These are sad but I have had the experience of haggling with Virgil. Not exactly fun.
While it does seem that he never has visitors at his tables, it is worth noting that most tables around him in these pictures don't have visitors either, including Honky Tonk Man.

In all honesty, I believe most are taken from angles to show no other attendees and further the myth, and many are taken before the conventions actually begin (as I believe was the case with the famous photo that started this all). BUT, he does show up in the damndest places where he wasn't invited and sets up those tables.
Also, sometimes he just walks around randomly selling 8x10s wherever there's a card show or wrestling event. I've heard firsthand accounts and read stories about him showing up when people are lined up for some signing and walking up and down the line trying to sell his photos. Two years in a row at Wizardworld Chicago I was witness to the "Virgil haggle" and the amazing line of bull he shoots to anyone who will listen. He name drops like you wouldn't believe; stuff about "his close personal friend Shaq", "the time he wrestled Hogan in Japan"-- pretty much everything you've heard or read about "the Virgil show" is true.

My favorite Virgil memory was when he came to GCON and got mad when the GWF set was released. He was upset that everyone was really into it (and not him).
Virgil: What's that! (pointing to my cards as I put them in plastic sleeves)
Me: The game
Virgil: What the game!?
Me: The whole reason you are here.
Virgil: (long pause) those guys aren't even real.
Ah, good times.

I remember him being there. He looked like he wanted to be anywhere else and I think the feeling was mutual.
