He's got the tools to succeed. The WWE attitude seems to be "funny doesn't equal money", which is off considering how many bad jokes and skits they love to cram into their shows, so I don't know if his light-hearted character will survive or not. However, they did sign him for a reason and, with Laurinitis no longer the talent scout, they did so knowing what they've got. Dude can definitely transition to the WWE style, that's not even a consideration. Any top-level wrestler can easily make that switch without sacrificing too much of what made him special on the independents (see Daniel Bryan Danielson).
I imagine they'll put him on NXT for a little while, but I don't think he'll languish down there like Seth Rollins did if they actually plan on using him more or less "as is" without too much in the way of altering his character or persona. The only hurdle I see with him is if he can "get over" with Vince McMahon or not. McMahon seems to be ceding a lot of power to Triple H, but in the end he's still the decision maker. If Vince doesn't get what a guy does, even if the fans take to him, that wrestler will not make it in the WWE.
IN summary, he brings something special to the WWE that will help him stand out more than the average guy. If they get behind and know what to do with that is a different matter.
