New Era Wrestling: Card 67- Hartford, CT:
The show opens with the usual video highlight package showing high points of the action from last week, with emphasis on the title matches. We then join our broadcast team of Mike and Frankie, ready to go.
"Mad" Mike Cantrell: "Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to New Era Wrestling! With me, as always, is my broadcasting partner Frankie Saddler."
Frankie Saddler: "Hiya folks!"
Cantrell: "We have quite a night of action lined up for you fine folks tonight, yes indeed. Former North American champions Harley Race and Big Superstar will square off tonight in an effort to see which one of them gets the first crack at new champion Roddy Piper... but that's not all. Not by a long shot. Junior Heavyweight champion Austin Aries will make his historic first defense of the title here tonight, as well. Tonight's main event, though, will be a return match from Total War 2 as the Road Warriors seek to regain the Tag Team titles from the team of Rob Van Dam and Sabu. All that said, the other matches on tonight's card look to be pretty good, as well, so you won't want to miss any of it."
Saddler: "I can't wait, Mike."
Cantrell: "Well, let's get started, then! Cindy Shepherd is waiting down in the ring to get things started...."
For the first time tonight, we join the lovely Miss Cindy Shepherd in the ring so she can introduce...
*The Patriot v. Mister X- The battle of the masked men starts quickly, with the Patriot going for a headlock and transitioning it into a hip toss. Mister X is slow to get up and he's caught in a devastating power slam by the newcomer. He's down and the Patriot goes for a lateral press, yet only gets a two count for his trouble. The patriotic masked man from Columbia, South Carolina continues his assault with a lag drop and another power slam. Mister X is battered and wobbly on his feet afterward, but he's hardly out of this contest. A standing dropkick from the Patriot puts him down hard, however, and it's quickly followed by the UNCLE SLAM and an easy three count and the victory. Winner of the match: The Patriot!
Cantrell: "Quite an auspicious debut for the new masked man. We'll have to keep an eye on him, I think."
Saddler: "Sure, Mike. I don't know how far he'll get, though. It looked for a bit there that he was having a little trouble dispatching Mister X. Mister X!"
Cantrell: "You know, Frankie... he could have just been trying to make more of a show of it."
Saddler: "I hadn't thought of that, actually."
Cantrell: "Well, there you have it. I agree, though: We'll have to see this Patriot take on some stiffer competition before we start lining him up for title shots. Let's get back to the action. What do you say?"
Saddler: "I'm good with that. Sure."
We rejoin Miss Cindy in the ring as she introduces...
*The James Gang (B.G. James & Kip James) v. Chris Candido & Giant Bernard w/ Tammy Lynn Sytch- Once again, Tammy has gotten her hands on a mic of her own and she talks up her men's virtues on their way to the ring. The former tag champs in the James Gang don't seem all too intimidated by any of this, however. The two teams confer quietly amongst themselves for a moment before deciding on who will be starting the match. Things begin with Kip James in against Chris Candido and the match is on! The tow men lock up and it takes a moment or two of testing each other before Candido gets the upper hand with an Irish Whip into the ropes. James rebounds and Candido drops down to let him go over him and gets up just in time to eat a running back elbow from James. Kip follows up with a power slam that takes the wind out of Candido and leaves him open for a lateral press. Kip makes the cover and the referee makes the count, only to have the whole thing broken up by Bernard. Kip tags out to B.G. who comes in with some shuffling punches. Candido is hurt but he's far from out, leading B.G. to follow up with a forearm smash and a standing dropkick that sends Candido crashing back into his own corner, allowing the big man to tag himself into the match. Bernard isn't playing around, going for a running avalanche on B.G. right away! James is clearly hurt and he stumbles into a short-arm clothesline that sends him crashing to the mat in a heap. The big man from Boston looks like he wants to end things quickly, hitting B.G. with a BERNARD DRIVER and a nonchalant cover. James shocks him (and Tammy at ringside) by managing to kick out just in the nick of time before the three count. Bernard continues his assault