Rumors are swirling around social media as wrestling journalists like Dave Meltzer, Wade Keller and others are looking for confirmation. But after months of heresy, it looks like the rumors are about to come true: Jerry Jarrett, considered by many as one of wrestling’s greatest minds is breaking away from established NWA promoter Nick Gulas to open his own territory on the “Memphis end”. All the details aren’t known at this time, but rumors are that Jarrett has simply tired of Gulas’ act. While the Gulas/Welch territory spread across much of the southeast region of the United States (Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and more), the territory became so successful, it basically “split” into two territories: The “Eastern End”, which covered cities such as Nashville, Chattanooga Huntsville and Birmingham) and the “Western End”, which covered cities such as Memphis, Louisville, Lexington and Evansville.
Jarrett, a young wrestler in the promotion, caught the guy of Roy Welch with his keen mind for the business. Welch immediately took Jarrett under his wing after Jarrett impressed the owner with ideas to help the territory become more profitable and entertaining. Welch gave Jarrett booking control on the Western end of the territory.
While Nick was presenting cards featuring his un athletic son, George, in main events, he began seeing a noticeable drop in attendance and revenue across his main cities. Meanwhile, on the other side of the state, Jarrett had the territory on fire, with the help of a brash, loud mouth wrestler named Jerry Lawler.
Gulas, ignoring the deficiencies in his decision making and booking by keeping George at the top of his cards, ordered Jarrett to book George more on the Western side of the territory, which Jarrett flat out refused, knowing George was box office disaster.
Tensions have been building for months and the rumors look to be true, according to many sources on social media. The big question seems to be : will Jarrett continue to be a NWA sponsored promotion or will he become an “outlaw” promotion? While Gulas is a NWA promoter, he isn’t looked upon fondly by other NWA promoters while Jarrett seems to have the backing of his mentor, Welch, and several other NWA heavyweights such as Eddie Graham and Jim Barnett.
Details are sketchy at the moment, but look for news to break any day. For more information, follow us on twitter at @memphishistory.

BREAKING NEWS!!!! The rumors about Jerry Jarrett leaving the Gulas established promotion look to be true as Jarrett has scheduled a video conference to be streamed online by many social media outlets later today. While Jarrett is considered one of the sport’s brightest minds, it remains to be seen if he can compete with an already established NWA powerhouse in Nick Gulas. While we must stress these are rumors, it’s been speculated that the three top stars in the promotion, Jerry Lawler, Jackie Fargo and Tojo Yamamoto, have agreed to side with Jarrett in the promotion war. While we have to say this is simply speculation, if Jarrett can pull off this coupe, it’s a huge feather in his cap.

LIVE STREAMING BEGINS NOW. Lance Russell appears on screen as the stream starts.
Lance Russell: Hello wrestling fans and thanks for tuning in to what should be a historic announcement. We’ve heard rumors over the past several months this may happen, but I’ll let the gentleman himself explain the situation. So let me welcome in Jerry Jarrett. Jerry, howya doing?
Jerry Jarrett: Thank you Lance, it’s an honor and privilege to be with you and all of our fans watching this today. I know the rumors have been going on for months and it’s something I haven’t been able to comment on, due to various reasons, legal and otherwise, but it’s something that I think our fans will enjoy. To get to the point, I’m breaking off from the established Gulas NWA promotion and establishing my own promotion – Jarrett Enterprises. We’ll continue to run our main cities as usual, so the fans of wrestling in those cities will continue to see the top stars of the territory. Nothing will change there as fans will continue to see the best action there is. And while many have speculated there is hard feelings with myself and Nick, I don’t feel this way at all. I feel promoters have the right to promote where they choose and competition is good for everyone. If Nick wants to continue to run Memphis, Louisville or anywhere else, that’s his choice. But I feel our fans are used to great action, what we’ve given them over the past several years, and I think that’s what will win out.
Lance Russell: There’s been a few questions raised from various sources. Mainly will you stay on as a NWA promoter after breaking away from Nick.
Jerry Jarrett: The answer to that is yes. Roy Welch, my mentor, has given me his complete support along with several other NWA promoters I respect like Eddie Graham and Jim Barnett. With them giving me their blessing, I can say it’s a real honor.
Lance Russell: Another question that has come up is what talent is coming over with you. It’s been speculated that Lawler, Tojo and Jackie Fargo, three of the most established stars in the territory, have sided with you. Jerry Jarrett: That’s only partially true Lance. Unfortunately, Lawler is on board, but at the last minute, after getting their verbal agreement, Jackie and Tojo have decided to stay with Nick. While I have no issue with their decision, because we all have business decisions to make, I admit on a personal level, it hurts because those two are two men I consider my closest friends in the business. But life must go on and we have a promotion to continue to run. I’ll say one thing to the fans at this time. 32 wrestlers have given me verbal agreements so we are looking to book tournaments to crown Southern Heavyweight and Southern Tag Team Champions
All of a sudden, Jerry Lawler, along with manager Mickey Poole, showed up to interrupt the conference.
Jerry Lawler: Jarrett, I know you are a smart man, which is why you signed me, but I heard something about a tournament to crown a Southern Champion. I think you meant it’s going to be a tournament with the winner having the pleasure to face me.
Jerry Jarrett: I’m sorry, that’s not true at all. These tournaments will give the promotion a whole new, fresh feel. You are entered and actually the number one seed, so…
Jerry Lawler: It’s an insult to me Jarrett! You know, I should walk out now, but I’m not going to. In fact, I’ll win this tournament, beat the living hell out of anyone in front of me and hold that Southern Title for as long as I choose and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it.
Lawler then stormed away.
Jerry Jarrett: And that’s fine. I want everyone to be hungry to win the belt because our fans will expect nothing less. I’ll be releasing the tournament matches soon. I could go on and on, but I think the fans would rather see our wrestlers in action than hearing me speak. So Lance, the fans, everyone, thank you for allowing me this time. I only ask our established fan base to stick with us because nothing is changing. Fans will get the action they expect and deserve. Thanks everyone.

