After a few more months of work, I'm proud to say I'm ready to release my next tribute to 1980's Jim Crockett Promotions: 1988. While not the final related release of mine, this is the final year of actual Crockett ownership, as a series of poor booking and business decisions would lead to Crockett filing for bankruptcy and selling to Ted Turner in November of that year. 1989 will see a sea change on a number of levels, but there's no reason for JCP's business woes to affect YOU, the player.
Included are:
- 18 new wrestler cards and 1 manager card. Leading the way are a card for the new look and style of new Horseman BARRY WINDHAM, and the masked alter ego of Dusty Rhodes, THE MIDNIGHT RIDER. Other notables include BAM BAM BIGELOW, Paul Jones' RUSSIAN ASSASSINS, obscurities like THE BIG GREEN MACHINE, and the first cards for future '90s stars SHANE DOUGLAS and DUSTIN RHODES. Also included is a card for a manager who would take the promotion by storm at year's end, PAUL E. DANGEROUSLY!
- Rules for Kevin Sullivan's TOWER OF DOOM, a multi-man free-for-all consisting of a race to the bottom of 3 steel cages.
- A booklet with bios and status reports for a very turbulent year in wrestling history. Dusty and company were getting desperate and turning people left and right and dealing with numerous departures of key talent, and I've managed to diagnose and keep track of it all.
- The JCP Legends debut of existing LOW stars THE ORIGINAL MIDNIGHT EXPRESS and THE FANTASTICS.
- A bonus! Some commissioned artwork from WERNER MUECK! There were some obscurities and different looks so hard to find photos of that I decided to spend money rather than give you, the player, blank cards. Enjoy new drawings for a mohawked Dustin Rhodes as well as Ray and Boone, THE COMMANDOS!
So enjoy! It's not the greatest year for business or for talent, but it featured several memorable moments (some for the right reasons, some for the wrong) and things will pick up with one more set to go in 1989.