with a spinning wreck pancake that flattens James once again. Candido is tagged back in and he hits a top rope hurancanrana, leaving B.G. in another pinning predicament. Candido goes for a cover and both Kip and Bernard hit the ring on a collision course. Once again there's a skin-of-his-teeth kick out that leaves Tammy ranting and raving in her team's corner. B.G. gets hit by another top rope hurancanrana and is once again in danger of getting covered until Kip hits the ring, attacking Chris from behind, allowing B.G. to get to his feet so the pair can execute a vicious double-team powerbomb on him. Tammy and Bernard, in trying to make the referee aware of the shenanigans, make it so he doesn't see the offense. He turns around only to see that B.G. is now covering Chris and he jumps down to make his count. Bernard hits the ring to make the save, but he's cut off by an intervening Kip James. Candido manages to kick out at two, anyway (much to Tammy's relief). B.G. tags out to Kip, who comes in looking smug, going for a press slam. Candido hits the mat hard, but he's awfully close to his own corner... and once again Bernard tags himself into the match. Kip is subjected to a short-arm clothesline that sends him down to the mat, easy prey for a lateral press. Bernard makes the cover but only gets a two count for his efforts. Tammy is yelling at the referee as Bernard goes back to work by tossing Kip out of the ring. Kip takes as much time as he can to recover, but he has to crawl back into the ring to meet the referee's count to avoid the loss. Bernard is waiting for him and catches him with a Bernard Bomb as soon as he gets to his feet. Kip is flattened and once more Bernard goes for a cover, this time getting the three count and the win. This one is over, much to Tammy's joy and relief. Tammy and her "boys" celebrate in the ring for a moment before clearing out as B.G. tends to his fallen partner. Winners of the match: Candido & Bernard!
Cantrell: "That was tag team wrestling at it's finest, Frankie."
Saddler: "I can't help but agree with you on that, Mike. One of the better matches we've seen here in N.E.W. in recent weeks, I'd say."
Cantrell: "A bold statement, but I concur."
Saddler: "I can only hope that tonight's Tag Team title match can live up to the what we just saw, Mike."
Cantrell: "I'm sure it will. At least, I hope it will. So, our next match is going to have serious consequences here in New Era Wrestling, Frankie. The match will determine the order in which these two men will be getting shots at the North American title currently held by "Rowdy" Roddy Piper."
Saddler: "A lot at stake, Mike."
Cantrell: "Indeed. Let's head down to ringside and the start of the match...."
It's time once again to hear the introductions from Miss Cindy and she brings us...
*"Handsome" Harley Race v. Big Superstar w/ Jimmy Hart- Hart's jacket is done up to match Superstar's black and white ring gear and he and his charge take their time getting to the ring, aggravating the Hell out of the fans. Race, for his part, waits patiently for the showboating to end. The match finally starts and Superstar starts off with an attempt at a clothesline that Race ducks and counters with a forearm slug. Race follows up quickly with a vertical suplex but he doesn't quite get the results he was looking for. A falling knee drop from Race sets Big Superstar up for another vertical suplex and this time the big man stays down. Race patiently waits for him to get back to his feet, though, and hits him with a back suplex that leaves Superstar laid out perfectly for a lateral press. Race goes for a cover and it looks like he's got this match won when Jimmy Hart hits the apron to distract him and the referee. Big Superstar has time to use Hart's megaphone as a weapon, crashing it into the back of Race's head, putting him down. The ref, still dealing with Hart, missed the whole thing so the fans boo loudly. The situation dealt with, Big Superstar picks Race up in a piledriver and looks to end things, but he gets too cocky with a lazy cover and Race kicks out at two. Race is still reeling from the blow to the head and the piledriver that followed it and is easy prey for Big Superstar's famous SUPERSTAR DROP. This time, Hart's man gets the three count and the victory, ensuring that he'll be the next man to face Roddy Piper for the belt. The fans are not happy and they voice their opinions as Big Superstar and Jimmy Hart celebrate while further taunting the fans. Winner of the match: Big Superstar!
