Card 6 - Great Lakes Pro Wrestling @ Hershey Centre, Mississauga, Ontario “Crowning of a Champion Part 1”
Block B Match – Fire Ant v. Ultramantis Black
Both these competitors struggled in the tournament and now sit tied for last in the block. This one was for pride. This one was very evenly contested until Black struck with a head butt between the eyes and took over on offense. There is a great spot where Ant manages to backdrop Black to the floor in the corner turning the momentum of the bout. We get some brawling on the floor and Black is again in control until he runs into Ant’s elbow in the corner. A pair of deathjumps set up a BEACH BREAK. Ant gets a 2 ½ count (R4/P3). Ant tosses Black to the floor and when he crawls back in nails him with another BEACH BREAK for a 1 count (R9/P4). A third BEACH BREAK gets another 2 ½ count (R6/P5). Ant attacks with a deathjump clothesline and then goes for a figure four leglock (ch) but Black is able to counter. A headbutt between the eyes looks vicious and leads to a PRAYING MANTIS BOMB. 1, 2, kick out (R7/P6). It is all Black now as he unleashes everything on Ant over the next few minutes. Ant counters a deathjump with a boot to the face and both men are down on the mat. Ant is up first. BEACH BREAK. 1, 2, kick out (R10/P7). The fans cannot believe it. A jumping kick sets up a burning hammer and Black falls to the floor. He crawls back under the ropes and Ant connects with yet another BEACH BREAK. 1, 2, ½ count (R10/P8). Ant cannot believe it. He mounts the corner but somehow Black is able to knock the ropes and Ant crashes to the mat. Both men are spent and spend the next few minutes trying to exchange low impact holds and counters. Ant rebounds Black off the ropes and both men go for a clothesline and crash together in the middle of the ring. Ant is off the mat just second before the 10 count. BEACH BREAK. 1, 2, 3 (R6/P9). What an opening contest.
Block A Match – Mike Quackenbush v. Ophidian
The fans are behind Quackenbush as he makes his way to the ring. It is not often that Quackenbush has the size advantage in his matches. Ophidian scores early on with a corner back flip kick and then moves to a series of Death Grips on the mat. The holds take their toll and Quackenbush submits after four of them (R6/P6). Huge upset win for Ophidian to close out the tournament.
Tag Team Block Match: Incoherence (Frightmare & Hallowicked) v. The Colony (Soldier Ant & Green Ant)
The Colony has struggled in the tournament and are still looking for their first win. Hallowicked looks impressive early on and gets a two count on Green Ant with a deathjump cross body block (R6/P2). The momentum turns and the Colony gets control. Green Ant tries to get the submission on Frightmare with a CLOVERLEAF but Frightmare gets out (R4/P2). Hallowicked leads Incoherence back and gets a near fall with a GRAVEYARD SMASH on Green Ant (R8/P3). Incoherence with HEADLESS HORSEMAN but Soldier Ant makes the save. KNEECOLEPSY by Frightmare on Green Ant but Soldier Ant again saves his partner. Ant continues to struggle and Frightmare hits a FRIGHT CRUSHER for the three count (R3/P6). The Colony ends the tournament winless.
Block A Match: El Generico v. Sara Del Rey
Generico comes into this one out of contention but looking for his third win in a row. Generico looks good early on but Del Rey counters a backdrop with a piledriver and then gets a near fall with a release German suplex (R6/P2). Del Rey takes the fight to the floor and runs Generico into the ring rails and earns a disqualification. The fans are not pleased but Generico comes out of the tournament a top contender.
Block B: Bryan Danielson v. Eddie Kingston (inj)
Handshakes gets things going and the fans show their appreciation. Reports are that Kingston’s shoulder is not 100% after being attacked last card by the Order of the Neo Solar Temple. Both men trade moves with an advantage. Danielson strings together some offensive moves and locks in a TRIANGLE CHOKE. Kingston gets out (R8/P2). Danielson connect with a deatjump smash and goes back to the TRIANGLE CHOKE but again Kingston counters (R8/P3). Danielson is on Kingston with another TRIANGLE CHOKE but Kingston gets a foot in the ropes for the break (R5/P4). CATTLE MUTILATION but Kingston hangs on (R8/P5). A second CATTLE MUTILATION and the fans are on their feet! Kingston gets to the ropes (R10/P5). Danielson is clearly frustrated and takes the action to the floor. Kingston wins an exchange of blows outside and then tries to end it with a BACKFIST TO THE FUTURE. Danielson kicks out (R11/P3). Kingston chokes out Danielson with his boot but the American Dragon makes a comeback with a Yakuza Kick that slips Kingston to the floor. Dive to the outside by Danielson! Back inside, Kingston turns Danielson inside out with a lariat out of nowhere. 1, 2, kick out (R8/P3). It is back and forth as both men exchange low level offensive moves. Kingston scores with a full nelson suplex for a 1 count (R7/P4). A Thesz Press and punches sets up a SLIDING D. Danielson kicks out of the cover (R9/P6). Things break down on the floor and Kingston eats the ring post. Kingston then wins a brawl when the action goes back to the floor. In in the ring, Kingston hits a SLIDING D. 1, 2, 3 (R6/P7). Kingston overcomes his injury moves into the lead in Block B with is fourth straight win. A handshake ends the contest and the fans are on their feet for both men.
