World Tag Team Tournament – Qualifying Round Matches
Match 1: Rick Rude & Masked Superstar (8) w/Bobby Heenan v. Cowboy Bob Orton & Don Muraco (9) The fans dislike both teams so the reaction during the introductions by Gary Michael Cappetta is split evenly. Rude & Superstar work well together and manage to cut off Muraco early on. A top rope sledgehammer sends Muraco to the floor where he drags Rude outside and rams whips him into the ring post. The referee calls for the disqualification at 6:46. A disappointing results starts the tournament off. Dud
Match 2: Road Warriors (5) w/Paul Ellering v. The Sandman & Justin Credible (12) With an angry Hawk and Animal facing the Hardcore Icons, the fans knew this one was not going to be pretty. Credible has success wrestling Hawk in the opening moments but when Sandman goes for a body slam the match turns and Hawk crushes Sandman with a vertical suplex before Animal joins his partner for a double clothesline which quickly ends things at 3:27. After the match, Sandman is all over his partner for not making the save. Credible goes to leave the ring and then suddenly turns and cracks Sandman with his Singapore Cane and then proceeds to flog Sandman in the middle the ring until security arrives. dud
Match 3: Midnight Express (6) w/Jim Cornette v. Mad Dog & Butcher Vachon (11) This was the longest bout of the qualifying round with the Express dictating the pace for the most part. The Vachons did have some moments early on in the contest including a PILEDRIVER by Mad Dog on Bobby Eaton that nearly ended the bout. Butcher Vachon was the real story at the end of the match when he refused to go down. Vachon survived a VEG-O-MATIC and a pair of SUPERKICKS before a ROCKET LAUNCHER sent the Express into the main tournament at 22:07. The fans give Butcher Vachon a huge ovation for his efforts in the loss. ***
Match 4: Greg & Johnny Valentine (7) v. Flying Red Heads (10) The fans anticipated a classic between these two teams are things started that way as the action went back and forth early on. Red Bastien got himself into trouble especially against Johnny Valentine but kicks out after a pair of ATOMIC SKULLCRUSHERS and tags in Billy Red Lyons. Johnny Valentine manages to escape Lyons’ SLEEPER and the action continues both in and out of the ring. Greg Valentine tangles Bastein in the ropes at one point and smashes away on Bastien drawing solid heat from ringside. World Tag Team Tournament – Round One
Match 5: Antonio Inoki & Giant Baba (1) w/Rikidozan v. Rick Rude & Masked Superstar (8)w/Bobby Heenan Media from Japan are all over ringside making it difficult for The Brain to get instructions to his team. There is a huge spot early on where Rude backdrops Baba over the ropes to the floor and Baba takes out several members of the Japanese press in the process. Baba is able to tag out to Inoki but is essentially out of the match for several minutes while Inoki battles both opponents. Baba recovers and tags back into the match against Superstar downing him with a boot to the face and following with a NECKBREAKER DROP for the three count at 14:25 while Inoki blocks Rude from making the save. **
Match 6: Killer Bees (4) v. Road Warriors (5) w/Paul Ellering The perfect match up of power vs. speed and agility was featured in the next bout in the tournament. Both teams made several defensive tags keeping the momentum going back and forth. Animal missed a dropkick against B. Brian Blair and The Bees took control of the action. A defensive tag put Hawk in against Jim Brunzell and Hawk sent Brunzell crashing to the mat with a gorilla press slam and then hooked the leg for the shocking three count at 7:40. The match just never really gets going. dud
Match 7: Jimmy & Johnny Valiant (3) w/Captain Lou Albano v. The Midnight Express (6) w/Jim Cornette With both Albano and Cornette at ringside the fans were fired up for this one. The Valiant Brothers dominated the action from the opening bell and only the interference of Jim Cornette saved Bobby Eaton after a TOP ROPE ELBOW. Stan Lane later saves Eaton from a SUPER ELBOW starting a wild brawl that gave the Midnight Express one of their few moments of control in the bout. The end came when Jimmy Valiant blasted a bloody Eaton with a foreign object at ringside and Eaton could not recover before the 10 count and was counted out of the ring at 26:43. ** ½
