Last week a shoot DVD with LOW's Konnan was released called Wrestling Without Borders:
Nowadays at every wrestling show, no matter how big or small or where it is in the world you are almost guaranteed to see something influence by Lucha Libre. 25 year ago if you wanted to see Lucha Libre style matches you had to go to Mexico. It took a small group of pioneers like Rey Mysterio Jr., Psicosis, Eddie Guerrero, La Parka, and Juventud Guerrera to defy the old guard of Lucha Libre and make a push to not just be big stars in Mexico but big stars in the world.
The man at the fore front of this movement who opened all the doors was Konnan. Because of Konnan's look he was able to break in to the states well head of his high flying counter parts. During his time in the states he made some very important connections with the right people. People like Paul Heyman, who was one of the first guys to recognize that there was incredible talent south of the border.
Also the collective creative minds of Konnan and Antonio Pena saw the possibilities of Lucha Libre in the USA. The sold out shows at the LA Sports Arena were proof of their theory.
Once WCW realized what was going on, they jumped on the band wagon. Of course they need someone to move things along and Konnan was that gatekeeper to the south. Even to this day he is considered to be the go-to guy for booking the American wrestlers to come in to Mexico and the guy who sends the great luchadors out into the world.
Konnan may be the only person in world who can talk to us in English about all the ins and outs of the world of Lucha Libre and why its style of wrestling knows no borders.
