News and Views: The National Wrestling Council has announced the formation of two new promotions that will change the shape of pro wrestling on the eastern seaboard. North East Championship Wrestling and Southern Champion Wrestling will both promote cards under the NWC banner. The NWC has signed over 60 competitors to offer sheets and there will be a closed door draft session to determine the rosters of the two promotions. Following the draft, each promotion will be free to sign talent as they see fit provided that all contacts are approved by the NWC and that each promotion stays within the set NWC budget (1000 Rahl rating points). Both federations will recognize the same World Champion that will be determined at an upcoming NWC event.
Details about the final rosters and first cards will follow shortly

News and Views: Dave Meltzer has reported that the closed door meetings of representatives from North East Championship Wrestling and Southern Championship Wrestling have started. The meetings were reported to be very heated as representatives from both promotions attempted to scoop up the top talent. Meltzer reported that the Mexican legend Mil Mascaras was the first competitor drafted overall and will compete for SCW. Meltzer went onto report that the NECW’s strategy appeared to be to sign competitors who were proven draws and had a history in the North East. Some of the talent high on their priority list included Jimmy Superfly Snuka, Ed Strangler Lewis, The Golden Greek Jim Londos, Antonino Rocca and Nature Boy Buddy Rogers. For their part, Meltzer reports that the SCW capitalized on a relationship with Japan’s Legends of the Ring promotion to secure several big names from overseas. In fact, Meltzer reported that Giant Baba was seen leaving the meetings having apparently signed with SCW.

News and Views: Dave Meltzer continues to report on the closed door meetings between the NWC and promoters from Southern Championship Wrestling and North Easter Championship Wrestling. The meetings have concluded. Meltzer was able to confirm that both federations left the meeting with a roster of 35 wrestlers. Meltzer tells us that one of the most contentious issues was the process for determining the first NWC Champion. After much debate, it was determined that each federation would host their own tournament to determine a single representative to compete for the NWC World Title. However, the two sides were unable to agree where the title match should take place. It was thought one federation would host the NWC World Title Match and the other would host the World Tag Team Title Match. The NWC ended the sessions without resolution of this issue and Meltzer has learned the NWC is now considering holding the Title bouts at a neutral location including the possibility of holding the matches in Japan as means of cementing the relationship with Legends of the Ring. The complete rosters will be released soon.

Card 01: The NWC presents SCW @ Charlotte, NC – Coliseum:
World Title Match Tournament – Round One
Match 1: Mil Mascaras (1) v. Don Leo Jonathan (8) A classic match up of power vs. speed kicks things off in Southern Championship Wrestling. A handshake starts things off and the action is explosive from the get go with neither man holding back in the opening minutes. There is a huge spot where Mascaras tries to dive onto Jonathan at ringside but the big man catches him and tosses Mascaras back over the top rope into the ring. Mascaras manages to battle back and begins to set the pace of the match nearly ending it with a FLYING BODYPRESS. The finish comes when Jonathan catches Mascaras charging into the corner with an elbow to the chin and then hits the MORMON SWING for the three count at 14:20. **
Match 2: Giant Baba (4) v. George Hackenschmidt (5) Media from Japan jam ringside for this one. It does not look like Hackenschmidt would last long against the Japanese giant as Baba picks up a pair of near falls with Baba Chops. Baba mounts the corner for a deathjump clothesline that stuns the crowd and then connects with a NECKBREAKER DROP but somehow Hackenschmidt kicks out at the last second. Baba climbs the corner again but this time Hackenschmidt is able to knock Baba off the top of the buckles sending the big crashing to the mat in a heap. Hackenschmidt shows his strength with a single leg pickup and slam for a 2 count. The action goes outside Baba is able to regain control. A back suplex ends it moments later and Baba is onto the next round at 13:25. ** ½
Match 3: Bobo Brazil (2) v. Johnny Valentine (7) These two were familiar with each other having battled all across territories in the North East before both being signed by SCW. The action is intense from the opening bell. The fans cheer every move by Brazil and he responds by setting the pace early on. Valentine survives a COCO BUTT and eventually Brazil takes the match to the floor and Valentine is disqualified at 8:54 when he shoves the referee when the official tries to get the action back into the ring. Both men brawl until security arrives to break things up.*
Match 4: Frank Gotch (3) v. Antonino Rocca (6) The crowd is still buzzing from the last match and the excitement carries over into the opening minutes of the fourth match of the night with Rocca frustrating Gotch with his unorthodox attack. Rocca telegraphs a backdrop and that is all the opportunity Gotch needs as he counters with a piledriver and then goes after Rocca’s lower body with a rolling knee bar that forces Rocca to the floor. Gotch gets a series of punches in at ringside drawing heat from the fans and then takes the action back inside ending the bout at 6:16 with a GOTCH TOE HOLD. *
World Title Match Tournament – Round Two
Match 5: Giant Baba (4) v. Don Leo Jonathan (8) Two of the largest competitors in SCW met in the first semi-final match. Media from Japan once again scramble to find a spot a ringside to cover Baba’s match. There is an incredible spot where Jonathan comes off the corner onto Baba at ringside the crowd explodes. Somehow, both men manage to make it back into the ring before the 10 count and Baba is able to lift a shoulder up after Jonathan connects with a MORMON SWING. Jonathan climbs the corner and ends it with deathjump cross body block at 7:46. **
Match 6: Bobo Brazil (2) v. Frank Gotch (3) For the second straight bout, Gotch is in the ring with one of the most popular competitors in the SCW. A handshake starts things off and both men struggle to gain an advantage as the momentum goes back and forth. Gotch draws heat from the fans when he sends Brazil into the ring post. The end comes at ringside when Brazil accidentally strikes the referee with a punch when the official tries to break up a brawl at ringside. Gotch is through to the finals at 14:58. *
Match 7: Killer Bees v. Midnight Express w/Jim Cornette The fans are all over Cornette from moment he appears at ringside. Both teams make quick tags to keep the action going back and forth. B. Brian Blair gets himself in trouble and Stan Lane mounts the corner for a deathjump smash but Blair rolls clear and Lane crashes to the mat. Blair quickly hooks the leg and gets the upset pin at 9:23. *
World Title Tournament Match – Finals
Match 8: Frank Gotch (3) v. Don Leo Jonathan (8) It is size and power against the prototypical mat grappler in the tournament finals. Gotch is able to get his much larger opponent onto the mat early on but once Jonathan regains his feet the momentum changes. Jonathan hits an atomic drop and ends the match with a MORMON SWING at 3:37. *