Cantrell: "I don't know what to say, Frankie. We just witnessed a robbery here tonight!"
Saddler: "Too bad we can't call the police, am I right?"
Cantrell: "You know what? It is my fondest wish that someday... someone teaches that rat Jimmy Hart a lesson."
Saddler: "This is wrestling, Mike. Hart's bad karma will catch up to him eventually."
Cantrell: "We can hope. Anyway... it's time for Amy's Corner."
Saddler: "Oh! Good! Amy? It's all yours!"
Next, we go backstage to the set of Amy's Corner where our hostess is looking amazing as always.
Amy Lee: "Thanks, guys! Been quite a night so far, huh? A lot has already happened tonight and we're only halfway through the card! Two title matches will close out the night, but we still have to hear from the ladies tonight, as well. Since I'm involved in one of those title matches... I'd like to keep this short and sweet, but we'll see how it goes. My guest tonight is the man that won the big title shot battle royal at the last pay per view... Terry "Bamm Bamm" Gordy! Come on out and join us, if you would, sir!"
Amy is then joined by Gordy, who is looking pretty happy with himself.
Terry Gordy: "Thank you Amy Lee! That was quite the introduction, I gotta say."
Lee: "I try."
Gordy: "I know what you're gonna ask me already, lil' darlin'... what title is big, bad Terry Gordy going to set his sights on, am I right?"
Lee: "You are very much right about that, Mister gordy."
Gordy: "Please. Call me "Bamm Bamm". Well, to answer your question... I'm going to make a little introduction of my own: my tag team partner... "Doctor Death" Steve Williams! Get on out here, Steve!"
Amy and Gordy are joined by Williams, who greets his partner with a handshake and a big, evil grin.
Steve Williams: "Amy Lee! What you see before you is the Miracle Violence Connection. What you see before you is the team that's soon to be holding the tag team titles of New Era Wrestling!"
Gordy: "Y'all can bank on that!"
Lee: "Wow. That's a big announcement, guys. You know... we've had the big Title Shot Battle Royals a few times now and no one has ever targeted the tag titles before now."
Gordy: "Amy Lee, I guess that makes us trendsetters, don't it?"
Williams: "I like that. Trendsetters."
Lee: "Yes, indeed, gentlemen. You are the first team to be in this position. I have to say... this is not what I was expecting."
Williams: "I imagine it's not, little lady. Imagine how those two scrawny little punks currently holding OUR BELTS must feel! Tonight they have to get through the Road Warriors only to have us waiting in the wings!"
Gordy: "They ain't gonna know what hit 'em, Doc!"
Williams: "No. They sure ain't. I truly think that we're gonna have us some fun, Bamm Bamm!"
Gordy: "Hell yes we are! Let's get outta here and see if we can make the rest of the boys sweat a little before the match tonight!"
Williams: "You got it!"
With that, Amy Lee is left alone on the set of her show, looking deep in thought.
Lee: "Okay, guys. That's some big news. Back to you two up front!"
We then rejoin Mike and Frankie up front.
Cantrell: "Well, that really was big news, Amy."
Saddler: "You know what this means, Mike? It means that the already stacked tag team division just got put on notice."
Cantrell: "You could say that, sure. I'm sure a lot of people are going to be paying close attention to tonight's Main Event, now. More so than before, I mean."
Saddler: "Things are getting really exciting, now! Whoo boy!"
Cantrell: "You said it, partner. Speaking of exciting... our next match features the ladies in action."
Saddler: "Yeah, but April Hunter's not involved so how exciting can it really get?"
Cantrell: "I'm sure the ladies in the match will be happy to show you. Let's go to the ring."
Once again we go to ringside for the introductions of...
