The history of the Superstar Pro Wrestling Game, as I know it...
1983 - all 35 of the wrestlers that Aceldamas named, plus a second set of 35 wrestlers and 5 bonus cards. Printed on full sheets of paper. 1984 #1 - Another 35 cards, plus 5 more bonus cards, still wrestlers under their real names. 1984 #2 - AWA edition - least known of the sets, sold only (to my knowledge) in Verne Gagne's Pro Wrestling Report, which was the AWA house show program. Last set to be printed on full sheets of paper. 1984 #3 - the "Deluxe Edition" - First edition to be printed on half pages of cardstock. At this point, the game was starting to feel the heat from the WWF, so all of the WWF guys were listed as "Masked Wrestler #1 - #23". This was done alphabetically, so Adrian Adonis was "Masked Wrestler #1" and Nikolai Volkoff was "Masked Wrestler "#23". The cards included were reprints of stats from the prior sets, so their were no new wrestlers in this set, to my knowledge. I have heard some people (maybe Tim Dalton was one of them) say that their versions of this set didn't have the "Masked Wrestler" gimmick, but still had printed names on it, even for the WWF guys. This was the first SPW set I ever bought, so I am very certain that the set I had included the "Masked Wrestlers". 1985 #1 - Superset '85 - Due to copyright issues, all of the wrestlers in this set had goofy parodies of their names. For example, Jerry Brisco was "Jersey Brisco" and Chris Adams was "The Superkick". There were 30 wrestlers and 5 bonus cards in this one. 1985 #2 - Promoter's Dream Edition - 60 cards. This was the first set where the names of the wrestlers were left blank so you could pencil them in. Some were pretty obvious, a few not so much. Some you knew who they were even though the moveset didn't make sense. The stats for the repeated wrestlers from earlier editions are different in this set. For example, Ric Flair in the 1983 and Deluxe Edition have pretty much the same stats. The Ric Flair in the Promoter's Dream set is substantially different. 1986 - Superset '86 - 25 wrestler cards, plus 5 manager cards are introduced. The Strategy Pin Chart was introduced in this set, which Stu Lowry adapted for COTG/LOW. 1987 - Superset '87 - 25 wrestler cards, plus 5 women's wrestler cards are introduced. Lots of printing errors on this one. The even numbered cards say "Superset '86" on them, while some cards have their "Sub" and "Tag Team" ranges reversed. 1988 - NWA Edition - Only set with full page sheets of cardstock, plus a wrestler picture on them. 18 wrestler cards from the height of the 1988 Great American Bash series.
It's interesting that a game with such a rabid following doesn't have a wiki page. There is an online community where you can find scans of some of the cards and the basic rules. There was a sim about 10 years ago that did a pretty good job of creating an online version. I'm not sure if that's been updated to evolve with technology.
There is a guy online who sells a knockoff game. This is not the version of SPW that most people know and love. I would steer clear.

It was in this game I met a fellow named Don Gonce, who would later form IRON from the Rampage Wrestling Game. I played it for years. Even had the COTG, but never played that early on due to my love for superstar. Then Came Rampage and then COTG. There is a yahoo group

Must have been a later printing.

Very nice recap Chad. Think that pretty much covers it.
I played the computer version for a while, and had fun with it, but haven't played it in a while (when I changed computers, I didn't save it...hindsight being twenty-twenty, kinda wish I did!). Think it is still available, and can be found through the Yahoo group.
A sometimes quirky game, but a lot of fun nevertheless! And to be fair, it did a pretty good job of simulating pro wrestling, certainly in its day.

My Deluxe Edition didn't have the "Masked Wrestler" thing. At one point I think I owned every set except the AWA edition, which I was completely unaware of until Chad told me about it. Fun game to play. I recall Rick Martel and the Road Warriors had really long title runs for me.
Like Chad noted, I'm very surprised they don't have a wiki page since this was pretty much THE tabletop wrestling game until COTG came out.
When I did my bootleg WWWF '77 set, I also did a bunch of the cards in SPW format too, just for some fun nostalgia.

I have the game, two sets (incomplete and written on) and a ton of homemade wrestlers.
