Nikolai Volkoff w/Nikita Breznikov v. The Destroyer
Volkoff turns up the heat early on with his rendition of the Soviet Anthem and we are underway at the historic Fieldhouse. Destroyer builds on the USA chants and gets control of the action. The bout goes to the floor after a pair of figure four leglocks (ch) by Destroyer and that is where the action ends via disqualification when Destroyer runs Volkoff into the ring side rails (Snake Eyes) dud
Dick Hutton v. Harley Race
In a battle of two of the top contenders for the WWL title, Race took the early advantage including a wicked slingshot in the corner. The action spilled to the floor where Hutton ran Race into the ring post. Race was busted wide open and the referee made the disqualification call (snake eyes). Back to back quick disqualification finishes and the fans are not pleased. dud
Antonio Rocca is introduced to the fans and he comes to the ring with an envelope in hand. Rocca thanks the fans for their reception and tells everyone that he has been granted as part of his agreement in coming to WWL the next shot at the WWL Title holding up his envelope. The fans give Rocca a solid reaction but the cheers soon turn to jeers when Nikita Breznikov comes to the ring with Iron Sheik proclaiming that he is the number one contender. Rocca says we can settle this right now and calls out a referee.
Iron Sheik w/Nikita Breznikov v. Antonio Rocca
Rocca tears into the Sheik from the opening bell and then moves to a bow and arrow followed by an ARGENTINIAN BACKBREAKER. Only the distraction of Breznikov keeps the action going and the fans are all over the Russian manager. Back in the ring, Rocca connects with a flying head scissors and flying dropkicks that has the fans roaring. Victory roll and Rocca has the dominating debut win. *
Dog Collar Match – Killer Kowalski w/Captain Lou Albano v. The Sandman
The fans were still buzzing after the last contest and things were about to get much more serious. Unlike there last contest, this one was over rather quickly. Sandman gets some stomps in early on but Kowalski is able to get the upper hand and applies a CLAW HOLD. Sandman is nearly finished at this point and Kowalski steps up the attack including choking him out with the chain on the floor. Back in the ring, Kowalski applies the CLAW HOLD again and get the three count. *
King Kong Bundy v. Frank Gotch
For the second straight week Gotch struggles with Bundy’s incredible size advantage and he takes a beating early on. Gotch manages to kick out after full nelson suplex bounces him off the mat. Gotch finally gets his chance on offense and negates Bundy’s size by taking the action to the mat. Gotch manages to get a crossface and arm bar that has Bundy nearly tapping. Gotch transitions flawless from hold to hold and Bundy is clearly outclassed. When the action gets back to a vertical base, Gotch is quick to get bout back to the ground including a fireman’s carry at one point that stuns the fans as well as his opponent. Gotch keeps on Bundy until he is able to apply the GOTCH TOE HOLD to get the submission. **
The Valiant Brothers w/Captain Lou Albano v. Flying Redheads (Billy Red Lyons & Red Bastien)
The fans are always happy to see Red Bastien in action and now that his Flying Redheads partner Billy Red Lyons has joined him in the WWL, things are about to get a lot quicker in the tag team division. Great back and forth action in this one with both teams making key defensive tags throughout the contest. The Redheads gets the early advantage but cannot get either Valiant to mat for a pin attempt. Bastien gets himself into some trouble and Jimmy Valiant tries for the win with a SUPER ELBOW but Bastien kicks out of the cover. The Valiant Brothers pick up a couple of other near falls on Bastien before Lyons is able to hot tag into the match against Johnny Valiant. Lyons traps Valiant in a SLEEPER and appears to have the match won but Albano is able to cause a distraction to keep his team alive. Lyons than traps Valiant in a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK in the middle of the ring. Jimmy Valiant drops an elbow onto Lyons breaking up the hold and earning a disqualification in the process. Albano quickly gathers his team and heads to the back to a chorus of boos as the Flying Redheads are announced the winners. ** ½
Buddy Rogers v. Giant Baba
A lot of the fans had paid their hard earned money tonight for the opportunity to hate Rogers and the Nature Boy cranks up the heat before the match glaring into ringside. Rogers is able to avoid a shoulder tackle and sends Baba into the corner charging in for a tackle of his own. But Baba moves and Rogers tackles the buckle leading to a quick near fall. Rogers is reeling and Baba takes full advantage with a NECKBREAKER DROP and is your winner. Huge win for the Japanese superstar over the former WWL Champion. *
Tag Team Title Match – Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal)(ch) w/Paul Ellering v. Greg Valentine & Johnny Valentine
This one started off with the Warriors tossing around both Valentines like rag dolls early on with power moves. Johnny Valentine turned the momentum outside the ring running Hawk into the steel ring post busting him open. The referee lets the action continue and Greg Valentine is in but cannot get the win with a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK despite Hawk’s blood loss. The Valentine make frequent tags getting plenty of heat against Hawk. Johnny Valentine takes the action back the floor several times until the referee had seen enough when Valentine ran Hawk into the ring rails face first. The official disqualified Johnny Valentine. Animal and Ellering were quick to come to Hawk’s aid before he could be injured post match. **
