Match Highlights:
Night Two of King of Trios produced some incredible results, including an unlikely substitution that could directly affect the outcome of the tournament. That came because of an intense bout between United Friends (Mike Quackenbush, Eddie Edwards & Trent Barreta) and Team Fireball (The Sheik, Kevin Sullivan & Eddie Gilbert). The Sheik, the reigning LOW International Heavyweight champion, found himself on the defensive for a good stretch as the United Friends made quick tags in and out. Quackenbush nearly won it with the Chikara Special on The Sheik but Sullivan made the save. Team Fireball eventually took over using attacks both in and out of the ring. Gilbert looked confident in the home stretch before a surprise counter by Quackenbush led to him hitting the Quackendriver II for the pin. That finish rocked the building but the celebration was short lived as Edwards and Barreta were jumped and tossed out of the ring. The Sheik and Sullivan then locked up Quackenbush allowing Gilbert to burn the CHIKARA founder with a fireball. Edwards and Barreta recovered and cleared the ring but it was too late. Quackenbush was burned and later ruled by doctors as being unable to compete on Night Three leaving United Friends down one man.
The next match, the main event of the night, saw the cult favorite team of 68’ Comeback Special (Larry Sweeney, Lucas Calhoun & Pelvis Pressly) going up against The Elite (Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson) faction of the Bullet Club. Omega survived a roll-up scare from Pressly during the heat of battle and then nailed him with the One Winged Angel only to have Sweeney and Calhoun break up the pin. Pressly was out of it, though, and Matt Jackson soared off the top rope with a Flying Bodypress on him moments later to score the pin. The Elite were basking in their victory when suddenly Bullet Club leader AJ Styles ran in with a chair driving them out of the ring. Styles grabbed the mic and pointed to the staging area where Eddie Edwards and Trent Barreta were standing alongside IWA Commissioner David Marquez. He then informed The Elite that thanks to a vacancy on United Friends he was taking the place of Mike Quackenbush on the team. The crowd erupted in cheers as Omega and the Young Bucks blew a gasket at ringside. Styles concluded by telling The Elite that he would see them on Night Three in Philadelphia.
The KOT match of the night went to Team Technique (Johnny Saint, Bryan Danielson & Zack Sabre Jr.) and the Savage Dragons (Randy Savage, Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly). It was an incredible bout that pushed the members of both sides to the limit. Savage withstood a strong assault from the opposition and came back hitting the spectacular flying axe handle to the floor on Saint. His reDRagon partners did their best to rough up Team Technique but unfortunately victory eluded them. The finish saw Danielson blast Savage with roundhouse kicks before tagging Sabre Jr. who hit the “Macho Man” with the Penalty Kick to score the pin. Both teams shook hands after the match but Savage looked none too happy over the result…The Monarchy (Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli & Princess Kimberlee) advanced to Night Three with a controversial win over The Colony (Fire Ant, Soldier Ant & Green Ant). It was a short battle that ended with Hero pinning Fire Ant with his controversial Loaded Rolling Elbow Smash. Once again, The Colony were denied a trip to final night of King of Trios.
The grudge match between Diamond Dallas Page and Kevin Steen took on added importance when it was changed to a top contender’s match. That meant that the winner would face Jay Lethal for the IWA Heavyweight title on Night Three. DDP, a former IWA Heavyweight champion, twice hit the Diamond Cutter on Steen in the early going resulting in big near falls. Steen battled back shaking up DDP with the power bomb on the ring apron and used the Sharpshooter for a submission chance. DDP rallied back and delivered a third Diamond Cutter but Steen managed to break the pin by getting his foot over the bottom rope. Steen had to dig down deep after that and he struck with the Package Piledriver to get the win. Lethal and his manager SoCal Val appeared in the staging area post-match holding up the title belt in taunting fashion. Steen dared Lethal to come down to the ring but the champion waved him off saving the physicality for night three. Well, not so fast as when Steen turned around DDP dropped him with another Diamond Cutter drawing a big pop from the crowd.
One of the highlights of King of Trios weekend is Rey De Voladores pitting eight of the best high flyers against each other in four-way competition. Kings Road United star Tiger Mask, a two-time winner of the event, is going to attempt to make it three. Tiger Mask survived a tough bout with reigning IWA J-Crown champion Will Ospreay, Marshe Rockett and Austin Aries to qualify for the finals. The talented Aries put on an exceptional performance in the match but unfortunately, he missed out on winning it. The other spot in the finals went to free agent star Matt Sydal as he overcome former RDV winner ACH, Chuck Taylor and Rich Swann in a great bout. The popular Swann had the full backing of the crowd but he was unable to put away Sydal in the end. Night Three will now see Tiger Mask take on Matt Sydal in the RDV finals in what promises to be a fantastic battle of the high flyers.
Injury Report:
* “Lightning” Mike Quackenbush was burned with a Fireball by Eddie Gilbert after the United Friends won their KOT bout over Team Fireball. Doctors did not clear Quackenbush to compete on Night Three prompting IWA Commissioner David Marquez to allow the United Friends to choose a substitute which, as it turned out, is going to be Bullet Club leader AJ Styles.