*Nora Greenwald v. Joyce Grable- Introductions made, Nora opens things up with a forearm smash that sets Grable up for a snap suplex. Grable hits the mat and the wind is taken right out of her sails, allowing Greenwald to roll over into a lateral press, scoring a three count and ending the match almost as soon as it's begun. After the match, Nora tries to offer Joyce her hand as a show of respect, but Grable is angry and swats it away. Winner of the match: Nora Greenwald!
Cantrell: "Well. That was quick."
Saddler: "Hardly exciting, Mike."
Cantrell: "How can you say that, Frankie? Clearly we just saw Nora Greenwald take a giant step toward getting a shot at Leilani Kai's Women's title!"
Saddler: "Sure she did. She's going to have to get through April hunter before that, though. And quite frankly? I don't think she's got what it takes, Mike."
Cantrell: "She hears you say that, pal... she just might be inclined to show you a thing or two."
Saddler: "I... well, okay. I'm not saying that Nora Greenwald isn't good, Mike. I'm just saying that April Hunter is just that much better."
Cantrell: "So you say. Anyway, the first of tonight's title shots is up next. You ready?"
Saddler: "We get to see some more of amy Lee, so of course I'm ready, Mike!"
Cantrell: "Okay, then. Let's get to it, then.
Yet again, we go to ringside for Miss Cindy to bring us...
*Gorgeous George w/ Cherie Dupré v. Austin Aries (Junior Heavyweight Champion) w/ Amy Lee- In a very atypical move on his part, the usual stalling tactics by George and Cherie are cast aside so that George can attack the champion before Cindy's introductions are even finished, locking on the Gorgeous Grip! Aries is clearly in trouble and very nearly has to submit before he makes it to the ropes to break the hold. Amy Lee looks on in dismay as the Human Orchid locks on a figure four leglock onto the champion! Aries is in deep trouble and in danger of losing his title onhis very first ever defense when out of nowhere, Tyler Black hits the ring and delivers a CURB STOMP on Gorgeous George, drawing a disqualification for the champion! As Black heads to the back as the referee sorts out the tow men actually involved in the match, he gestures toward his former tag team partner, imitating putting a belt around his own waist. George is livid with the referee when he comes around, but is happy to have his hand raised nonetheless. Amy Lee expresses some concern over the condition of her champion, but Aries seems to be in no serious trouble. Winner of the match by Disqualification: Gorgeous George!
Cantrell: "What the Hell was that, Frankie?!?"
Saddler: "I think that Tyler Black has just thrown his hat into the ring, so to speak."
Cantrell: "Well, I suppose that's one way to get the champion's attention... but he's also deprived Gorgeous George of what quite possibly could have been a victory and a championship."
Saddler: "I guess so, sure."
Cantrell: "As we learned last year, Frankie... Gorgeous George isn't one to take that sort of thing lying down."
Saddler: "Maybe not, Mike. But... the way the match ended... I'm sure he'll get himself another shot at the belt."
Cantrell: "I'm sure. He may want a shot at Tyler Black even more, though."
Saddler: "Maybe. That would be a mistake in my opinion, though."
Cantrell: "Agreed. But this is New Era Wrestling. What makes you think any of the men involved in this... this mess... will be all that rational?"
Saddler: "Well, until they cool off, I doubt any of them will. But that's why George and Aries have managers, Mike."
Cantrell: "You might have a point there, partner."
Saddler: "Heh. Yeah."
Cantrell: "Okay. Time for the Main Event! Ready?"
Saddler: "Ready!"
For the last time tonight, we join the lovely Miss Cindy in the ring so she can bring us...
