Card #547: Nashville Fairgrounds
1) Former PNW Heavyweight champion Dutch Savage made a big impact in his debut with a pinfall on Jim Powers in the opener. Powers looked like he might ruin Savage’s debut, as he had the initial advantage and scored a near fall with a dropkick. Savage battled back and hit a belly-to-back suplex on Powers. Savage caught Powers in a backslide for a near fall and continued his onslaught. He used one of his patented weapons—a taped thumb to the throat to stun Powers. As the New Yorker stumbled around, Savage caught him with a boot to the midsection and then hit his famed running piledriver to score the pinfall in six minutes. As Savage got his hand raised, Jerry Calhoun noticed that Powers was not moving. He had Gary Michael Cappetta called to the back for help. EMTs came out with a stretcher. Powers’ former tag team partner S.D. Jones came down to check on him as well, as Powers was stretchered out of the Nashville Fairgrounds. *½
2) “The Fabulous” Jackie Fargo continued his winning ways with a pinfall on Nacho Barrera in four minutes. The Mexican grappler went after Fargo at the bell aggressively but Fargo fought back with some big punches and forearms. He hit the atomic drop and scored the pinfall. Naturally, Fargo followed up victory with a Fabulous Fargo Strut! ¼*
3) The Heavenly Bodies made short work of Hillbilly Jim and Cousin Luke. The former World Tag Team champions cut the ring in half on Luke and kept him in the entire match, tagging in and out. Chris Candido hit a diving head butt on Luke for near fall. Dr. Tom Prichard tagged back in and hit the enzuigiri to score the pinfall, while Candido stopped Jim from a save. Jim Cornette was very pleased with his men’s quick win! DUD
4) “The Monday Night Messiah” Tyler Black got a hard-fought win over S.D. Jones. Black could have possibly won the match quicker but seemed intent on showcasing his abilities and bragging to the Nashville fans that he was going to win the Southern Heavyweight championship from Bryan Danielson in two weeks in Tuscaloosa. “Special Delivery” kicked out of a flying forearm smash in the corner, as well as God’s Last Gift. Jones rallied back and had Black in trouble a few times. “Philadelphia’s Favorite Son” knocked Black out of the ring after a Philly Shuffle and K.O. punch. Luke Harper momentarily distracted Jones, which allowed Black to snap his neck on the top rope, return to the ring, and regain control. Black continued the attack and went out to the apron. He springboarded off the top rope with a diving knee strike to put Jones down for the pin. Black is now 8-0 in 2018 and could win his first USWA championship two weeks from now! ***
5) “Wildfire” Tommy Rich picked up another victory, this week over The Amish RoadKill. RoadKill was accompanied by his tag team partner and the new Mid-America Heavyweight champion “Dastardly” Danny Doring. Doring seemed more interested in looking at his title belt than cheering on his partner. “The Angry Amish Warrior” took control at the bell with an eye rake. He went for the Barn Burner but Rich dropped behind him and got him in a near fall with a rolling reverse cradle. Rich stayed in control, whipped RoadKill into the ropes, and caught him on the rebound with the sleeper. RoadKill dropped to the mat. Frank Morrell checked his arm and it dropped three times, so Rich got the submission win in his home area in about 70 seconds! DUD
6) Doctor X picked up a controversial win over “Bullet” Bob Armstrong in about six minutes. The action was wild at the start, with both men duking it out. X gained the upper hand and knocked Armstrong down with some forearm smashes. He made a cover but “Bullet” Bob kicked out. X went into the side of his boot and pulled out an object. He loaded his mask and delivered a big head butt! Armstrong dropped to the mat and X followed up with a flying knee drop to the head. He pulled Armstrong off the mat and locked on a full nelson. Armstrong was out and couldn’t respond, so Paul Neighbors checked his arm. It dropped three times, so Neighbors called for the bell and awarded the match to X via submission. The fans booed this outcome! Suddenly, the World Tag Team champions Brad and Brian Armstrong came into the ring, each with a chair in hand. Both men leveled the masked man with chair shots to the face! They did a few more shots and then “The Road Dogg” started to tear into X’s mask! USWA officials sprinted to the ring and pulled off an incensed Brian. Bob had come to by this point and he and Brad talked him off as well. The Armstrongs returned to the locker room. The officials helped X to the back. (Mad Dog Vachon and Baron Von Raschke were not present in Nashville, since they were not booked to wrestle on this card.) **
7) The Uptown Boys picked up another huge win over John and Chris Tolos in 18 minutes. The Toloses double teamed Marty Jannetty for the first few minutes of the match. Jannetty made the hot tag to Ric McCord, who executed a side saddle suplex on John for a near fall. The Uptown Boys worked over John until he tagged back to Chris. The fan favorites continued their attack, with Jannetty tagging in McCord and then lifting Chris up in a vertical suplex. McCord came off the top with the flying body press on Chris as he hung upside down! McCord went for a cover but John made a save. Chris managed to tag John a few moments later but the Uptown Boys worked him over as well. Jannetty hit the Rocker Dropper and went for the pin but Chris saved his brother. John recovered and slammed McCord, then followed up with a standing knee drop for a two-count. He tagged back to Chris, who pummeled McCord and then nailed him with running stomps in the corner. Chris went for another stomp but McCord rolled out of the way and Chris hit the buckle. McCord tagged Jannetty, who leapt over the top rope and immediately hit another Rocker Dropper. He covered Chris and score the pin, while McCord stopped an intervening John with a dropkick. The Nashville fans went wild for the Uptown Boys’ big win! ***¼