The fans cheer every blow landed by Crusher and Heenan is all over the referee as Crusher brawls his way to control of the action. The high light of the match comes when Heenan distracts Crusher allowing Bockwinkle to attack Crusher from behind with a double hammer to the back that sends Crusher crashing into Heenan! The action returns to the ring and Bockwinkel uses a deathjump smash to set up a BOCKWINKEL SLEEPER. Crusher powers free but Bockwinkel quickly reapplies the hold for the win at 14:00. Bockwinkel has to help Heenan to the back as the fans shower the pair with garbage **
Match 2: Bruiser Brody (4) v. Killer Kowalski (5) The fans were on their feet early for this battle between two of the best brawlers in the world. There is a great spot where Snuka leaps over the ropes onto Race at ringside. Later, Race cracks Snuka across the back with a chair shot at ringside drawing great heat. The competitors spend more and more time brawling on the floor and that is where it ends when Snuka comes off the top of the corner with a falling cross body block onto Race at ringside. News & Views: The NWC has released the official brackets for the upcoming World Tag Team Title Tournament that will take place on Card 3 in St. Louis and the seeding have raised some eyebrows in the wrestling world. Dave Meltzer is reporting that the original tournament seeding had the Road Warriors and Midnight Express as number one and two but after both teams suffered loses in their first bouts the NWC was forced to reconsider the tournament seeding. Meltzer has reported that Captain Lou Albano was very vocal in the process and petitioned to have the Valiant Brothers seeded over the Road Warriors after their convincing win over the Hawk and Animal. The NWC was decided to strip both the Warriors and Express of their top seeded position and move them into the qualifying round of the tournament. As a result, the top seeded teams are Giant Baba & Antonio Inoki and the team of Jimmy Snuka & Ilio DiPaolo. Bill Apter of PWI contacted Midnight Express manager Jim Cornette for his thoughts on the NWC decision and Cornettte was besides himself and promised to take every necessary step legal or otherwise to restore his team’s seeded position. For their part, the Warriors did not seem to care telling Apter that the NWC’s decision just meant that one more team will get hurt on the way to the Warriors capturing the titles. The seeding of Snuka & DiPaolo at number 2 caused even more controversy as the pair had not even teamed up before. Sources told Dave Meltzer that the spot was actually meant for the team of Bruiser Brody and Snuka but when Brody won the NECW Title Match Tournament, Snuka was given the option of picking a new partner and maintained the high seeded spot. The official brackets are as follows: Baba & Inoki will face the winner of Masked Superstar & Rick Rude v. Don Muraco & Cowboy Bob Orton; Killer Bees will face the winner of Road Warriors v. The Sandman & Justin Credible; Valiant Brothers will face the winner of Midnight Express v. Butcher & Mad Dog Vachon and Jimmy Snuka & Ilio DiPaolo will meet the winners of Johnny & Greg Valentine v. Flying Redheads.
I am picking the Warriors to come away with the belts.
