Monsoon anchored monthly WWF events from Madison Square Garden and the Boston Gardens. Gorilla Monsoon along with colour commentator Jesse Ventura were the exclusive announce team for WWF pay per view events during the '80’s. Monsoon’s voice is connected to many ground breaking matches and moments in wrestling that helped shape the industry, Monsoon was the voice of WrestleMania during it's glory years.
Monsoon hosted Prime Time Wrestling and Wrestling Challenge in his weekly announce duties. Monsoon’s announcing partner for PTW and Challenge was Bobby the Brain Heenan, the famous duo would grow to become one of wrestling’s favourite announce teams.
In 1993, Gorilla Monsoon stepped down from his role as lead play by play announcer making way for Jim Ross. Jim Ross gave full credit to Monsoon for coaching him to adapt to the WWF’s style of announcing and being the first to befriend him at time when he was viewed by many in the WWF as the enemy because of his previous years spent at NWA/WCW. Monsoon handled the secondary roles staying on as host of Wrestling Challenge, hosting the Update segment on WWF Superstars, working for Coliseum Home Video and filling in on Monday Night Raw when needed. Monsoon reprised his role as lead pbp announcer at King of the Ring 1994 and provided colour commentary at Survivor Series ’94.
In 1995 after the retirement of longtime WWF President Jack Tunney, Monsoon took over the role of the figurehead Interim-President. Monsoon would find his hands full with the reputable bully Vader in the coming months; Monsoon suspended Vader after repeatedly attacking a defenseless wrestler and a referee. Vader would retaliate by attacking Gorilla Monsoon resulting in Monsoon being sidelined for 2 months before returning at WrestleMania XII to be announced as the official WWF President.
In 1998, Gorilla Monsoon relinquished his role as WWF President due to health problems. Monsoon returned to his announcing duties on WWF international broadcasts. Monsoon was still referred to as President during broadcasts and he briefly played a 'heel' during shows demonstrating his support for Mr. McMahon (the TV character)..
Monsoon’s health problems had deteriorated, and rather sought more treatment, Monsoon decided to forgo it and live out what time he had left.
At WrestleMania XV, Gorilla Monsoon made his final public WWF appearance as a judge for the Brawl 4 All fight between Bart Gunn and Butterbean. Monsoon appeared frail and had lost a lot of weight almost being unrecognizable if had it not been for the introduction by ring announcer Howard Finkel. As Gorilla Monsoon was being introduced by an emotional Finkel, the crowd responded with a classy standing ovation, an amazing rare gesture at a time where wrestling crowds normally reacted in chants and screams.
On October 6, 1999, Gorilla Monsoon passed away of heart failure due to complications with diabetes. Longtime friend and colleague Bobby the Brain Heenan was now working for the WWF’s competition WCW. Bobby Heenan fought back his emotions as he honored his beloved friend on behalf of the WCW organization. In recent years the WWE paid tribute to Monsoon with the christening Santino Marella (Marella being the real life surname of Monsoon).
Today we honour the memory of the late Gorilla Monsoon.
Rest In Peace Robert "Gorilla Monsoon" Marella
