Thanks to Victory Roll for the comments!
May 28, 2018 (Memorial Day) Card #546: Engel Stadium in Chattanooga
1) Luke Harper picked up a win in the opener in six minutes over The Amish RoadKill. While the Nebraskan dominated much of the action, “The Angry Amish Warrior” had his moments. This was a battle of big men who can move well for their size. Harper hit a top rope clothesline a few minutes into the match for a near fall. RoadKill took over after Harper missed a running big boot outside the ring and kicked the ring post. RoadKill tossed him back in and then came off the top with the Amish Splash for a two-count. RoadKill lifted Harper up for the Barn Burner but Harper grabbed the top rope and pulled both men to the floor. RoadKill took the brunt of the fall and was hurt, as Tyler Black’s bodyguard recovered and hit an impressive slam onto the ring steps! He tossed RoadKill back into the ring and covered him to score the pinfall! *
2) The Patriot took a lot of punishment but rallied back to defeat Hugh Morrus. Morrus scored near falls on the former World champion with a spinebuster and later a top rope elbow. It looked as if the laughing man would get his biggest win to date but with huge “USA” chants, the masked American took over. He caught Morrus with a power slam for a two-count. The Patriot soared off the top with the Patriot Missile, knocking heads with Morrus and busting him open. He covered Morrus but Sir Oliver Humperdink distracted Frank Morrell. The Patriot stayed in control and hit the Uncle Slam to pick up the victory after eight minutes! ***¼
3) “The Monday Night Messiah” Tyler Black was victorious on Memorial Day, pinning Jake “The Milkman” Milliman. Fresh off his victory in the opener, Luke Harper was back at ringside, accompanying Black. Black dominated his opponent and got the win in about three minutes with the Curb Stomp. Black has his sights set on “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson and the Southern Heavyweight championship next month in Tuscaloosa! DUD
4) “Exotic” Adrian Street scored a huge pinfall over two-time former USWA World Heavyweight champion “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant in a 24-minute battle. This was a physical battle between these two flamboyant superstars. Valiant hit the Boogie Woogie elbow about five minutes into the bout but Street was near the ropes and was able to get a foot on the bottom rope. Valiant stayed on the offensive and hit a neckbreaker for another near fall. The two-time former Southern champion Street fought back and worked over Valiant’s leg, using the London Bridge Leglock several times. Street caught “Handsome” Jimmy in the crucifix but Valiant kicked out. Street continued to attack the legs, including ramming Valiant’s right leg into the ring post. He landed an elbow drop across the same leg and covered him to score the somewhat surprising pinfall! As Street got his hand raised by Jerry Calhoun, the battle wasn’t over, as Jim Cornette and Mr. Hughes entered the ring. The bodyguard stomped on Valiant’s injured leg and then held Valiant down. Street came off the second rope several times, stomping the leg. Suddenly, “Wildfire” Tommy Rich, the Flying Redheads, and Mid-America champ Pepper Gomez came sprinting out of the locker room and ran off Street, Hughes, and “The Louisville Slugger.” Valiant was in a lot of pain and needed help getting to the back from Rich and Gomez, while the Redheads stayed in the ring for their own match. (“Superstar” Bill Dundee was not present at Engel Stadium since he was not booked to wrestle on this card.) ***¾
5) The First Family of Wrestling team of Ray “The Crippler” Stevens and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine continued their winning ways by defeating the former World Tag Team champions The Flying Redheads. Red Bastien and Stevens started off the bout for their respective teams. Bastien surprised Stevens in the first two minutes with a sleeper. As Stevens fought for the ropes, Bastien managed to pull him towards the Redheads’ corner, where Bastien kept on the sleeper but also tagged to Billy Red Lyons. Lyons leapt over the top rope, as Bastien released the hold but shoved Stevens toward Lyons, who caught “The Crippler” in his own sleeper! Stevens quickly grabbed the ropes. When Lyons released the hold, Stevens quickly scrambled to the corner to tag Valentine. The advantage was back and forth for a few minutes, when the Redheads regained control, as Lyons hit his partner Bastien’s finisher of the atomic drop (minus the airplane spin) and scored a near fall on Stevens. Bastien tagged in a few minutes later and hit his specialized version of the atomic drop, sending “The Crippler” flying up and over the top rope and to the floor! Stevens hit his head on the ring apron outside the ring and was busted open. With Valentine’s help and Jimmy Hart screaming encouragement through the megaphone, Stevens got back into the ring. Lyons tagged back in and went for the figure-four leglock. Stevens managed to get to the ropes for a break. Lyons went for a flying head scissors but Stevens dropped him toward the First Family’s corner. Valentine reached up and dropped Lyons throat-first across the top rope. Stevens tagged to “The Hammer,” and the duo double teamed Lyons for several minutes. Valentine went for his figure-four but with Bastien and the fans cheering him on, the Nova Scotia native made the ropes. Stevens tagged back in and came off the top rope immediately with the Bombs Away. He covered Lyons and scored the pin, while Valentine stopped an intervening Bastien from a save. The First Family scored an impressive win over the former World Tag Team champions in 18 minutes! ***½
