LWF WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH--BEST TWO OUT OF THREE FALLS
DORY FUNK JR. (low-b) beat Champion “SAMOAN SUBMISSION MACHINE” SAMOA JOE two falls to one (Referee: Bronko Lubich)
--Joe won the first fall by countout when both men were fighting on the floor, and Joe managed to beat the count back into the ring. Funk took Fall Number Two by submission with the Indian Deathlock. Funk then won the third fall with the Abdominal Stretch, and Referee Lubich awarded him the belt. Terry Funk ran out to help his brother celebrate. However, Senior Official Johnny “Red Shoes” Dugan came out and conferred with Lubich. Dugan then huddled with Ring Announcer Finkel, who then announced that, due to the countout in the first fall and LWF bylaws stating that title matches cannot have a disqualification or countout unless otherwise stated beforehand, the match ceased being for the title after the first fall; therefore, Samoa Joe is still the champion. The Funks protested, to no avail.
Backstage, Okerlund spoke with LWF General Manager Bill Watts, who confirmed Dugan’s ruling. As they were talking, the Funks arrived from ringside. An irate Terry Funk complained that the rules weren’t made clear and that his brother should be the champ. Watts said Dory deserved another chance, and he would talk it over with the LWF Board Of Directors, all of which were in town for tonight’s event, first thing in the morning. Samoa Joe came into the picture and said that, even if the title change had held up, he had no one to blame but himself for submitting, not once, but twice, and agreed that Dory deserved another shot. He said, “Anytime, anywhere, I’ll be more than happy to wrestle you again, Funk, and may the best man win!”
LWF MAIN EVENT--RUMBLE ROYALE
--The winner of this match is promised a World title shot in the near future. The match starts with two men; after that, a new wrestler comes in every two minutes. Elimination is by going out over the top rope and touching the floor with both feet. (Referees at ringside: Mark Curtis, Johnny “Red Shoes” Dugan, David Manning and Tommy Young)
