Dave Semenko, the former NHL tough guy who served as Wayne Gretzky's bodyguard and once went three rounds with boxing legend Muhammad Ali, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 59. The Edmonton Oilers confirmed Semenko's death in a statement Thursday. "Dave will be remembered as a fierce competitor, loyal teammate, fan favourite and dear friend to so many," the team said. "His legendary toughness on the ice is surpassed only by his kindness and caring for others, and his equally legendary wit and sense of humour." Semenko, a Winnipeg native, joined the Oilers for the 1977-78 World Hockey Association season and played in Edmonton until he was traded to Hartford on Dec. 12, 1986. Over that time he amassed 1,279 penalty minutes over 596 WHA and NHL games while opening up the ice for Gretzky and the Oilers' skilled forwards. He helped Edmonton win its first two Stanley Cups in 1984 and 1985. While not a prolific goal-scorer — he had 81 over his pro career in a career playing on some of the most potent offensive teams in professional hockey — Semenko did score the last ever goal in WHA history before the league merged with the NHL. A feared pugilist on the ice, Semenko also fought Ali in an exhibition bout in Edmonton on June 12, 1983. The three-round match was judged a draw, though The Associated Press's report on the fight said Ali, a three-time world heavyweight champion, mostly toyed with Semenko.

Mitchell Henry has lost his brave battle with leukemia. According to Western Kentucky's website, Henry, who was a member of the Green Bay Packers in 2015, passed away from the disease. He was 24 years old. "It is with great sadness that we learned of Mitchell's passing this morning," Director of Athletics Todd Stewart said. "Mitchell was as committed to his teammates, his University, his friends and his family as anyone you will ever find, and we were so fortunate to have him as part of our Hilltopper family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his lovely wife Madison, and all of those who were blessed to have known Mitchell." Henry played college football for Western Kentucky and recorded 1,094 yards on 78 catches with 12 touchdowns in 47 games. Henry signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent. He was cut from the Packers before the regular season and then signed with the Denver Broncos where he played in two games. Henry was cut by the Broncos in October and signed with the Packers again where he would spend the rest of the year on the practice squad. In 2016, Henry signed with the Packers, but was cut from the team after injuring his finger during the preseason. This is what Henry's family posted on Facebook (via WBKO.com): Mitchell passed away with leukemia this morning at 3 am. We are so proud of Mitchell's fight with this terrible disease, proud of how he lived his life for the past 24 years, but most of all proud of his faith and acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. We are emotionally and physically exhausted. We ask respect for our privacy until we arrive back home. We will welcome calls and texts at that time. We love and appreciate each and everyone's support for Mitchell and all of his extended family over the last seven months. Please pray for all of our safe travels back home and the difficult days for our family that are still ahead. Love The Henry's

Actress Stevie Ryan has died in what the L.A. County Coroner’s Office has ruled a suicide by hanging. She was 33. The coroner’s office confirmed online that Ryan died on Saturday, July 1. They did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for additional comment. The actress first rose to fame through her YouTube series called Little Loca, and later transitioned to doing celebrity parodies on the video platform. “I remember waking up and one Little Loca video had like 900 hits and I was like ‘Oh, my gosh. There’s people watching this?’ ” Ryan told The Hollywood Reporter in 2012. “And it just kept going and then I did this Paris Hilton thing and then it literally was just growing and growing. And I just became so obsessed with all of it.” Ryan parlayed her impersonations into a pop culture sketch series on VH1 called Stevie TV from 2012-2013, and was later a co-host of Brody Jenner‘s E! series Sex with Brody. She was most recently the co-host of Mentally Ch(ill), a “podcast about depression,” according to its iTunes description. In an episode released just two days before Ryan’s death, she revealed that her grandfather died Thursday. “I’m just worried that this is going to send me into a deeper depression,” she explained. During the episode, Ryan and co-host Kristen Carney also discussed suicide. Carney tweeted on Monday, “RIP @stevieryan The coolest girl I’ve ever known.”

John Blackwell Jr. -- who toured with Prince as his drummer for over a decade -- died Tuesday. John's wife, Yaritza said he died peacefully in her company. She said, "Thanks God for his life and thanks everyone for their support." The cause of death is unknown but Blackwell battled a brain tumor last year after undergoing a battery of tests at a hospital in Japan. Yaritza setup a GoFundMe page last July ... and as of date it's raised over $78,000 to help cover medical expenses. Blackwell took up drums at 3 years old, inspired by his father who was himself an accomplished drummer. Blackwell toured with Patti LaBelle before he met Prince, and he also toured with Justin Timberlake on his FutureSex/LoveSounds album. John was 43.

GROTBAGS actress Carol Lee Scott has died aged 74. The actress – who played the iconic children’s TV character – was revealed to have passed by her niece Gina Mear, who paid her a heartwarming tribute on Twitter. The niece of the star confirmed the loss on Twitter Next to pictures of her and her family cuddled up in their home, Gina simply wrote: “My dear aunty Carl passed away yesterday, RIP Grotbags, I will miss you.” The actress died on July 3, but the cause of her death is not yet known. The character of Grotbags – a bright green witch known for her scattered clothing and witches robe and hat – became a much-loved TV character in the early nineties after originally appearing in Emu’s World on ITV. Carol’s ability to bring life and love into the character resulted in crossover appearances in The Pink Windmill Show, before being given her own series in 1991. The show lasted for three series before being cancelled, and showed the witch’s life in her castle among her faithful (yet silly) companions. Despite this, Carol would frequently reprise the role for pantomimes across the country, and became one a childhood icon for many in the process. It read: "It is very sad that I have to report that Carol Lee Scott has passed away today. "A larger than life lady with a much larger heart of comedy, kindness and generosity! "Carol was a great lover of music and comedy and one of the songs she used to like was 'Ain't It Grand To Be Blooming Well Dead' by Leslie Sarony and it was Carol's request that there be no sadness but music and laughter!" The concept of Grotbags - which Carol was so famous for - came about while she was performing in summer season in Cleethorpes with Rod Hull.