8) The Patriot earned an impressive win over Ray “The Crippler” Stevens. The masked American had the initial control, hitting a power slam for a two-count. The crafty Stevens took control and used both the Bombs Away and the piledriver but couldn’t get the pin after either. The three-time former Mid-America champion Stevens tossed the Patriot out of the ring. The Patriot climbed back up on the ring apron and Stevens went to attack him but the Patriot nailed him with a shoulder to the midsection and then rammed Stevens’ head into the top turnbuckle. The Patriot reentered the ring and took over. He hit a Patriot Missile about a minute later and scored the pinfall in about five minutes. As Frank Morrell raised the former World champion’s arm in victory, the Patriot signaled to Jimmy Hart that he looks forward to battling Stevens’ partner Greg “The Hammer” Valentine next week in Lexington! *½
9) “Exotic” Adrian Street picked up another controversial win over “Superstar” Bill Dundee, this time via countout in six minutes. The action was back and forth in the first couple of minutes. Street blocked an attack by the Aussie, lifted him across his shoulders, and hit a throat drop across the top rope out of a fireman’s carry. He made a cover but Dundee kicked out. Street caught Dundee with the crucifix but Dundee again kicked out. Street attacked Dundee’s leg, as he did to Dundee’s partner “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant a few weeks ago in Chattanooga. Street went for the London Bridge Leglock but with the “Music City” fans behind him, Dundee made the ropes. Dundee rolled out of the ring for a breather. Jim Cornette distracted Paul Neighbors, while his bodyguard Mr. Hughes went around the ring. Street came out of the ring and whipped Dundee into Hughes, who caught the “Superstar” and hit the spike slam on the arena floor! Hughes returned to Cornette, while the “Exotic One” returned to the ring. Neighbors turned his attention to Dundee on the floor and counted him out of the ring! After the bell, “Wildfire” Tommy Rich came down to check on Dundee. Street, Hughes, and Cornette wisely retreated rather than dealing with a fired-up Rich! *½
10) The main event was a first-time meeting between two top stars for the top prize in the USWA, as current and two-time USWA World Heavyweight champion Harley Race put the title on the line against two-time former Southern Heavyweight champion “Classy” Freddie Blassie. The challenger was a house of fire at the bell, brutalizing Race. The Nashville fans backed Blassie tonight, perhaps wanting to see a new champion crowned in the Nashville Fairgrounds. Blassie went right to work on Race in the opening minutes by biting his forehead multiple times and then dropping several knees to the head. He hit the Southern neckbreaker and the fans popped big, seeing “The King of Men” hit his finisher on the World champ. He covered Race but “The Mouth of The South” Jimmy Hart jumped up on the ring apron to distract Jerry Calhoun. The distraction allowed Race to take over for a few minutes but “The Vampire” battled back and bit Race again, this time drawing blood. The blood started to flow profusely and Calhoun would check the champion’s cut and condition several times to ensure he could continue. Blassie bite the bloodied champion yet again and drove him down to the mat on his back. Blassie went for a cover near the ropes. With Calhoun focusing on the champion’s shoulders, he missed seeing Hart reach in and slap Blassie across the face! An irate Blassie went after Hart outside the ring, almost getting counted out! Blassie noticed Calhoun’s count and returned to the ring but Race had recovered and cut him off with a knee smash. Blassie reversed a whip into the ropes but telegraphed a back body drop and Race executed a sunset flip for a near fall. Race stayed in control and hit the piledriver but Blassie kicked out. Race went for the vertical suplex and made another cover but Blassie managed to get a foot on the bottom rope for a break. Race worked on the challenger’s leg, trying to earn a submission with an Indian Deathlock but “The Hollywood Fashion Plate” made the ropes. Race went up to the top rope and came off with the diving head butt but Blassie rolled out of the way and Race crashed hard. Due to the crash and the blood loss, Race was very dazed and in trouble. Blassie went to work on him again. After about 20 minutes of action, Blassie’s allies the Tolos Brothers appeared in the aisleway. They kept their distance as the match continued. The World champion regained control and sent Blassie into the turnbuckles. “Classy” Freddie reversed the whip and sent Race crashing hard into the buckles, sending him upside down and over the ropes to the floor! With the champion on the floor, the Toloses immediately jumped on the champion and attacked him on the floor, right in front of Calhoun. The official was left with no choice but to call for the bell after 22 minutes and disqualify the challenger. Race retained the World title in a very dubious fashion! The “Music City” fans were not happy with this result and Blassie seemed surprised by the Toloses’ actions at that point in the match since he had control. Hart was ecstatic that his charge was still the World champion! ****¼
