In listening to Jimmy Korderas on the Score.com's Ask the Ref podcast, the WWE has multiple canvasses on the ring with plastic between the layers. So after that segment, they just removed a canvass. If you go to a taping live, you will see them changing canvasses. The legend in the gold shirt was Hillbilly Jim.

Ya, the WWE switches canvasses often between matches on TV and PPVs; even if the ring isn't wet. I remember they did it a couple times during the No Way Out PPV I went to in Seattle; once after the Shane/Orton match where they used a table (I'm assuming to get rid of splinters).

It would also help to prevent infection from passing on from one wrestler to another hopefully.

It would also help to prevent infection from passing on from one wrestler to another hopefully. I don't think they let any wrestlers with infections compete (Nigel). Changing the mat would do nothing to help the guy the so called infected guy was wrestling. I just think they change the ring anytime any foreign object/substance gets on it. I saw it changed at Over the Limit (or maybe it was the Rumble? I forget) in Detroit after Mysterio beat Punk in the mask vs hair match because Punk's hair was everywhere. After every other match they just left it alone.

A few years ago at a Raw event they seemed to change it about three or four times in the night. But there were no weird substances on it, at least that the crowd could see.
It was the first time I'd ever seen them do it.

Maybe they just like a nice clean ring for TV viewing. Maybe they don't want wrestlers to get blood and sweat on them. Maybe Vince is entering his Howard Hughes phase of his life, declaring war on germs while walking around backstage in his tissue box slippers. Who knows?

I know that after a certain amount of sweat a canvas becomes as slippery as a sheet of ice.

The WWE also constantly changes the ring skirts, and sometimes the ropes between TV Tapings. I wonder how many ring canvas' they go through during the average year.
