I heard they finished 16 like normal in December, but when they came back from break they announced they were going to 18. 17 had been run during the break.
Can someone enlighten me as to what all this means?

In December they secretly did 9 shows that are being released on Chikaratopia 3 at a time, this is Season 17. There's some title changes, deaths & farewells to Heidi & Kimberlee.
So far only the 1st 3 are out. Next 3 get released in 2 weeks.

When is the next live show? It would make sense for them to let people see all of season 17 so you know what's going on.

Next shows are March 4 & 5. Season 17 shows 4,5 &6 get released an hour after the show on the 5th is over.
The final 3 probably won't be released until just before or after the Wrestlemania weekend shows

j and JimSteel have covered most of it. I will add that the episodes in season 17 are all named after Lost episodes, a series well known for the use of flashbacks. Season 17 is sort of a flash back season. Bits and pieces of what happened during the season keep getting revealed during season 18. The interesting part is that Chikara just acts like we all know what has happened, where we really dont (ie a team we think just made its debut actually just picked up their 3rd point, Max Smashmaster who we thought was at 0 also got his 3rd point...not to mention the title changes).
Very interested to see what else happens to get to our new champs. Plus see who may have a Golden opportunity, as the 3rd Infinite Guantlet is coming up in April despite us only having seen 1 before. I know for many its a bit confusing, but I think its pretty creative, and certainly continues to make my Chikaratopia subscription well worth the money.

I thought UltraMantis Black had retired due to injuries?

Certainly a unique way of doing things again, but some negatives to this idea too. No money from those season shows. Fans in the dark. Definitely something different.

I think they may have been forced into this situation by WWE signing Kimber Lee & Heidi Lovelace. Those two were huge parts of the last season and looked to be big pieces going forward until they signed.

Odd and unusual and a lot of fun, typical Chikara.
