Card #529: Louisville Gardens
1) Nacho Barrera picked up a quick win via disqualification in the opener over George South. Barrera came out rough against South from the opening bell. He took South to the corner and raked his eyes. South got fired up and tossed Barrera in the corner. He started pounding away on the Mexican grappler. Tommy Marlin started putting the count on South but South responded by shoving Marlin to the mat! Marlin was shocked and immediately called for the bell, disqualifying South in one minute! Barrera gloated about another victory over South but the Louisville fans were not happy about this win! DUD (NOTE: For those that roll twice for DQs, I did that for South, and even with his DQ rating of “3,” he rolled snake eyes twice in a row!)
2) Baron Von Raschke’s frustrations with S.D. Jones continued, as he lost to “Special Delivery” via DQ in eight minutes! “The Clawmaster” was aggressive at the bell. He hit an atomic drop a few minutes into the bout, which is how he pinned Jones’s tag team partner S.T. Jones last month in Gore Springs. This time Von Raschke only got a two-count. Jones battled back, nailed Von Raschke with a series of punches, before doing a Philly Shuffle, and then nailing one big last punch, sending Von Raschke to the floor! Von Raschke climbed in by the count of eight. The two battled back and forth. Von Raschke had the advantage and sent “Philadelphia’s Favorite Son” into the corner. He charged in for a tackle but Jones dodged Von Raschke and the German’s shoulder hit the ring post! He rolled to the floor and recovered but was definitely frustrated as he stomped around ringside. Von Raschke grabbed a steel chair from ringside and smashed Jones, who was leaning over the top rope, in the face with it! Sam Platania saw this and disqualified Von Raschke! Von Raschke returned to the back in anger! *¾
3) Hugh Morrus continued his winning ways, with a pinfall on “The Anarchist” Arik Cannon. Cannon put up a good fight against Morrus but couldn’t keep the crazy man down for long. Morrus hit a spinebuster and hit a crazy series of leg and elbow drops, stomping about before releasing a maniacal laugh. Morrus hit the impressive No Laughing Matter to pin Cannon after four minutes. Morrus is 3-0 but he will face a tough customer in Doug Gilbert on New Year’s Eve! ½*
4) John and Chris Tolos picked up a win via countout after 18 minutes over Hillbilly Jim and Cousin Luke. The hillbillies put up a valiant effort against the vicious Toloses. The Tolos Brothers pounded on Jim in their corner and scored a near fall. Jim finally tagged to Luke and Luke surprised Chris with the Hillbilly Drop. Chris kicked out at two. Later John was the legal man and used the corkscrew on Luke. The Toloses then took Luke to their corner and beat on him, as they had done to Jim earlier. They busted Luke open. John tossed Luke out of the ring and followed him. Chris jumped into the ring to get Jim and Tommy Marlin’s attention. Meanwhile, John grabbed Luke’s “lucky” horseshoe from the hillbillies’ corner and wrapped the chain around Luke’s neck! Jim finally spotted John and ran him off. Despite Jim’s help, Luke couldn’t beat the count, so the Toloses got another win! ***
5) Ray “The Crippler” Stevens took a bloody beating but rallied back to beat The Patriot! The masked man had the early advantage, hitting an atomic drop a few minutes into the bout for a two-count. Stevens later hit the American masked man with a jumping knee smash for a near fall of his own. Patriot later fought back and hit the Uncle Slam. He went for a cover but the former Mid-America champion got a foot on the bottom rope for a break. The Patriot hit Stevens with big right hands, busting him open, and then followed up with a power slam for another two. Stevens took control in a brawl outside the ring. Back inside, he hit the Bombs Away for a near fall. He maintained control and went up to the top rope again. Patriot got to his feet so Stevens couldn’t hit the Bombs Away but instead, “The Crippler” dove off with a flying body press. He covered Patriot and hooked the tights to score the pinfall after 20 minutes! Stevens and Jimmy Hart quickly retreated to the back. Stevens got the win here but can he climb the ladder and win the Mid-America title on New Year’s Eve? ***¾
6) “Superstar” Bill Dundee picked up a big win over his rival Doctor X in about 12 minutes. This was a back-and-forth bout between these two. X at one point rammed Dundee’s head into the ring post and almost scored a countout win but Dundee rolled back into the ring by the count of nine. Back in the ring, X hit a dropkick but missed on a second attempt. Dundee hit a big splash and scored a two-count. He went up top and hit the Superstar Bomb to score the pin. The Louisville fans gave the “Superstar” a big ovation for his win and he is fired up to battle X’s ally Mad Dog Vachon in a Dog Collar Match on December 31! **½
7) Southern Heavyweight champion “Exotic” Adrian Street defeated “The Road Dogg” Brian Armstrong by disqualification in an exciting non-title match. This was Louisville native Jim Cornette’s first appearance on the card and he was not welcomed in his hometown! Former Mid-America champion Armstrong surprised Street in this bout. He reversed a whip by Street, swept his legs, and catapulted him into the turnbuckle a few minutes into the bout, which busted open the “Exotic One.” Street fell to the floor and was almost counted out but with Cornette’s screaming and Mr. Hughes’s help, he got back into the ring. Armstrong went for a family specialty—the sleeper. Street started to drop but raked Armstrong’s face to break up the hold. Street went for his own submission with the Cobra Clutch. “The Road Dogg” started to drop. Tom Branch checked Armstrong’s arm. It dropped twice but on the third try, he popped back up. He started to get to his feet