Linked below is an interesting documentary by Adam Curtis, The Century of the Self. The film examines the history of corporate and government use of mass media in an attempt to influence society and culture. It can be argued that in practical terms Edward Bernays was far more influential than his uncle Dr. Freud. The science of 'engineering consent' may be pervasive to the extent of near imperceptibility!
"To many in both politics and business, the triumph of the self is the ultimate expression of democracy, where power has finally moved to the people. Certainly the people may feel they are in charge, but are they really?
The Century of the Self tells the untold and sometimes controversial story of the growth of the mass-consumer society in Britain and the United States. How was the all-consuming self created, by whom, and in whose interests?"

Fascinating stuff to be sure. As the documentary mentioned, Bernays was a true innovator in the realm of PR, yet you can't sleep on the legacy of Ivy Lee. He was the driving force behind the initial branding of ultra-powerful interests that stand to this day (the Rockefellers, Council on Foreign Relations, etc). Very far reaching impact.
