PBS recently aired a thought provoking two part historical documentary titled: Civilization: The West and the Rest with Niall Ferguson. What led the West to be so influential? And how long will the West sustain its supremacy? From law to politics, scientific method to ways of dress, from the 1500s onward, Western Civilization has had a remarkable influence on how the world has been shaped. Today, that influence is waning. Ferguson believes six 'killer apps' allowed Europe (and later even more so America) to rise from poverty and disease, to world hegemony, and changes in that structure, have led to massive debt and a trend of decline. Each episode (linked below) runs just under 2 hours. Program: Civilization: The West and the Rest with Niall Ferguson Episode: Civilization (Part 1)
Program: Civilization: The West and the Rest with Niall Ferguson Episode: Civilization (Part 2)"The two-part series examines Niall Ferguson's six principles of prosperity: Competition, Science, Modern Medicine, Democracy, Consumerism, and Work Ethic. The first part focuses on competition, science, and property, comparing the historical trajectories of the West, China (competition), the Middle East (science), and Latin America (property). The second part focuses on French medicine in Africa, global consumerism, exploring the role of Western goods in the fall of the Eastern Bloc, and the influence of Protestantism on both work and literacy worldwide."Also of possible interest: Courtesy of TED Talks Niall Ferguson: The 6 Killer Apps Of Prosperity
