I've wanted to bring Roddy Piper into my Friday Night fights boxing game, but I can't find any information on his boxing history, fighting style, etc. although he's claimed to be a Golden Gloves champion, I can't find any record of him winning any GG championships and don't see either his ring name or real name listed under a list of champions. Was the GG Champ just a claim for the character or did he actually box? If someone can shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it. All I have is his WM 2 match with Mr. T, which seemed to me like he was copying boxers on TV and had no legit skill. Can anyone help with this? Thanks.

I doubt it's legit. He started wrestling at 16. He wouldn't have time to train as a boxer let alone a GG level one.

Piper's claim to be a Golden Gloves Champion is complete and utter BS.

Thanks. I figured that after watching his WM 'match' but still wasn't sure.

All I have is his WM 2 match with Mr. T, which seemed to me like he was copying boxers on TV and had no legit skill. Can anyone help with this? Thanks. Early in his career, Roddy worked an NWA territory in California that was ran by the LeBell brothers. During this time he trained at Judo Gene's academy. In additional to the pro wrestling stuff he picked up legit grappling and fundamentally sound boxing skill. Gene was very respected in both realms, and even served as a boxing judge in CA for many years. He has labeled Piper a Black Belt in his system, which is fairly high praise. So he wasn't Golden Gloves level, but he wasn't a slouch either. In prep for the Wrestlemania 2 boxing match with Mr. T, he did a mini-camp with Lou Duva's people to get his wind up and look competent over the course of the scheduled time. If you watch the first round, Piper fills the lion's share of the action with a decent jab and some nice worked combos. The match then became more theatrical, but he wasn't too bad for a guy arm punching and trying not to hurt his opponent. If he had thrown with real intent... Thanks for the info. I'm still shocked that Piper has legit training in Judo and boxing considering his in-ring moveset petty much includes punch, kick body slam, sleeper. Also, I still feel like in his WM match, Piper looked like he was just copying boxing moves on TV.