Tag Team Block Match – Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield & Sugar Dunkerton) v. Team FIST (Chuck Taylor & Johnny Gargano)
The fans are happy to see the Throwbacks and are in the mood for some laughs after the heavy action of the previous bout. FIST has won two and a row and a third will all but guarantee an immediate shot at the tag team titles. They come out strong with some solid double teaming. A slingshot spear by Gargano on Dunkerton nearly ends it (R5/P4). Hatfield gets the hot tag and goes after Taylor including an Underhand Pitch that gets a 1 count (R8/P2). Gargano is able to get the defensive tag into the match and takes over against Hatfield including a choke slam (ch) and a HURTS DONUT for a 1 count (R10/P3). Taylor tags in and takes out Hatfield with an OMEGA DRIVER. Dunkerton hits the ring starting a wild brawl but FIST maintains control. The Throwbacks are able to make as series of Lucha tags but cannot get anything going. FIST hits Dunkerton with back to back Assisted Ace Crushers but cannot get the pin (R9/P5). Taylor takes it Hatfield and connects with a jumping big boot for a 1 count (R8/P5). FIST keeps Hatfield cut off from Dunkerton. Gargano comes off the top with a deathjump cross body block for the three count (R5/P6) while Taylor blocks Dunkerton from making the save.
Block B Match – Jigsaw v. Brodie Lee
If Jigsaw wins the match he ends up first in Block B and will compete the Great Lakes title next card. Jigsaw looks very small in the ring with Lee. There is a great looking spot early on where Lee counters a wheelbarrow slam with a Black Hole Slam. Lee connect with a BIG BOOT but Jigsaw is not ready to go down yet (R6/P3). Brodie follows with a Brodie Bomb for a 2 count (R6/P4). A package piledriver crumples Jigsaw to the mat and he rolls to the floor. Outside, Jigsaw goes blow for blow with Lee but Lee gets the upper hand. Back in the ring, BIG BOOT. Jigsaw kicks out at 2 and the fans love it (R8/P5). BIG BOOT and again Jigsaw kicks out (R10/P6). Lee is frustrated and tosses Jigsaw to the floor. Superkick at ringside and Jigsaw can barely crawl back into the ring (R10/P7). Lee mounts the corner and leaps. No one is home! Lee crashes to the mat. Jigsaw hooks the leg. 1, 2, shoulder up (R6/P4). Suddenly we have a match. Jigsaw is able to avoid Lee’s power and gets some offensive in of his own. There is a great exchange of Superkicks that Jigsaw wins. Outside, Lee eats the rails. Jigsaw dives onto Lee on the floor and Lee is nearly counted out (R7/P5). Back in the ring, Jigsaw completes the comeback with JIG ‘N’ TONIC to win Block B (R7/P8). The fans explode.
Block A Match - Claudio Castagnoli v. Icarus
Castagnoli needs to win this one to advance to the tournament final next card against Jigsaw. Icarus wastes no time and gets the advantage from the opening bell forcing Castagnoli to the floor with forearm smashes. Castagnoli regains the ring and Icarus hits a BLU-RAY for a 1 count (R7/P3). Icarus follows with WINGS OF ICARUS but Castagnoli escapes (R7/P3). A deathjump smash leads to a second WINGS OF ICARUS and Castagnoli has no counter (R4/P4). Block A ends with a four way tie on top and Ophidian wins the Block by virtue of his better record against the other three competitors.
Tag Team Block Match – Tursas (inj) & Ares v. Delirious & Dazee Haze
The winning team wins the tournament and will be the first Great Lakes Tag Team Champions. Tursas looks simply massif in the ring against Haze but Haze is able to duck a clothesline and stun Tursas with a heart punch. Delirious is in and unleashes a fast paced assault on the big European. A deathjump cross body block gets a one count (R6/P1). Haze is back in and dives onto Tursas on the floor earning a solid pop from the fans. The action goes back and forth at this point until Ares is able to cut off Haze from her partner. Tursas overpowers Haze but she manages to reverse a whip into the corner and connect with a running slingshot. Delirious is in with a PRAYING MANTIS BOMB on Tursas that has to been seen to be believed. 1 count (R7/P4). Another PRAYING MANTIS BOMB has the fans roaring. 1, 2, 3 (R4/P5). Ares is stunned on the apron and the fans are on their feet. Delirious & Haze are the first Tag Team Champions!
If you had told me when I started Great Lakes that Delirious & Dazee Haze would win the Tag Team Title tournament and that Ophidian would be battling Jigsaw in the singles finals I would have never believed you.
