Thanks very much for the comments and support Crimson and Pariah. That was a great top three, Pariah, on the IWA show. I meant to post this next ASW show over the weekend but didn't have a chance. I hope you enjoy this round of action from the television arm of LOW, All-Star Wrestling...
Card #1420 - LOW All-Star Wrestling - Episode 101
PWI Newswire with Bill Apter:
* BA: “Welcome wrestling fans to another edition of PWI Newswire from the home offices of Pro Wrestling Illustrated in Blue Bell, PA, on this 101st edition of LOW All-Star Wrestling. There is plenty to discuss but I’m going to start off with the reigning LOW World Heavyweight Champion Randy “Macho Man” Savage. The champ has been on an ambitious title defense schedule of late facing such foes as Magnum T.A., Adrian Adonis, Harley Race, and the two-time PWI Invitational Cup Tournament winner Nick Bockwinkel.
As a matter of fact, his clash with Bockwinkel recently at Madison Square Garden (Card #1415) has been the focus of plenty of attention amidst the controversial fallout. Savage won the match on a disqualification, following interference by Heenan Family members “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers, Big John Studd and King Kong Bundy. It took Andre the Giant and a host of others to save the champion from what could have been serious injury. LOW Commissioner Teddy Long got involved and informed Savage that he could have whatever kind of match he wants against any or all of the Heenan Family and on today’s broadcast in hour one we will find out what the “Macho Man” has decided.
I want to offer my congratulations to the British Bulldogs, Dynamite Kid & Davey Boy Smith, on their recent win over Jack & Jerry Brisco for the LOW World Tag Team Titles. The brothers Brisco had just started their reign, having won the belts from the Midnight Express, but tag team competition is fierce in LOW and the Bulldogs were up to the task. That match took place in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England (Card #1417) for World of Sport and the home fans were ecstatic over the title win for the Bulldogs.
Within hours of the title win by the Bulldogs, the office of LOW Commissioner Teddy Long was busy handling requests for title matches including from former champions Jack & Jerry Brisco and Jim Cornette’s Midnight Express. Many bids were put in but Long announced that the first challengers will be none other than record nine-time LOW World Tag Team Champions the Road Warriors, Animal & Hawk. That match has been officially signed to take place at the Boston Gardens in Boston, MA (Card #1425) and it will be a super showdown for sure. I recently spoke with “Precious” Paul Ellering, the manager of the Road Warriors, via telephone and he said that the three year championship drought for his men will come to an end as they look forward to becoming ten-time world tag team champions.
The Empress Ring division of LOW has also seen some recent upheaval, most notably with Toni Rose winning the Empress Ring Title from Mildred Burke. The big upset victory for Rose came on that big MSG show noted earlier and I can tell you that Burke was hot and looking for a rematch. Another woman who wants a title shot is another former champion in the Fabulous Moolah who had previously lost that title to Burke at the Tokyo Dome earlier this year. Both women will have to wait their turn, though, as first up to challenge Rose will be yet another former champion in the popular Tina Moretti. She will clash with Rose upcoming in Chicago, IL (Card #1427), for Golden Age Wrestling.
The Empress Ring Tag Team Titles also changed hands recently as the Glamour Girls, Leilani Kai & Judy Martin, toppled Joyce Grable & Thekla on the debut show for Grand Prix Wrestling in Montreal, Quebec, Canada (Card #1418). It’s the second go round for Martin as an Empress Ring Tag Team Champion as she and the Fabulous Moolah were the inaugural title holders last year. As with the singles championship, the tag team titles in Empress Ring are hotly contested and the first test for the Glamour Girls takes place upcoming for Kings Road United in Kobe, Japan (Card #1421) with Candi Divine & Susan Green as the challengers.