but the Southern champ pulled Armstrong’s hair to break his momentum. Street whipped Armstrong into the ropes and caught him on the rebound with the crucifix. Armstrong kicked out at 2¾. The bout was back and forth. Street briefly had the advantage and tried to whip “The Road Dogg” into the buckles but Armstrong blocked it, booted him in the gut, grabbed him, and hit the pump handle slam! He went for the cover but “The Louisville Slugger” got up on the ring apron and distracted Branch. Armstrong went after Cornette but Hughes stepped in front of him. Armstrong turned his attention back to Street who had gotten to his feet but Armstrong hit a second pump handle. He again went for the cover but Cornette again distracted Branch. This time, Hughes came in and blasted Armstrong in the face with a big right hand. As Hughes left the ring and Cornette got off the apron, Bob and Brad Armstrong came out to the ringside area! Both Brian and Street were hurting but the Southern champ recovered first and grabbed Brian, hitting a vertical suplex. He made a cover, putting his feet on the second rope right in front of the Armstrongs knowing they were there! “Bullet” Bob got fired up and knocked Street’s feet off the ropes! He and Brad jumped in the ring and attacked Street, irate by Cornette and Hughes’s involvement. Branch had no choice but to disqualify Brian after 27 minutes of an intense match! Several USWA referees and officials were quickly on the scene to separate the two groups, knowing what could happen. The Armstrongs returned to the locker room, since Hughes and Cornette were up for the next match. You can bet the Georgians are looking forward to getting Hughes and the World Tag Team champions the Heavenly Bodies in the ring on New Year’s Eve in Nashville! ***½
8) Mr. Hughes and Jim Cornette stayed in the ring. Hughes scored a huge win over former World champion “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson. Cornette’s bodyguard was aggressive at the start. He blasted Danielson with a big boot for a near fall early in the bout. He lifted up Danielson high in the air with a choke and dropped him hard to the mat and then went for a cover for another two-count. Hughes hit the spike slam but Danielson kicked out. With the fans behind him, “Dragon” fought back and caught Hughes in the guillotine choke. Hughes lifted up Danielson while in the choke and drove Danielson back-first into the buckles. Danielson recovered and got Hughes down on the mat into the LeBell Lock. With Cornette’s encouragement, Hughes managed to make the ropes for a break. Danielson knocked the bodyguard out of the ring and then followed up with a suicide dive, driving Hughes into the guard railing. He hit the back of his head and was busted open. Danielson rolled back into the ring to break Sam Platania’s count and then rolled back out to the apron. He dove off with a flying knee strike but Cornette managed to get Hughes out of the way and Danielson crashed into the guard railing, hitting his ribs. Hughes tossed “Dragon” back into the ring and hit a power bomb for a near fall. Hughes pounded away on Danielson, busting him open as well. He then tossed Danielson into the ropes and caught him on the rebound with the spike slam. He covered Danielson and scored the pinfall after16 minutes. Cornette was definitely happy that his two charges both came out victorious in his hometown! How will this impact Danielson before he challenges “Exotic” Adrian Street for the Southern Heavyweight title on December 31? ****½
9) In a clash of two popular wrestlers, Pepper Gomez pinned Brad Armstrong in 12 minutes to retain the USWA Mid-America Heavyweight championship. Both competitors shook hands before the bout in a great sign of respect. The action in this was largely scientific. A few minutes into the bout, Gomez went for an Armstrong specialty—the sleeperhold. The challenger got to the ropes before too much pressure could be applied. Armstrong rallied back and scored a near fall after a two-handed bulldog. The champion swept the challenger’s legs, got him down on the mat, and went for the Mexican cradle but Armstrong managed to kick out. Armstrong took over with a dropkick for another two-count. Gomez rallied back and hit a Mexican Leap but couldn’t keep his opponent down for long. He sent Armstrong into the ropes and then bounced off the opposite ropes. After crisscrossing a few times, Gomez surprised Armstrong in the middle of the ring with a small package to score the pinfall. Armstrong was surprised by the sudden pin but congratulated Gomez on his win and wished him well in his Ladder Match defense against Ray “The Crippler” Stevens at New Year’s Knockout! ***
10) The main event was an intense six-man tag team match. All three Gilberts—Tommy, Eddie, and Doug took on the House of Humperdink’s team of World Heavyweight champion “Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan, “The Russian Bear” Ivan Koloff, and Mr. Saito. As expected, this was a wild bout from the opening bell. The World champion stayed on the ring apron to avoid any contact with any of the Gilberts, while Koloff and Saito did the dirty work. Koloff surprised Doug with the Russian Sickle early in the bout but Eddie made a save. Eddie tagged in and had Koloff in trouble but he managed to tag Saito. Meanwhile, Saito and Sullivan snuck around the ring and brawled with Tommy and Doug. Sullivan used a chair on Tommy, while Saito smashed Doug with Humperdink’s cane, taking them both out of the match. Saito and the World champion returned to the House of Humperdink’s corner, where Sullivan tagged in for the first time in the match. Koloff executed a Russian Hammer and Sullivan hit the double foot stomp to score the pinfall in eight minutes. Sullivan got a lot of momentum going into the Singapore Spike Match for the World title in Nashville in 13 days! *
