Data production company Crashplan has produced this infographic on the expected lifespans of popular media types used to save different formats. Includes a look at computer data, photos, videos and audio. In terms of the safety of the cloud and back up lasting 'forever', the Megaupload/U.S. Department of Justice debacle shows that what conceivably belongs to an account, can be confiscated by a third party without appeal or compensation. From a practical standpoint, Gmail storage has never failed me. Mozy has also been effective for remote access/auto back ups. For immediate term storage, old fashioned external hard drive use has also proved effective. "As each new form of data storage comes on the scene, the market is at first enamored with its compactness, convenience and hoped-for data longevity. But invariably, the reality of physical vulnerability and a limited lifespan remains. Eventually, all media fails, but Cloud backup is forever."
