I've been looking into these games and from the sounds of things the Baseball one is really easy to pick up and play.
While I've never been a huge baseball fan I would consider getting it eventually. My question here is this: Has anyone tried or know anyone who has tried the Hockey one? I'm a huge NHL fan and the appeal for the Hockey one is really pulling at me. I'm here looking for advice and reviews from people who have played their game system.

I remember playing Strat-O-Matic Hockey back in the 90s was alot of fun, can play solo also, games go fast if I remember correctly, not sure how much game has been revised since I lasted played, gonna look into newer additions myself. I grew up on Cadaco All-Star Baseball running seasons with my father and friends, then APBA Baseball which I liked more then Strat-O-Matic one, too bad they were not big hockey fans like me.

Played the hockey game and similar to basketball I found it a bit cumbersome. To me the strat games really lend themselves to the stop action sports ala baseball and football as opposed to basketball and hockey.

Been playing statomatic it seems forever. Never played hockey, it's not my sport. You can go to the strat fan forum and ask some questions. I think you have to join the board to post.

Strat-o-matic is the best sports game system around IMO.
Tom is a big fan, and I believe that he was influenced by the game- so it is easy to pick up for COTGers.
I haven't played hockey in years. I never played on a long-term basis, but thought that it was fun.

I play daily. It is the best as others have said. Football is the best strategic two player game they have. Baseball is the best solitaire. Definitely give them a try.

I still play apba baseball my opinion the better than strat-o-matic. years ago I played apba hockey it was fun. much to the chagrin of my wife she says to much low and apba. baseball.

Big Jim - I have not seen the master game rules or new game boards but to me APBA's biggest weakness was the pitchers. Grade a pitchers were not as dominant as I thought they should be. |

Hockey is better to get as the PC game. The board version is really fun and accurate but it takes awhile to play. It's a real emotional roller coaster game. When a guy gets a one on one with the goalie or a big rebound shot it can be quite tense. But if you do the PC version the line changes and all of that will be done for you. It makes your life a lot easier.

I cut my tabletop gaming teeth (so to speak) on Strat-O-Matic games back in the 1980's. I played the baseball, football and basketball games, and I enjoyed all of them. My only issue was that the basketball game had no player fatigue factor, so why not play Larry Bird the full 48 minutes? I did the best I could, rotating players in and out to resemble a real NBA game.
About a dozen or so years ago, I came across the APBA 2000 Premiere Edition baseball game on a discount table at Barnes & Noble. The game comes in a deluxe box and includes all teams from the 1999 season (20 cards per team). This special edition of APBA baseball retailed for 60 dollars and still sells on Amazon for around 30 dollars. I paid five bucks for it at B&N!
Compared to Strat, the game cards and other materials were much higher quality. But I found the game lacking in two important respects: (1) no lefty/righty differentials and (2) no pitcher fatigue factor. So why would you ever give Pedro Martinez the hook? I believe the game has now addressed these shortcomings, but Strat was way ahead of it.
I was cleaning out some closets recently and I came upon this game, which I haven't touched in years and years and years. I plan on replaying the 1999 post-season. With any luck from the dice, my beloved Red Sox will triumph in the World Series, which they never reached back in '99.
