Thanks for the comments Crimson, Bookerbill and Vegas. Curt Hennig has been a disappoint for me as his record hovers around .500 and he rarely wins his big matches as was the case here with Dutch Savage. I was really hoping to see Curt in the tourney as well but credit Savage for beating him. I was psyched when Doc & Gordy won the belts as it was their first time capturing them. The Road Warriors had an incredible run this time around and now it will be interesting to see what happens with the MVC as the champs. Next up is another edition of LOW All-Star Wrestling, with a new presentation format for the show, I hope you enjoy it...
LOW All-Star Wrestling (Episode 66) - WMC-TV5 Studios - Memphis, TN (Card #1071)
• Bullet Points:
Announcers Lance Russell & Dave Brown ran down the action coming up on the broadcast including Nick Bockwinkel vs. Ivan Koloff in a PWI Invitational Cup Tournament Qualifying Match plus Blackjack Mulligan defending the LOW Tex-Arkana Television title against ASW star “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe. They were joined at the broadcast table by Mulligan who discussed his recent title defense against “The Machine” Brian Cage in the IWA and said that he had Sharpe set in his sights for an Iron Claw…PWI Editor Bill Apter also joined Russell and Brown at the announce table to discuss the CWA card at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, TN (Card #1070) headlined by Steve Williams & Terry Gordy winning the LOW World tag team titles from the Road Warriors. They acknowledged that it was the first world tag title win for Williams and Gordy and it was over the record eight-time LOW World tag team champions. Apter said to check the PWI web site for some great action photos from that match along with an exclusive post-match interview with the new champions. He also discussed the ongoing qualifying round of the PWI Cup Tournament and said that his MVP thus far was a man that had been eliminated and that is Sabu. He credited Sabu with taking three-time LOW World Heavyweight champion George Hackenschmidt to the limit and added that no matter what you think of Sabu or his manager, Abdullah Farouk, that he is a force to be reckoned with.
• Talking Points:
LOW Junior Heavyweight champion “The Cleaner” Kenny Omega appeared via satellite from a hotel room in England, where he is scheduled to defend the title, accompanied by Bullet Club members the Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson). Omega bragged about his title win over Jerry Lynn (Card #1064 in Yokohama, Japan) and said that the title belt proved who the real leader of the BC is, throwing shade at both AJ Styles and Adam Cole. The Bucks, playing a game of Chutes & Ladders in the background, chimed in that The Elite are “too sweet” and that the Bullet Club has entered a new age with new leadership. Omega agreed and said that the best is yet to come for The Elite members of the BC. Back in the studio Dave Brown wondered how Styles and Cole would take that and said that there could be a Bullet Club explosion in Kings Road United…Lance Russell interviewed two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion Frank Gotch in studio. Gotch said that he is ready for the challenge of his life when he takes on Andre the Giant for the LOW World Heavyweight title in St. Louis, MO (Card #1073) in his home of Golden Age Wrestling. Russell had video aired of Andre’s world title win over Johnny Valentine in a Steel Cage Match at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY (Card #1065) and said that Gotch will have his hands full for sure. Gotch said Valentine is a friend of his and a former rival and that he is double tough so Andre really showed something by taking the title from him. Gotch said that Valentine may be out of LOW for now but he plans to avenge him by winning the title and ending Andre’s undefeated streak.
1) PWI Invitational Cup Tournament - Qualifying Match: Nick Bockwinkel defeated Ivan Koloff:
PWI Editor Bill Apter joined Lance Russell and Dave Brown at the announce table for this qualifying match between Nick Bockwinkel and the “Russian Bear” Ivan Koloff who was accompanied by his manager Captain Lou Albano. The three brought up the recent infighting between Koloff and Albano mainly due to the ongoing feud between Albano and rival manager Abdullah Farouk in the CWA. The two seemed to be on the same page here as Koloff fought Bockwinkel toe-to-toe in what was a great bout. Both men wound up being busted open and Albano interfered several times including once striking Bockwinkel leading to a big near fall for Koloff. It went down to the wire and due to television time limits ended up in a draw meaning that both men would be eliminated from the tournament. Morgan Dollar, the senior referee of LOW, was on hand and after conferring with Apter he ordered the match to be restarted to determine a winner. Albano protested as an alert Bockwinkel got control quickly and locked on the Bockwinkel Sleeper. With Albano still arguing with Apter and Dollar it was Koloff going under and losing the match by submission. Bockwinkel advanced to the tournament taking place during WrestleCade 11 weekend while Koloff bailed to the outside getting into an argument with his manager.
