LUCHA LEGEND EMILIO CHARLES JR. PASSES AWAY "El Rey del Beautiful" Emilio Charles Jr. who was one of the best rudo workers of the 80's & 90's passed away yesterday due to kidney failure at the age of 56. Emilio was trained by the legendary Diablo Velasco before making his debut in Guadalajara in February 1980. It wasn't long before Emilio rose up the cards around indy cards in the DF. 1983 was his breakout year as he would face Villano III in a hair match on 9/29/83 at Arena Xalapa, which he would lose but he became a top rudo for the tecnicos to work with because of his bumping ability and ability of being a good base for the dives.
1985 saw Emilio become one of the top rudos in EMLL, teaming with such greats as El Dandy & Fuerza Guerrera while starting to develop chemistry with tecnicos like Atlantis, Javier Cruz, Americo Rocca, and others.

That's a name I haven't thought about in years. EC Jr. was a very solid performer, in the mold of a rudo Dick Murdoch (great ring general, outstanding bump taking skills, deceptively acrobatic, with even a bit of strategic comedy). I didn't see his work in the context of his run as it was happening, but compilations show he was a standout talent who is well worth looking back on. For those who may be interested, I included links to him challenging Atlantis for the NWA World Middleweight Championship in '88, along with the long awaited EC Jr./El Dandy hair vs hair rematch. Beyond this thread, I highly recommend their earlier bout from 7/28/89, a lucha classic that ended in a draw, and saw both men lose their hair! RIP Emilio Charles, Jr. vs Atlantis 7/17/88 (Part 1) and (Part 2)
