uproxx.com/prowrestling/2015/05/bob-backlund-interrupted-verne-gagnes-funeral-with-a-heel-promo-during-the-eulogy/Late last month, legendary pro wrestling promoter Verne Gagne passed away at the age of 89. He was one of the most influential men in the history of the sport, running the Minnesota-based American Wrestling Association for 31 years and introducing the country to future WWE stars like Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels and Scott Hall. Gagne was laid to rest on Tuesday in Eden Prairie, MN. Eulogies were given by Mean Gene Okerlund and Verne’s son, Greg. That’s where things get weird. According to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, things started off well. Okerlund’s eulogy ended with an interview introduction for “the heavyweight champion of the world, Verne Gagne,” and earned a standing ovation. Greg’s eulogy didn’t go as well thanks to an interruption from one of the funeral guests — former WWF Champion and legitimate crazy person Bob Backlund. From the report: “The lone negative thing is that Backlund started yelling out what was described as a heel promo at Greg Gagne while Greg was delivering the eulogy that was described as ridiculously out of place.” It takes a special kind of insane wrestler to start cutting heel promos on a guy while he’s delivering a eulogy for his father. There obviously isn’t video of this (thank God), but we imagine it was a lot like this, only sadder and more confusing:

Outstanding. To Backlund kayfabe is not dead, even if Verne is. And I bet Verne would have loved it happening at his funeral. Greatest show of respect to the old man.

Bob Backlund is the best. I bet Vern would have loved it too. Backlund always was a crazy cat. Lol. I wonder how many wrestlers in the crowd were laughing on the inside.

[/quote I'm not sure about that. Mick Karch, former AWA announcer and friend of the family, implied the family weren't too happy with it.

Poor family probably wasn't in on it. Bad timing for sure. Curious to see if there is backlash on Bob in the future. He's getting up there too right? I imagine he's been dropped on his head a bunch, maybe he's Looney tunes for real now. And thinking about it, there was no money in it, Vern probably would have been less than thrilled.I take it back.

Regardless if Verne would have liked it. Funerals aren't for the dead they are for the living to deal with the passing of a loved one. It was very disrespectful for Backlund to ruin the time of morning for the Gagne family.

Uh no, it was actually the opposite of that. Disrupting Verne's funeral with that nonsense is pretty much the biggest show of disrespect Backlund could've shown for the Gagne family.