Match 8: Jimmy Snuka & Ilio DiPaolo (2) v. Greg & Johnny Valentine (7) The tandem of Snuka & DiPaolo are over with the fans during the introduction. For the most part Snuka & DiPaolo work together well as a team despite their lack of experience together. They manage to cut off Greg Valentine from his corner but Johnny Valentine is able to save his son after a SUPERFLY LEAP. There is a great spot later in the match where DiPaolo uses a figure four leglock on Johnny Valentine to set up a SUPERFLY LEAP by Snuka but Greg Valentine breaks up the cover. The Valentine’s finally get something going keeping DiPaolo in the ring but time expires at 30:00 minutes before they are able to capitalize. Both teams are eliminated from the tournament and the Valiant Brothers have huge bye through to the finals. *** ½
World Tag Team Tournament – Semi-Finals
Match 9: Giant Baba & Antonio Inoki (1) w/Rikidozan v. Road Warriors (5) with Paul Ellering Animal locks up with Animal to start things off and Inoki immediately takes control with a belly to back suplex that stuns the Warrior enough that Inoki is able to pick up the three count at 2:11. George Hackenschmidt goes after Hutton while Buddy Rogers trades moves with Sabu and then sends Sabu over the ropes for the second elimination of the night. Bobo Brazil bloodies the Iron Sheik at ringside and the fans love it. They take their battle back into the ring and while they tangle, Killer Kowalski takes the opportunity to come up from behind and dump both men from the match. Brazil and Sheik brawl their way back to the locker room. Hutton keeps busy and goes after Jim Londos. Hutton overpowers the Golden Greek and sends him packing. Ted DiBiase spends most of the match trying to purchase some assistance but he has no takers and he is eventually tracked down by Antonino Rocca who quickly eliminates DiBiase with a dropkick. Rogers attacks Hutton from behind and tries to toss him over the ropes but Hutton turns things around and backdrops the Nature Boy from the match for his 3rd elimination of the night. Mil Mascaras is struggling with Hackenschmidt and takes their battle to the floor. When they return to the ring, Hackenschmidt is eliminated from the match by a dropkick. Dan Severn tangles with Antonino Rocca and muscles the high flyer from the match. Harley Race punishes The Destroyer with a diving headbutt off the second rope and tosses the masked man to the floor. We are down to ten as Mil Mascaras connects with a slingshot plancha on Hutton and then dumps him to the floor. Nick Bockwinkel takes up the battle against Mascaras as Race brawls with Diamond Dallas Page. Frank Gotch surprises Race and Page from behind and lifts them both over the ropes. Race hangs on and Page hits the floor. Ed Lewis battles Mil Mascaras in a clash of mat wrestling and high flying. Rikidozan chops away on Killer Kowalski and then tries unsuccessful to suplex him out of the ring. Nick Bockinkel and Dan Severn brawl on the floor and Bockwinkel comes out on top. Moment later, Bockwinkel tosses Severn over the ropes. Race takes advantage of Bockwinkel’s distraction and downs Bockwinkel with a vertical suplex before dumping him to the floor. Mascaras and Kowalski battle in and out of the ring. Race and Lewis go hold for hold until Lewis charges Race in the corner and Race backdrops Lewis from the match. Mascaras and Rikidozan are trading blows and Race attacks both men from behind dumping them both to the floor and we are down to three. Gotch and Kowalski struggle while Race takes a breather and Gotch suplexes Kowalski to the mat and then tosses him to the floor. It is now Gotch from SCW and Race from NECW. Both men are spent and the action is sloppy. Race hits a suplex and then lifts Gotch over the ropes to claim the United States Title at 37:54. ***

News and Views: A huge night for NECW as they leave St. Louis with all the NWC Tiles. The action in the ring was somewhat disappointing especially with the title tournament finals. The exception was the Battle Royal which managed to captivate the live crowd who otherwise spent a majority of the night sitting on their hands. . As previously reported, SCW has secured the first title defence of new NWC World Champion Bruiser Brody has he takes on Don Leo Jonathan in a rematch from tonight on Card 5. On the same card Harley Race will put his Untied States Title on the line against Frank Gotch . . . Dave Meltzer is reporting that the NWC has inked a deal with Bill Apter and Apter will begin hosting interview segments at live NWC events starting with the next card. Meltzer reported that the initial plan is to have Apter appear at the shows that do not feature a defence of the NWC Title. Dave Meltzer further reported that the NWC has secured the services of Gary Michael Cappetta who will be the ring announcer at select NWC events with a priority given to nights where the NWC World Title will be defended.

