I saw this elsewhere, but I love the idea of repackaging him as..
Eric Generic!

Switch, the Mexicools came in the midst of the Chris Benoit murders which captured media attention like nothin else in recent wrestling history, yet they drew no attention. The mainstream sees wrestling as a stereotype filled mess that can't be taken too seriously - even when it does broach taboo subjects like race - because it's wrestling.
Either way, El Generico donning a mask would draw near zero complaint because most people within the WWE Universe have likely never heard of him and summarily would have no idea that he wasn't hispanic. Also, with the number of masked wrestlers aping Japanese and Mexican styles, it would just seem commonplace. My two cents.

The Mexicools were actually two years before the Chris Benoit incident as they debuted in June of 2005 and the Benoit murders suicide were in June of 2007.
But regardless I always expected the WWE to change El Generico's name since they often change the names of Indy wrestlers they sign anyway such as Colt Cabana, Claudio Castagnoli, Bryan Danielson, Tyler Black, Jon Moxley, Brent Albright, Chris Hero, PAC, Davina Rose, etc.
But I was still sort of hoping the WWE would keep him in a mask.

Switch, the Mexicools came in the midst of the Chris Benoit murders. Nope. They debuted after the first ECW One Night Stand. The Mexicools made their debut as villains on June 23, 2005, when all three members rode to the ring on a John Deere lawn mower, with the sticker saying the more Hispanic sounding name Juan Deere,[3] and wearing matching coveralls.[4] They attacked both Chavo Guerrero and Paul London during a WWE Cruiserweight Championship match.[4] The Benoit ordeal was 2007. Two years to the day almost. Psicosis and Juvi were fired LONG before 2007. The Mexicools were actually two years before the Chris Benoit incident as they debuted in June of 2005 and the Benoit murders suicide were in June of 2007. Someone else remembers!

Chewey, I doubt that. Unless it involves lampooning a political high roller or makes light of a national tragedy, most media - even the socially motivated fringe media - ignores wrestling. I don't recall the Mexicools generating a single peep from the media, and they were outright Latino stereotypes. And that's one of any number of far more obvious examples. While your point is well taken, eight years is a very large gap of time. It is a different world today. I don't think TMZ or Huffington Post had much coverage, Facebook required you to have a college address to sign up, wikipedia was brand new, and I hadn't even heard of twitter. Plus WWE wasn't G rated, Linda McMahon hadn't taken an interest in politics yet, and Chavo was playing his intentionally racist Kerwin White character. We are all old enough that time flies by quickly now but yeah, Switch makes a very good point that they could have put EG in a different mask and tweaked his character.

It could be worse. Actually, it's not bad. If he ever comes back to the indies, he can go back to being EG.