6) “Wildfire” Tommy Rich rallied back to defeat John Tolos in 14 minutes. It looked as if Tolos might give Rich his first loss in the USWA, as he went to work on him right at the bell. He got Rich down on the mat and hit a standing knee drop to score a near fall. Tolos came off the ropes with the flying knee drop shortly thereafter but Rich again kicked out. Rich reversed a whip into the buckles and caught Tolos on the rebound with a piledriver to score a two-count. As both men got back to their feet, Rich whipped Tolos into the ropes and caught him on the rebound with the Thesz Press. The move put down Tolos for the 1-2-3. The Chattanooga fans gave Rich a big ovation for his win! ***
7) The World Tag Team champions Brad and Brian Armstrong were victorious in a non-title grudge match over Mad Dog Vachon and Baron Von Raschke. “The Road Dogg” and the Mad Dog started off the bout for their respective teams. Former Mid-America champion Brian surprised the Algerian brawler with a schoolboy roll-up seconds into the bout for a near fall. Brad tagged in and came off the top rope with a flying body press but Vachon caught him and dropped him with a backbreaker. He went for a pin attempt but Brad kicked out. Brad went for a breather near the ropes but Vachon seized the opportunity and hit the Mad Dog Pounce. “The Clawmaster” tagged into the bout for the first time. The rulebreakers double teamed Brad for several minutes until he made the tag to his brother. Brian dropped Vachon on the ropes and hit his own rope straddle (similar to the Mad Dog Pounce). He pulled Vachon off the ropes and scored a two-count. Later in the match, Brian sent Von Raschke into the corner and charged in at him with a double sledge but the German grappler caught him with the brain claw. Brian quickly got to the ropes before Von Raschke could sink in the move. Vachon tagged back in and hit another backbreaker and then later the piledriver but Brian managed to kick out. Vachon choked Brian on the ropes and then pounded on his face before hitting another Mad Dog Pounce. As Jerry Calhoun warned Vachon about his tactics, Von Raschke nailed Brian with a boot to the face, busting him open. Vachon continued his punishment but Brian maneuvered him closer to the Armstrongs’ corner, where he was able to tag Brad. The champs pounded on Vachon with fists, busting him open as well. Vachon briefly took control, sending Brad into the ropes. Vachon telegraphed a backdrop and Brad surprised him with a sunset flip for a near fall. Suddenly, Doctor X made his way to the ringside area, standing by his allies. The champions continued to control Vachon. X reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an object, which he slipped into his mask. Brad went to set up for the Russian leg sweep but Von Raschke entered the ring. Brian did as well and those two slugged it out in the corner, while Calhoun tried to get them out of the ring. X stood up on the ring apron and distracted Brad. This allowed Vachon to recover and grab Brad by the arms. X went to head butt Brad but suddenly “Bullet” Bob Armstrong was at ringside and grabbed the masked man’s leg. X kicked him off. He went to head butt Brad but the Georgian got loose and X struck his own ally! Bob pulled X off the apron and slammed him on the ground! As a bloodied Vachon stumbled around dazed, Brad caught him and hit the Russian leg sweep. He covered Vachon and Calhoun turned around to count the pin! The Chattanooga fans popped big for the Armstrongs’ win in a great 20-minute tag team match! ****½
8) “Classy” Freddie Blassie picked up a tainted but hard-earned win over King Kong Bundy in 14 minutes. This was a physical battle with Bundy trying to defeat and injure “The King of Men” prior to him challenging Bundy’s First Family of Wrestling ally Harley Race for the USWA title on June 11 in Nashville. Bundy hit a huge knee drop a couple minutes into the bout for a two-count. Blassie recovered and choked Bundy in the corner. Jimmy Hart went right to the corner, screaming at Blassie through the megaphone. Blassie released the choke and kicked at “The Mouth of The South.” Bundy recovered and sent Blassie into the corner, where he followed up with the Atlantic City Avalanche. The New Jersey got a three-count but then when he demanded his five-count from Frank Morrell, Blassie kicked out at 4¾! “The Vampire” battled back and drew blood on the big man by biting his forehead. Bundy stumbled around dazed by the blood. Blassie started going up the ropes but before he could hit, with the help of Hart’s directions, Bundy grabbed Blassie and slammed him hard to the mat. Bundy hit a second knee drop, busting open Blassie too and made a cover for another two-count. It looked as if Bundy was about to get the win, as he knocked Blassie out of the ring. Blassie started getting back up and Bundy went to grab him. Blassie nailed Bundy with a low blow, which Morrell couldn’t see due to Bundy’s large frame. Bundy dropped to the mat and Blassie jumped back into the ring. He covered the big man and scored the pinfall! The fans favored “The Hollywood Fashion Plate” tonight and cheered for his sneaky win. Blassie gloated to Hart about defeating Bundy and told him he’s coming for Race and the World title in two weeks! ****
