NAPWA Year 1 Card 9
05.06 from from Grand Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles CA
- Singles Match -
”Pretty Boy” Bobby Heenan defeated Colt Cabana via pinfall after hitting Cabana with an international object.
Match Notes: Say what you will, there's something about home field advantage that cannot be denied. Case in point, the young man from Beverly Hills rolled into L.A. and got his first NAPWA victory.
"Pretty Boy" Heenan dominated Colt from the opening bell with a combination of focused aggression and dirty tricks. In front of the home town crowd, he got the pin after nailing Cabana with a chain hidden in his boot.
- Try Out Match -
Earl Robert of Eaton defeated Ken Doane via pinfall after hitting the “Tower of London” leg drop.
Match Notes: Earl Robert of Eaton, along with his partner Squire David Taylor, made it clear that they feel that they should have been challenging the Vachons for the tag team championship tonight.
Instead, Eaton was charged with taking promising young up and comer Ken Doane through his paces. These to put on a fast paced match with lots of counters. Eventually, Eaton caught young Doane with a stinging right hand that laid the prospect out in perfect position for the "Tower of London" leg drop from the top rope, after which, the three count was academic.
After the match, Earl Robert offered Doane a hand shake, but in a sign of extreme disrespect, the rookie refused to take the veteran's hand.
- Singles Match -
Hillbilly Jim defeated Rhett Titus via pinfall after a scoop slam.
Match Notes: The rivalry between The All Night Express and the duo of Hillbilly Jim and George "The Animal" Steele keeps chugging along. Though Mudlick's favorite son has yet to crack the puzzle that is Kenny King, he showed here that he can more then handle the man from Long Island's "Temple of Lust".
Jim used his superior power to manhandle Rhett Titus and picked up a convincing win with a scoop slam.
- Singles Match -
Kenny King defeated George “The Animal” Steele using the “Coronation”.
Match Notes: Unlike his partner, Kenny King was able to get it done against The Animal from Detroit. Though King hardly escaped unscathed (in fact, he was heavily masticated as Steele repeatedly bit his ANX rival), King was able to pick up the impressive victory after hitting the Coronation on Steele.
- Singles Match -
Bryan Danielson defeated Eddie Gilbert via submission (LaBell Lock).
Match Notes: This is a rivalry that has gotten real hot, real fast. The American Dragon was looking to get some payback after Gilbert threw fire in his face on card #7. Though the match started out hot and heavy, Gilbert surprised everyone by tapping out the very first time Danielson went for a submission, even though the ropes were within reach.
The referee forced Danielson to release the hold, and a smiling Gilbert slide out of the ring, leaving a frustrated Danielson with the victory, but no satisfaction.
- Hollywood Blvd Street Fight -
The One Man Gang defeated ”Hacksaw” Jim Duggan via pinfall after whipping Duggan into a brick wall.
Match Notes: As the street fight stipulation promised, this was a wild one. A good chunk of the action stayed in the ring, with Duggan and Gang trading haymakers and headbutts, but when the action spilled out of the ring, it dialed up a notch. Both men made use of Duggan's signature 2x4 as they brawled into the stands, at the souvenir stand, and even into the locker room! In the end, Gang launched Duggan head first into a brick wall and was able to make the cover for the pin, giving the First Family a big win over the V Foundation.
- NAPWA Tag Team Championship Match -
NAPWA Tag Team Champions The Vachons defeated Chris Candido and Afa Jr. (with Sunny) via pinfall to retain the championship.
Match Notes: For a time, it seemed the Vachons' title reign would be a brief one, as the tag team champions struggled in their first defense. Chris Candido and Afa Jr. isolated Mad Dog Vachon and worked him over for much of the match. Afa Jr, in particular, dominated Mad Dog, getting several near falls. But, when Candido slipped up and let Mad Dog make the defensive tag, things went down hill fast for the challengers. Butcher came in a house of fire and quickly hit Candido with a running spear and then the Hangman for the victory.
While the champions departed with their gold, a frustrated Afa Jr. shoved Candido in the ring, but Sunny quickly got between her men and defused the situation.
- Main Event -
- North American Championship Match -
NAPWA North American Champion ”Classy” Freddie Blassie (with Jimmy Hart) defeated Lou Thesz via pinfall to retain the championship.
Match Notes: Freddie Blassie is a man of many nicknames. He's been called the "King of Men" and of course everyone knows his self-applied epitaph "Classy", but tonight, it was another of his nicknames that came into play: "The Vampire".
Much like their first meeting in the finals of the North American title tournament, Blassie "Out Brawled" Thesz and Thesz "Out Wrestled" Blassie. Both men got several near falls with their respective styles of preference, but at the end of the fight, Blassie (for the third time in the match) resorted to biting Thesz on the forehead, resulting in a severe laceration.
Though Thesz tried to continue, the lose of blood over came him, and he lost consciousness, allowing Blassie to score an easy pinfall.
As the champion left with his belt, medical staff rushed to see to the challenger who continued to bleed and struggle to get up.
