They actually reaired that in HD (not like an upscale with the bars...like widescreen HD) a couple of years ago and I got a copy of the WPW Special it aired on because I hadn't seen it in a while and it absolutely does hold up.
Between that, the last IWGP Complete Box Blu Ray having a ton of 2003-2004 stuff in widescreen HD and NTV reairing widescreen HD versions of 2006/2007 NOAH Budokan stuff it makes me wonder just how much of the stuff from that era exists like that. It's probably the tape trader in me more than it is anything else but having the KENTA/Marufuji match from October 2006 in HD blows my mind. Hell, having Sano/Misawa from 2007 in HD blows my mind. I wish those companies would just start dropping Blu Ray sets with all of this shit because I'd buy all of 'em...and be broke for the rest of my life but hey if I get a 1080p copy of Nagata/Kensuke from 1/4/04 it's totally worth it

So...yeah. Okada/Tanahashi's gonna be your A Block final and I'm gonna guess Ibushi beats Omega to set up Ibushi/Okada as the final. Naito beats Omega on night 2 and gets the October title shot.

I figured that Ibushi vs Omega would be their block's final match. I like your calls @kernodle for the finals and for Naito beating Omega.

Ibushi/Okada final is a good guess and certainly one I'm fine with. I think I'm leaning Ibushi, believe it or not. I'm not sure I see Naito beating Kenny. If it was later in the tournament, yes, but at this point and coming off the title win and then beating Cody at the G1 Special... I don't know. Unless he suffers an "injury" on the Cow Palace card and that plays into it.
Of course, perhaps even more of note is the SANADA/Naito matchup after the teases and friction between the two of them the other night.
I'm super interested in seeing ZSJs journey through the G1. He faces off against all the guys he beat in the NJ Cup again plus Kenny Omega and Goto, but especially another match with Ishii! Should be some great stuff.
Also, chances Suzuki beats Tanahashi on night one? Curious to see what Suzuki and Elgin do too after their feud kind of fizzled out and resulted in some of Suzuki's worst, most over-booked matches of the past couple of years.
One last thing: If I started buying those blu-ray sets, my wife would slowly poison me, haha. They sound incredible though. I'm familiar with the IWGP ones, but not the NOAH ones. Very cool. Ahhh tape trading... Hard to believe it's been about 20 years since I got my first batch of tapes. AJPW Summer Action Series with one of the Misawa/Kawada bouts, best of Muta/Mutoh, & a best of barbed wire death matches. Good times.

Just popped into my head, so I'll follow up... Crazy as it sounds, I could see Tanahashi beating Okada in the block final, but then losing to Ibushi in the finals. This could set up an Okada/Tanahashi match at the dome and lead to Ibushi/Omega as well.
My co-host is convinced Naito is winning the G1 again and that Omega/Ibsuhi draw and Naito beats ZSJ to make the finals and then beat Okada.
I don't know. I do think it's Okada/Ibushi/Naito. I can't see anyone else winning this thing, but I just don't think Naito wins two in a row. I also don't like the idea of Naito/Okada main eventing the dome again, should Naito take the strap off Omega before 1/4. I just don't think it's the story Gedo's been telling this year, year and a half or so.
I don't know. Should be a very good tournament with a couple of truly great matches, though I don't see it being as good as last year's.

Honestly the only scenario I can see with Tanahashi in the final is if he won his block and then Naito won the B Block. I really think if Ibushi's going to the final it's Okada or nothing.

If it was later in the tournament, yes, but at this point and coming off the title win and then beating Cody at the G1 Special... I don't know. Unless he suffers an "injury" on the Cow Palace card and that plays into it. Okada lost to Marufuji on opening night in 2016 which was right after he won the belt back from Naito. Tanahashi lost to ZSJ on opening night last year which was right after the Billy Gunn IC Title defense. Now having said this...if Omega does beat Naito, that means he'd hold a tiebreaker over him for the final night and if that's the case then I would almost expect Ibushi to go over Kenny but for Naito to have the tiebreaker over Ibushi (or even a draw), giving Naito the pass to the final. I really think that match will make the picture of who's really winning the B Block a lot clearer.

Interestingly...that Suzuki/Ishii match isn't happening in Japan at all.

Full G1 Special card
NJPW "G1 SPECIAL IN SAN FRANCISCO", 07.07.2018 San Francisco Cow Palace, USA 1.) CHAOS of SHO, YOH, Rocky Romero, Gedo and YOSHI-HASHI vs. Bullet Club of Chase Owens, Yujiro Takahashi, Tanga Loa, Tama Tonga and King Haku 2.) Toru Yano and Tomohiro Ishii vs. Zack Sabre Jr. and Minoru Suzuki 3.) KUSHIDA and Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Marty Scurll and Hangman Page 4.) NEVER Openweight Championship: Hirooki Goto (ch) vs. Jeff Cobb 5.) IWGP Tag Team Championship: The Young Bucks of Nick and Matt Jackson (ch) vs. EVIL and SANADA 6.) Tetsuya Naito and BUSHI vs. Kazuchika Okada and Will Ospreay 7.) IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship: Hiromu Takahashi (ch) vs. Dragon Lee 8.) IWGP Heavyweight Championship: Kenny Omega (ch) vs. Cody
Overall it's not a super card or anything but the NEVER and Jr. Title matches should both be great and the Ishii/Suzuki lead in tag should be a lot of fun.
