Obama has openly stated that he is in support of higher domestic energy costs. At $3 a gallon, more costly 'clean' energy solutions aren't attractive to consumers or viable in the marketplace. Yet if you somehow drive the cost of gas, utilities, etc. up high enough, the types of initiatives he and others support become more practical. His theory is that although under his ideal scenario costs would rise sharply in the short term, this in itself would act as a catalyst that would drive the development of new technologies that would ultimately produce a greater 'greener' overall value in the long run. That's why he strongly supported Cap & Trade legislation, which would have artificially raised the cost of energy use across the board. Politically it was effective for him during his first run. It appealed to those concerned about environmental issues (peak oil, pollution, etc). More importantly it appealed to very powerful corporate donors who were lobbying to benefit from the changes in the market that would be forced onto the country (ie. Goldman Sachs projected billions in new revenue from 'carbon trading'). Given current economic realities and the political environment, the whole C&T scheme is now dead in the water. In his own words...

I'm sure we all heard about Dick Cheney having oil execs at the White House for meeting a few months into their term. Hell, i remember in july of 2001 paying $ 1.86 and not being very happy because that was 30 cent jump. but now it's not even supply and demand, it seems to have more to do with speculators on wall street driving up the price. and i may ad all the cable outlets are playing political games over it. One of the sad things to me is that the Government went after Microsoft for a monopoly, but 30 years ago they let the big oil companies gobble up the small ones. I wonder why they let that happen. oh yeah i think i know . $$$ in their pockets.
