This year several major players (Crosby & Pronger) have been sidelined with serious concussions. Marc Savard & Patrice Bergereon have missed significant time for the Bruins with Concussions.
James Riemer was out for about a month with "Concussion Like Symptons."
Brian Burke of the Toronto Maple Leafs recently held a press conference when he sent Colton Orr down to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. Saying among other things that Orr's reduced role as an enforcer lead to the move.
Enforcers have been around the league for decades. They patrolled the and as the name says enforced their will in the game, while protecting some of the biggest stars of their era. Would Wayne Gretzky have found so much open space if guys weren't afraid of what Marty McSorely (among others) weren't out there watching his back? Would Sid the Kid be sitting out right now if the Penguins had a guy like McSorely or his like on the ice with him?
One of the rules that lead to the decline of the enforcer in the NHL is the Instigator rule, which leads to both a minor penalty and sometimes ejection from a game, that also leads to a suspension. So while an Enforcer is being paid to fight (generally making around the league minimum), he gets punished for doing his job, by the league he plays in.
What do you guys think of this situation?

I'm fine with the instigator rule, just don't like the extra misconduct. Fighting is cool with me, as long as it's not an assault, but two willing combatants. As far as concussions, step one should be to eliminate the armor that's currently masquerading as elbow and shoulder pads.