*Main Event: The Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) w/ Paul Ellering v. The House of Extreme (Rob Van Dam & Sabu; Tag Team Champions) w/ Bill Alfonso- The Road Warriors hit the ring running, but Van Dam and Sabu see them coming and get out of Dodge pretty quickly, avoiding a serious beating. Senior Official Bud Gordon quickly restores order and gets the tow teams into their respective corners. Animal is in the ring to start for his team, in against Sabu. The bell rings and things get underway with Sabu getting the jump on Animal and hitting a gut wrench suplex and a huracanranain quick succession on the big man. Sabu goes for a spinning leg lariat but Animal catches him in mid air and applies a bear hug in an attempt to slow the quicker man down. Sabu struggles to reach his corner to tag out but is dragged back into the Road Warriors' corner where Hawk is tagged in. The Warriors levle Sabu with a double clothesline before Hawk tags Animal back in and sets him up for a DOOMSDAY DEVICE! There's a lateral press but it's broken up by Van Dam while Alfonso's whistle shrieks from their corner. The match will continue much to the frustration of Hawk and Animal. After making a rude gesture toward Van Dam and Alfonso... Sabu is set up for another DOOMSDAY DEVICE and driven into the mat. Van Dam comes into the ring to make the save again and all four wrestlers end up in a wild free-for-all brawl that nearly sees both teams disqualified. The Road Warriors get the better end of things, however, and Sabu takes a brutal POWER SLAM from Animal as a consequence! The Road Warriors are confident that the match is over, but are shocked when the Madman from Bombay, Michigan manages to kick out at two. Hawk is tagged back in and hits an over the shoulder backbreaker on the battered and bruised Sabu before joining Animal in hitting him with another double clothesline. Sabu goes down again and is covered... but manages to kick out yet again! Van Dam can only watch helplessly as his partner is lifted up and set up for a third DOOMSDAY DEVICE! It looks like a foregone conclusion that the match is over, but Alfonso gets involved, distracting Senior Official Bud Gordon and keeping his team alive for now. The Road Warriors are clearly getting angrier and angrier and Hawk puts Sabu through a gut wrench suplex of his own before he gets whipped into the ropes. Hawk looks to take his head off with a flying tackle, but Sabu catches him with a stun gun on the top rope from out of nowhere! Hawk is in a bad position as Van Dam finally tags into the match, going for a FIVE STAR FROG SPLASH right away! He goes for the pin as Animal hits the ring to break things up, but he's cut off by a still-recovering Sabu. Hawk manages to kick out of the lateral press anyway, but just barely. Van Dam and Sabu hit the Rolling Thunder on Hawk before Van Dam uses a rolling fireman's carry on the still-wounded Hawk but it doesn't seem to have anywhere near the effect that he's intended. A punch to the head by Van Dam sees Hawk step back into his own corner where he tags in Animal before the Warriors drive RVD into the mat with a spike piledriver! Van Dam is down and in a bad, bad way for a moment before he's scooped up and put into position for the fourth DOOMSDAY DEVICE of the night! Senior Official Bud Gordon is in position and makes the three count, but he very well could have counted to ten (snake eyes pin). The match is over and just like that, the Road Warriors regain the Tag team Championships. Hawk, Animal and "Precious" Paul Ellering celebrate their big win and the beginning of their record-setting third championship run as Alfonso tends to his fallen men. Winners of the match and NEW N.E.W. Tag Team Champions: The Road Warriors!
Cantrell: "Remember what I said earlier about the tag team match being a hard one to follow?"
Saddler: "Yes, I do."
Cantrell: "Well, they did more than follow it, Frankie. I might go so far as to call this match a Match-of-the-Year candidate!"
Saddler: "It really was something else, wasn't it? It came close to ending so many times! Unreal, Mike. Unreal."
Cantrell: "Well... we are witnessing history here tonight, Frankie. The Road Warriors are Three-Time Tag Team Champions, now!"
Saddler: "Amazing when you think that no other team has even held the belts twice, yet, Mike!"
Cantrell: "Good point."
The show ends with the new champions and their manager still celebrating in the middle of the ring, belts held high.
*the End*

*the End*