Saturday, March 18 – Memphis, TN – TV Lance Russell opened up the show by showing highlights of Dusty Rhodes winning the Southern Title Tournament. After the highlights, Russell brought out Dusty for an interview.
Rhodes claimed it felt great to come in and defeat thirty two other great wrestlers to win the Southern Title. He added that he wanted to give Bill Dundee some huge props for two tough battles and he looks forward to giving him a rematch. Rhodes continued that he originally wanted to come up here to shut up that loud mouth Lawler, but it looks like the Dream did one better by winning the Southern Title, a title Lawler arrogantly claims is rightfully his. Rhodes added he has a tough non-title match now against Ken Dillinger 1) IN a non-title match, Southern Champion Dusty Rhodes beat Ken Dillinger with the FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK. Jerry Lawler came out during the match to hurl some insults at Rhodes. As soon as the match was over, Rhodes came over to Rhodes which saw Lawler berating Rhodes, as Rhodes simply smiled. Lawler yelled at Rhodes to say if he wants to shut his mouth, put that title on the line and he can shut it. This brought out Jerry Jarrett. Jarrett reminded Lawler he basically bombed in the tournament with a record of 1-2, but if he wants a title shot, he can do what other wrestlers do: work his way up the ranks. This was incensed at this ruling by Jarrett as Rhodes made a few mocking gestures at Lawler before going to walk away. But Rhodes didn’t get far as Porkchop Cash and Plowboy Frazier attacked Rhodes. The two held Rhodes as Lawler pounded him with closed fists until Bill Dundee and Tommy Rich made the save. New Southern Tag Champions Bob Armstrong and Rocky Johnson came out for an interview with Lance. Armstrong explained while they feel honored to be wearing the Southern Tag Titles, they really don’t like the circumstances on how it happened. They explained they felt the fans got ripped since the Fullers and von Steigers fought to a double disqualification in the finals of the Losers Bracket This brought out the von Steigers who said they were actually the farthest along in the tournament and faced them in the finals of the winner’s bracket, so go ahead and give them the shot because they deserve it. This brought out the Fullers who told them to hold on. The Fullers said they had every right to a title shot as well. Jerry Jarrett came out to clear up the matter. Jarrett said the two teams will meet this week, with the winners getting that tag shot. The Fullers readily agreed while the von Steigers initially put up some hesitation, but eventually agree. Before leaving, Robert Fuller said why don’t we give the fans a preview of the butt kicking you two goofs will get this week and challenged either to a match, which Karl von Steiger agreed. 2) Robert Fuller pinned Karl von Steiger following a towering body slam Kurt von Steiger ran in and blasted Robert Fuller in the back of the head with his German marching boot. The two put the boots to Robert until Ron Fuller ran in to make the save. Jerry Lawler, Porkchop Cash and Plowboy Frazier came out to the interview area. Lawler was irate that Dundee and Rich dared to stick their nose in their business. Cash immediately told Lawler he and Frazier wanted to give Rich and Dundee some payback today on TV. Lawler laughed and said he doubts they’ll answer the challenge. This brought out Rich and Dundee who gladly accepted the challenge of Frazier and Cash. They said they also have a surprise for Lawler. Rhodes came back out to tell Lawler if you got involved in the match, he would stick his fist down his throat. Lawler came back out with Dr Frank and Igor. Lawler stated there’s a lot of confusion in the tag ranks and he’s secured a non-title match with Johnson and Armstrong. So while the Fullers and von Steigers are fighting it out to see who earns a shot, my dangerous monsters will be taking out those two goofs Armstrong and Johnson. 3) In a non-title match, Bob Armstrong & Rocky Johnson beat Dr Frank & Igor when Johnson pinned Igor after a vertical suplex. Out of nowhere, the Bicentennial Kings ran in and attacked the champs. As Frank and Igor held off Armstrong, the Kings hung Johnson’s neck in the ropes, choking him until the Fullers and Gibsons made the save. The Gibsons came out for an interview. Ricky Gibson said today showed that Memphis is the mecca of tag team wrestling and they’re glad to be in the mix. David Schultz came out and laughed at the Gibsons, calling them no talent hacks. Schultz said his partner Dutch is home in Texas for a family emergency, so he can’t take them both out, but he’ll be glad to take on either one of them today in a singles match if they have the guts. Robert Gibson said he’s looking for the opportunity to prove himself and will gladly take on Schultz. 4) Robert Gibson beat David Schultz by DQ Mantell ran out and attacked Ricky Gibson from behind and ran into the ring. Schultz and Mantell began attacking Robert, whipping him with Mantell’s bullwhip. Ricky Gibson recovered and grabbed a chair to drive them off. Ricky Gibson was irate, saying Robert is a good kid and even his dad didn’t whip him like that. He doesn’t care if it’s Louisville, Memphis, Evansville, wherever…they want Mantell and Schultz tonight After the break, Rock Hunter and the Bicentennial Kings came out. They said Lawler was right. They were the rightful champs and were stripped of their titles for no reason. Hunter claimed he already has his lawyers on the line to file some sort of lawsuit against Jarrett. Armstrong and Johnson ran out to drive off Hunter and the Kings Rocky was irate they nearly killed him and challenged them this week and wants it a no DQ because he doesn’t want to be responsible to what happens to them. 5) Bill Dundee & Tommy Rich beat Plowboy Frazier & Porkchop Cash by DQ Lawler ran in and attacked Dundee, but Rhodes quickly followed resulting in a huge brawl to end the show.