2) Rick Rude defeated S.D. Jones:
The popular S.D. “Special Delivery” Jones out of Philadelphia, PA, took on arrogant CWA star “Ravishing” Rick Rude. Manager J.J. Dillon was at ringside for Rude and went over to the announce table saying that he sees greatness in Rude and that in St. Louis, MO (Card #1073) he will be facing “The Solid Man” William Muldoon in the qualifying round of the PWI Cup tournament. He added that Rude plans to vanquish Muldoon and move on to more “serious business”. As for the match, there was a nice rally by Jones at the midway point, including delivering the Philly shuffle and KO Punch, before Rude took over. He laid out Jones with the Rude Awakening but pulled him up at the count of two before delivering the devastating finisher a second time to score the pin.
3) Don Leo Jonathan defeated Savage-T:
The “Mormon Giant” Don Leo Jonathan of Golden Age Wrestling took on Savage-T who was accompanied by his valet KJ Hill. An early assault by Savage-T had the larger Jonathan on the defensive. Johnathan, however, reversed the momentum and came off the top rope with a Flying Bodypress but Hill distracted the referee on the pin attempt. She may have regretted that as Jonathan went into overdrive punishing Savage -T and not long after hit the Mormon Swing for the pin. Jonathan stopped by the announce table afterward and said that he is bringing in a great mystery partner to face his rivals John Pesek and The Terrible Turk on the next GAW card.
4) Eddie & Doug Gilbert defeated Koko B. Ware & Jim Powers:
The popular ASW pairing of the “Birdman” Koko B. Ware & Jim Powers went up against the PCW brother tag team combination of “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert & Doug Gilbert who were accompanied by their manager Jimmy Hart. The “Mouth of the South” tried to give his longtime adversary Lance Russell a hard time but quickly ran back to ringside as Ware and Powers had his men in serious trouble. Doug turned things around when he planted Powers with a DDT for a big near fall. The Gilberts had a strong offensive from there and this bout ended when Eddie caught Powers with the Hot Shot to score the pin.
5) Lash Leroux defeated Damien Martinez by DQ:
The “Rajin Cajun” Lash Leroux had his hands full taking on “The Punishment” Damien Martinez who was accompanied by Army of Darkness leader Kevin Sullivan. The early action saw Leroux hit both Bourbon Street Blues and the Whiplash on the larger Martinez for big near falls. Sullivan interfered turning the tide and Martinez took over delivering brutal moves like the curb stomp and Alabama Slam backbreaker. He then took it to the outside where under orders from Sullivan he ignored the calls of the referee and assaulted Leroux. Martinez used chairs, a cable wire and even a trash can leading to Leroux winning it by disqualification. Sullivan went over to the announce table laughing maniacally and said that was only a small sample of what “The Punishment” will bring forth in the CWA.
6) LOW Tex-Arkana Television title: Blackjack Mulligan© defeated Larry Sharpe to retain the title:
The powerful Blackjack Mulligan put the LOW Tex-Arkana Television title on the line against “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe, a native of Paulsboro, NJ, and former head of Sharpe Sports Agency, Inc. in PCW. Sharpe, now a full-time member of the ASW roster, made a good accounting of himself but it would not be enough. Mulligan took full control late and locked on the Claw Hold winning it via submission. Mulligan was successful in his version six defense of the title bringing episode 66 of LOW All-Star Wrestling to a close.
