CM Punk Ranked No. 1 In 2012 "PWI 500" List, Female Wrestler Ranked
On Aftermath Radio Monday night (listen here), Pro Wrestling Illustrated Senior Writer Dan Murphy announced that CM Punk has been ranked No. 1 in the 2012 "PWI 500."
The list, which is now in its twenty-second year, ranks the top five-hundred professional wrestlers in the world. During the evaluation period for the 2012 "PWI 500," from June 1, 2011, to May 31, 2012, Punk won seven consecutive WWE Championship matches on pay-per-view.
Punk joins an elite class of wrestlers with his accomplishment. Past winners include Hulk Hogan (1991), Sting (1992), Bret Hart (1993 and 1994), Diesel (1995), Shawn Michaels (1996), Dean Malenko (1997), Steve Austin (1998 and 1999), Triple H (2000 and 2009), Kurt Angle (2001), Rob Van Dam (2002), Brock Lesnar (2003), Chris Benoit (2004), Batista (2005), John Cena (2006 and 2007), Randy Orton (2008), AJ Styles (2010) and The Miz (2011).
Murphy also revealed that Sara Del Rey became the fourth female ever to make the list (following Miss Texas, Madd Maxxine, and Chyna) by virtues over her victory over male wrestlers in CHIKARA.
The digital edition of the "PWI 500" will be released on Thursday via PWI-Online.com while the printed copy hits newsstands September 18

To hell with Punk. What really matters is, who was #500?

I actually met Punk just a few days ago in Los Angeles at the WWE AXXESS session prior to the start of Summerslam and he was really cool. I am glad PWI did the right thing by correctly recognizing him as really "the best in the world" with this #1 ranking!

Note: What I have noted in the digital release of the magazine thus far, in what may be an error, is that there is no one listed as #204 on the list as it goes from #203 to #205, while WWE superstar Bray Wyatt is listed at #167 and #244, so hopefully Pro Wrestling Illustrated can clear up those issues in the coming days.
The full list is below: 1. CM Punk 2. Bobby Roode 3. John Cena 4. Daniel Bryan 5. Sheamus 6. Jun Akiyama 7. Davey Richards 8. Kurt Angle 9. Mark Henry 10. Alberto del Rio 11. Hiroyoshi Tenzan 12. These people clearly need to look at the Midwest picture a bit more. Jeremy Wyatt isn't on there but Mike Sydal is? Wyatt, a 3XW regular stole the show most of last year and this year. Went to to toe with Pearce, incredible Iron Man matches with Sterling...holds belts wherever he goes. Sadly overlooked...same for Mark Sterling as well. I know there's not room for everyone, but those 2 have done more than some of these other jokers on here. Wyatt was even ranked #8 for a while in the NWA rankings in PWI besides being the NWA Central States and Kansas champion. /rant.

Every local Indy fanatic is gonna be hurt his favorite hometown crush didn't make the list. I can name 20-30 guys from CHIKARA who aren't on that list I'd pay to see wrestle before Jeremy Wyatt or anyone from that fed. Once you get past the top 100 is all just subjective filler anyways. Plus, it's PWI. Who jumped the shark a long time ago.

As I heard Bill Apter explain it, when he was there it was a big meeting/argument to place the top twenty names, then they handed it off to the lower rung staff members to compile the entire rest of the list. Most times it comes down to who the editors or writers know or who makes themselves known to them. This is why the list has so many east coast independents on it every year. I was happy to see Mexico so well represented for a change.
And yes, don't take the list too seriously (at all): I've seen guy retired for years show up again, guys listed two times under their different names (in vastly different parts of the list), and even deceased wrestlers get ranked.

And yes, don't take the list too seriously (at all): I've seen guy retired for years show up again, guys listed two times under their different names (in vastly different parts of the list), and even deceased wrestlers get ranked. Adding to this, the PWI rankings in each magazine are sent in individually by each promotion rather than carefully put together by PWI themselves. Ever notice CHIKARA doesn't have rankings? Cause CHIKARA doesn't send them any. Literally, ANYONE could make PWI's rankings if a selected promoter sends the name in on a list. If Jeremy Wyatt isn't in the top 500, it's more likely because not enough promoters put his name on their rankings when they sent them into PWI rather than the guys at PWI over-looking him. They probably never even heard of him, honestly. The bigger question is, who the hell was supposed to be # 204?
