Lions will not be resigning WR Josh Reynolds as he is signing a deal with Denver. Not a huge loss but he leaves a bit of a hole. GM Holmes will pick up a WR on day 2 or 3 of the draft I am sure, and things will be ok. Donovan People’s-Jones will take his spot, but I agree that a rookie will be added. Hopefully with a full offseason with the team Donovan can get the playbook down and be of value. Did not see a lot last season but I will chalk it up to the midseason trade. I think he can be of assistance. Also, hopefully Williams bursts out this season. If there are no more distractions he needs to show up and show out. I have seen some mocks having us take a WR in the 2nd round. I would not go that high but if Holmes does so be it. In Holmes I trust.

Panthers signed Jadeveon Clowney for 2 years, $20 million. Seems a decent deal and kind of wish we got him, but I guess his injury concerns is why Holmes might not have gone after him.

I have discovered a new fun thing to do. When reading mock drafts if the person says a team could pick position X but there a lack of depth so they mock Y to the team, look to see where they next mock X and what they say about it. I got this idea from Field Yates who in his current 2 round mock on ESPN's site says the Lions in round 2 could pick an edge defender but the draft's overall depth at that position is not great. So Yates mocks a WR to us in the 2nd. Then on the very next pick, the VERY NEXT ONE, he has Baltimore drafting an Edge from Penn State who had 7.5 sacks last year a pressure rate that was 7th in the nation. What the deuce man? You have the Lions pass on a guy they could use because you say there is no real talent there and then have him go to a defensive minded team in the next pick. It is like he is mocking guys to teams how he wants them to be and ignoring needs. Hilarious.

A new name I am seeing pop up in some mocks for us is Iowa CB Cooper DeJean. He might be one to take. Talk is he could excel at safety but could be solid if not really good at CB. He is 6'1" and 203. He was a unanimous All American last year, won the Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year and Rodgers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year awards. That means even if it takes a bit to work him in as a starter at CB he could help the team with returns. In one game in 2022 he had returned an INT for a TD and returned four punts for 82 yards and through three quarters was outgaining the Iowa offense. Granted it does not take a lot to outgain their offense these days but still. An interesting connection to the Lions franchise beyond that he played defense with one of our first round picks last year, Jack Campbell, is he played basketball in high school and his career points ranks him behind T.J. Hockenson who was a former Iowa TE and of course played for the Lions after we drafted him.

San Fran offered TE Brock Wright a deal but since we had offered him one, we were able to match the 49ers deal. It is about twice the money we offered him originally but not too much so a safe signing IMO.

Two weeks from today the draft will be over. We will have a slightly better idea of how good we will be this coming season. I want to see the Lions draft an Edge and CB with first two picks in no particular order, just the two best at their position available and then a WR with their 3rd pick. After that, fill in depth. A guard is probably a need for depth and future starter as well.

Lions resigned RB Reynolds and LB Houston. Good signings. Hopefully Houston can get back to the form he had in first eight games of his career.

An interesting thing has popped up in a couple mocks I have looked at. They think the Lions trade back, giving up their late 1st round pick for an early 2nd round pick plus a pick or two later in the draft. That makes sense, especially if the guy that want in the 1st would still be there early in the 2nd. They get their man plus an extra pick or two. A few people, including Mel Kiper, has said the Lions have few holes right now. In any other draft I can see that happening no problem. Not this year. The draft is IN Detroit. I think the home fans would be disappointed if they come out in force only to see their team not make a pick on day one. I am not sure how much of an effect that would have on Holmes. Probably little to none but still it is a factor. Then again if the trade is a good one, I am sure the fans will understand.

He's never put on a jock strap, he's never been a coach, he's never been a scout. He's been an administrator and all of a sudden he's an expert. Mel Kiper has no more credentials to do what he's doing than my neighbor and my neighbor is a postman who doesn't even have season tickets to the NFL.😁