9) In one of the biggest upsets in USWA history, “Dastardly” Danny Doring captured his first singles championship by defeating Pepper Gomez to win the USWA Mid-America Heavyweight championship! The challenger was accompanied by his tag team partner the Amish RoadKill. It looked as if Gomez would retain quickly, as he caught a charging Doring with a small package just seconds into the bout for a near fall. Gomez picked up Doring and executed an airplane spin. He dropped Doring and covered him but the “Dastardly One” got a shoulder up. Doring surprised Gomez with a Bareback and then went up top for the Danaconda. He covered the champion but “The Man with The Cast Iron Stomach” kicked out. Gomez rallied back and executed a flying head scissors for another near fall. Midway through the bout, Doring took control for a moment. He whipped Gomez into the corner but Gomez reversed it and sent Doring flying into the top turnbuckle and over the top rope to the floor! The crash knocked off the top turnbuckle pad and Doring looked as if he was going to get counted out but with “The Angry Amish Warrior’s” help, got back in the ring by eight. Gomez stayed in control and landed a Mexican Leap across Doring’s face, busting him open. He went for a pin with the Mexican cradle but Doring got a foot on the bottom rope. Gomez missed a dropkick and landed hard. Doring hit another Danaconda but again Gomez kicked out. The `champion regained control and had Doring in trouble. He charged in at Doring but the challenger sidestepped him and executed a drop toehold. Whether Doring knew or not, he sent Gomez head-first into the same top turnbuckle that had been exposed. Gomez’ head hit the metal rod hard and he was knocked out. A bloodied Doring rolled onto Gomez and scored the pin after 12 minutes to win the Mid-America title. RoadKill helped his partner up and Doring seemed shocked by his own win! Once Joe Wheeler handed him the Mid-America title belt, Doring celebrated with a Dastardly Strut! The Flying Redheads came to the ring to check on Gomez and help him to the back. ****
10) The main event was match #5 in the Seven Levels of Hate series, with a Loser-Leaves-Town for one year stipulation for the loser. Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana took on “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce in the first ever “I Quit” Match in USWA history! Going into this bout, the score was tied, 2-2. Referee Jerry Calhoun was equipped with a wireless microphone for the entire bout to ask either man at any point in the match if he wanted to quit. Pearce focused his attack for the entire match on Cabana’s neck, using a hangman’s neckbreaker and swinging neckbreaker. About 10 minutes into the bout, he used the jumping piledriver twice in a row and had Calhoun ask Cabana if he wanted to quit. The host of The Art of Wrestling was in a lot of pain but would not quit. Pearce got on top of Cabana and punched away at him, busting him open. Cabana came back with some offense but Pearce took over, as Mr. Hughes handed him a chair. Pearce nailed Cabana with the chair. He continued the attack on the neck and pressed the chair into Cabana’s neck trying to get him to quit. Cabana fought out of the hold and kicked Pearce in the stomach. He got to his feet and blasted Pearce with a flying hip attack. He grabbed “Scrap Iron” and hit the Colt .45. He couldn’t go for the pin but continued to punish Pearce, trying to get him to quit. Cabana blasted Pearce with a folding Thesz Press and then pounded on Pearce with punches to bust him open as well. That’s how Cabana won match #3, the First Blood Match, last month in Evansville. The blood couldn’t end this match but Cabana asked Calhoun for the mic. He continued punching Pearce but Pearce wouldn’t quit. Cabana stayed on the offensive for a few minutes but missed a running double knee strike in the corner when Hughes shoved Pearce out of the way so that Cabana crashed into the buckles. Pearce tried to attack the injured knees by locking on a figure-four leglock. Cabana wouldn’t quit but broke the hold by poking Pearce in the eyes. Pearce went back to the neck, hitting another swinging neckbreaker. He grabbed the chair again and hit the jumping piledriver on the chair. He then used the chair and put Cabana’s head inside it, between the back of the chair and the seat itself. He then lifted Cabana up into a hangman’s submission. With the chair around his neck and not wanting to risk severe injury, Cabana spoke into the microphone “I quit!” Calhoun called for the bell and awarded Pearce the match after 30 minutes. Jim Cornette and Hughes, joined Pearce in the celebration and Pearce now took the lead 3-2 in this series! ****½

a big win for Danny Doring!
