Former Phillies and Yankees shortstop Ruben Amaro Sr., as well as the father of the ex-Phillies GM, has passed away at 81. Amaro played in the MLB from 1958 to 1969 as both a shortstop and a first baseman. His most notable season came in 1964, where he received MVP votes as he hit .264 with four home runs and 34 RBI, in addition to a Gold Glove award. Amaro was traded to the Yankees in 1966, but tore a ligament in his knee shortly after joining the team. He was never the same, and retired following the 1969 season. He then moved to the dugout, scouting and coaching first base for Philadelphia. While he wasn't an all-time great as a player, Amaro's impact will last for generations. He's the patriarch of one of baseball's well-known families, as Ruben Amaro Jr. was the GM for the Phillies from 2008 to 2015. Amaro Jr. is currently coaching first base for the Red Sox. One of Amaro Sr.'s other sons, Luis Amaro, played in the Phillies' minor league system and is currently the general manager of a team in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball team.