The match ends with a CAMEL CLUTCH at 17:15. ***
Bill Apter’s Hot Seat debuts and Apter’s first guest is NWC World Champions Bruiser Brody who is greeted with a huge reception from the fans. Match 5: Jimmy Snuka & Ilio DiPaolo v. United States Champion Harley Race & Buddy Rogers The fans give the Superfly and DiPaolo a huge ovation as they make their way to the ring. The action starts off slow as both teams get a feel for their competition. DiPaolo surprises some fans by holding his name against the United States Champion and The Nature Boy even picking up a near fall on Rogers. For his part, Brody does not get involved in the action. Jimmy tries for the save but Hawk executes a noggin knocker and cover Johnny while Ellering takes out Albano at ringside. The Warriors are the new NWC World Tag Team Champions at 18:36. *
News and Views: History is made for the second card in a row as we have new World Tag Team Champions with the Road Warriors win over Jimmy & Johnny Valiant. . . . Several key feuds seem to be developing in the NECW including an undercard battle between the team of Ted DiBiase & Virgil and the unusual pairing of Brutus Beefcake and Koko B. Ware and a hardcore battle between The Sandman and Justin Credible. . . The next NECW card will feature Bruiser Brody defending the NWC World Championship along with a United States Title Match . . . Dave Meltzer is reporting that despite only having presented a handful of cards, both the NECW and SCW are considering adding to their rosters. Several wrestlers signed to contacts have yet to see any in ring action so it hard to believe that the federations would be looking to add more competitors to the mix. SCW have very limited cap space remaining and would have to release some talent if they want to sign anyone other than perhaps one other mid card talent.

News and Views: Another history making night with Don Leo Jonathan going over in the main event to become the new NWC World Champion. The third battle between Jonathan and Bruiser Brody will take place on Card 6. . . SCW fans will need to wait until Card 9 in Greensboro before the World Title is defended in the area again . . . Dave Meltzer is reporting that the NWC will soon be reducing the number of title matches per card. Meltzer has learned that the NWC by-laws have been officially adopted and each champion will be required to defend their title two times every five cards in both the NECW and SCW promotions. This means that each card would likely have at least one title match with the occasional card having an extra title match on the bill. The new scheduling will be rolled out shortly. Meltzer reported that by stacking the first few cards in each promotion with title matches, the NWC felt they would generate a buzz amongst fans and boost attendance figures. The reduction in title matches will allow more talent to booked on each card reducing the number of names under contact but not getting any work in the ring. Meltzer speculated that this announcement would mean the end of the plans of each promotion signing additional talent . . . Up next, the SCW heads to the Civic Centre in Ashville, NC where the new NWC World Tag Team Champions Road Warriors will defend their titles against Giant Baba & Antonio Inoki in the main event. The Japanese team have already defeated the Warriors in the World Tag Team Title Tournament before losing to the Valiant Brothers in the finals. In addition, United States Champion Harley Race returns to SCW to defend his title against Johnny Valentine. Also signed is the third match between the Killer Bees and The Midnight Express and big rematch between the Flying Redheads and the team of Don Muraco and Cowboy Bob Orton. Bobo Brazil will be looking for some payback when he clashes with Greg Valentine and in an offshoot of tonight’s six man tag team battle, Mil Masacaras meets Rikidozan in singles action.