Adam Pearce is just 1 win away from winning this Best of 7 series against Colt Cabana, Pearce won their Best of 7 series in my fed last year so it will be interesting to see if Colt Cabana can make a comeback here.

The Armstrongs are looking great with the gold and the fans are certainly appreciating their efforts... Stoked for the inevitable clash between Race and Blassie with the top prize on the line... And regardless of how he was booked to win, you gotta love Doring's 'Never Say Die' attitude - it was nothing short of a career defining moment.
I've been cheering for Scrap Iron since this feud with Cabana began and I'm so pleased that he's only one victory away from sending good, ol' Boom Boom packing... Let's finish this Seven Levels of Hate series, gentlemen... Why prolong the suffering? HA!
Exceptional stuff from start to finish, my friend... As always!

The Seven Levels of Hate series has been outstanding. I'm pulling for Adam Pearce, so it was nice to see him take a 3-2 lead. Pearce could clinch it in the next bout.
That whole card was outstanding, especially with one of my all-time favorites Fred Blassie coming out on top over King Kong Bundy. I can't wait for Blassie to take on Race for the championship. I would also love to see Ray Stevens & Greg Valentine go against Brad & Brian Armstrong for the tag titles.
Last but not least a big congrats to Danny Doring on winning the Mid-America championship from Pepper Gomez. A big upset and a great match to boot.

Thanks to Zeke Vegas, Troy, Victory Roll, Pariah, and Crue Fan for the comments!
Highlights from the last two episodes of USWA Championship Wrestling:
June 2: • After his huge upset last week in Engel Stadium, it was announced that “Dastardly” Danny Doring’s first defense of the USWA Mid-America Heavyweight championship will be a rematch against two-time former champion Pepper Gomez. That bout will take place on June 25 at the USWA’s debut at the Jaycees Fairground Arena in Tuscaloosa, AL! Doring, accompanied by The Amish RoadKill, was interviewed in studio and sported some extra fancy clothes. Lance Russell congratulated Doring on his win and Doring blew him off saying that neither Lance nor the fans believed in him but he proved them all wrong! Lance pointed out that Gomez was knocked out by hitting an exposed turnbuckle. Doring brushed off that comment and said that the result will be the same in Tuscaloosa! As the Mid-America champ left the WMC-TV Studios, RoadKill walked up to Lance’s microphone and uttered “Chickens!” • Commissioner Theodore Long announced that match #6 of the Seven Levels of Hate series will now be the second half of a huge double main event on the June 18 card at the Rupp Arena in Lexington! Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana and “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce will battle it out in an Alley Fight Match! This match is no-disqualification and no-countouts and consists of multiple falls until one wrestler cannot stand for a 10-count. This will be only the fourth Alley Fight in USWA history, as this is a brutal match that often involves one or both wrestlers sustaining an injury! This bout will headline the card, along with the USWA World Tag Team title match between The Armstrongs and The Toloses! • Cabana was interviewed later in the show and was sporting a neck brace from the “I Quit” Match last week in Chattanooga. He said that it pained him to have to utter those words but he knew that if he didn’t, he was risking further injury and having to forfeit the whole series. Lance reminded him that with Pearce taking the lead in a series, if “Scrap Iron” wins the Alley Fight the series is over and Cabana must leave the USWA for one year. Cabana says he plans to rest up and come ready for an Alley Fight in Lexington on the 18th! • Speaking of injuries, it was revealed that two-time former World and Southern champion “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant suffered a leg injury in the attack by “Exotic” Adrian Street and Mr. Hughes last week in Chattanooga. “The Boy from New York City” will be out of action for about one month.
June 9: • Commissioner Long announced the first match-up for Independence Day Bash 2018, which will take place (as always!) on July 4, this year from Tim McCarver Stadium in Memphis. The Patriot will receive a rematch for the USWA World Heavyweight title in the main event! He will either challenge Harley Race or “Classy” Freddie Blassie, depending on the outcome of their title match next week in Nashville. The masked American was interviewed in-studio and thanked the commissioner for this opportunity. He said that he was robbed at Derby City Stampede because of the First Family of Wrestling’s tactics. He said that it’s very fitting that he gets another title shot on America’s birthday and that he is going to do his best to make the USA and the fans proud! • In preparation for his bout with Race, The Patriot has signed for two singles matches with members of the First Family of Wrestling. The first one will take place next week. (See Card #547 preview below.) The second will be on June 18 at the Rupp Arena, when he faces former Texas champion Greg “The Hammer” Valentine! While Valentine presently is part of a successful tag team with Ray “The Crippler” Stevens, he has a great singles history in the USWA, with a long winning streak in 2007. This should be a great match-up! • As part of Commissioner Long’s new talent initiative, another new face will soon appear in the USWA, when Mike Jackson debuts in his home state of Alabama on the June 25 card in Tuscaloosa! Jackson has competed most recently in Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW) and Southeast Championship Wrestling (SCW). In SCW, he held the Alabama Jr. Heavyweight championship. He is a great technical wrestler and can surprise many a foe!
The USWA kicks off the summer with its annual summer card from the Nashville Fairgrounds on June 11! • “Bullet” Bob Armstrong will battle Doctor X! The battles between the Armstrongs and X’s trio continue, after X’s interference in the tag team match at Engel Stadium two weeks ago backfired when Bob saved the day. Who will walk out of “Music City” the victor? • In a tag team grudge match, The Tolos Brothers will take on The Uptown Boys! The Canadian brothers are looking forward to their rematch for the World Tag Team titles next week in Lexington but they cannot look past Marty Jannetty and Ric McCord, who defeated them in short fashion in February in Memphis. The Uptown Boys would love another win over the Toloses as payback for the brothers injuring Jannetty’s original partner Tommy Rogers back in December at the Mid-South Coliseum. Each team holds a victory over the other. Who will win this “rubber match”? • The Patriot begins his path toward another World title shot at Independence Day Bash. He will take on First Family of Wrestling member and three-time former Mid-America Heavyweight champion Ray “The Crippler” Stevens. These two ring greats met back in December at the Louisville Gardens in a great 20-minute match that saw Stevens win with a hook of the tights. What will be the outcome this time? • “Superstar” Bill Dundee continues his battles with Jim Cornette’s crew when he faces two-time former Southern Heavyweight champion “Exotic” Adrian Street! There was already a great deal of animosity between these two and now with the injury to Dundee’s partner “Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant, more fuel has been added to the fire! Dundee has been close to a victory over the British glam rocker in each one of their matches but the involvement of Jim Cornette and/or Mr. Hughes has been the determining factor! Can the Aussie finally beat the “Exotic One”? • The main event will be a first-time meeting for the USWA World Heavyweight championship. Current and two-time champion Harley Race will defend against two-time former Southern Heavyweight champion “Classy” Freddie Blassie! Blassie has an impressive win-loss record in his USWA tenure but has yet to win the World title. Race has built up his own great record and has only suffered one decisive loss. While both wrestlers are capable of good, technical wrestling, both are not afraid to take whatever advantage they can get to win. Will “The King of Men” win the World title or will Race continue to dominate?
All these bouts, plus “Wildfire” Tommy Rich, “The Monday Night Messiah” Tyler Black, The Heavenly Bodies, “The Fabulous” Jackie Fargo, and the USWA debut of Dutch Savage!