Speaking of tag team competition, this time in the trios division, congratulations to “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles and the Rock n’ Roll Express, Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson, who won the LOW Trios Titles from El Ejercito de la Noche, or The Night Army, of Vampiro, Kevin Thorn & Darby Allin at The Omni in Atlanta, GA (Card #1413). The new champions have no time to regroup as on today’s broadcast they will defend against Team Angle of Kurt Angle, Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas. Shelly Martinez, the manager of The Night Army, will definitely be tuned in for that as her men will face the winning team in a title rematch at Arena Mexico (Card #1424) for Lucha MAX. Well, that’s all for today fans enjoy the show and I will see you at the matches…”
WMC-TV5 Studios - Memphis, TN - Hour One - Announcers: Lance Russell & Dave Brown
LR: “Ok and welcome everyone to hour one of our broadcast and without further ado I am going to bring out the LOW World Heavyweight champion, the “Macho Man” Randy Savage, for a very important announcement.”
RS: “Ooohhhh Yeaaahhh, thank you Lance Russell and I have to say it is an honor and a privilege for me to be here today speaking with you once again, Ooohhhh Yeaaahhh!”
LR: “Thanks “Macho Man” and I have to say you have been one busy champion, most admirably so I must say, turning back a wealth of challengers but most recently at MSG you had one heck of a fight on your hands with Nick Bockwinkel.”
RS: “No doubt, Lance, and while I give Bockwinkel all the respect in the world as a top flight competitor let’s just say his reliance on Bobby “The Weasel” Heenan is a negative. I found that out when Heenan and his men tried to end my career right there in the Garden, yeah.”
LR: Well, Randy, LOW Commissioner Teddy Long has stepped in and granted you a match with the Heenan Family and the question now is how will you go about accepting that?”
RS: “Lance, I gave it some real thought, yeah, and I decided that I wanted all of them in the ring at the same time, yeah. Bockwinkel, Rogers, Studd, Bundy and even “the Weasel” himself. I told that to Teddy Long and he said no. He said no to the LOW World Heavyweight Champion, the “Macho Man” Randy Savage, can you believe that Lance? Well, I said to him that if I can’t have that then I will find me some partners, yeah, and take them all on including Heenan. However, Long said that wouldn’t be possible as Heenan put in an exemption for himself when agreeing to the match contract.”
LR: “Well, it’s frustrating that you can’t get Heenan in there but I’m sure you have another plan.”
RS: “That’s where it gets interesting, Lance, and so upcoming in Chicago I will be teaming with Bobo Brazil, Antonino Rocca and none other than the man I beat for this world championship, Johnny Valentine, to face the Heenan Family, Ooooohhh Yeaaahhh!”
LR: “That is huge news, Randy, and I can’t believe you got Valentine to agree… Well, hold on a minute.”
Harley Race, a two-time LOW World Heavyweight Champion, suddenly entered the interview area and took exception to Savage being there. He threatened to hit him but Savage did not back down as a beleaguered Russell stepped in between the two men.
LR: “Ok, Harley, what are you doing here? You are not scheduled for this broadcast.”
HR: “Russell, I don’t need an invitation I’m Harley Race. I’ll go where I want when I want and get what I want. Savage, you know you got lucky in Atlanta and escaped via that outdated over the top rope rule used at The Omni. I respect you as a man and as a champion but I can’t respect that. I am here now to challenge you to a world title match.”
RS: “You don’t need to say anymore, Race, and I’ll give you what you want. Name the place and time, Ooohhhh Yeaaahhh!”
HR: “I’ll put this simply. ACW is running the Bayfront Center Arena in St. Petersburg, FL, upcoming and if you’ve got the guts you will show up and put that title on the line.”
RS: “Challenge accepted. Is that simple enough for you?”
Russell said the rematch between Savage and Race, not to mention the big eight-man tag team match upcoming, will be a true test for Savage. The tension continued to build as Russell called for security to get in between the two men, escorting them off as Dave Brown took over.
DB: “Ok, Lance, that was a most interesting development and as for hour one today we have a big main event with Jeff Cobb facing Mark Henry in a true battle of the strongmen. Also appearing will be James Storm, “The Birdman” Koko B. Ware and Gorgeous George but up first we have the debut of a new tag team here in LOW so let’s go to the ring…”
01) Pat Patterson & Ray Stevens defeated Rocky Kernodle & George South
* Making their LOW tag team debut, Pat Patterson & Ray “The Crippler” Stevens took on Rocky Kernodle & George South with hour one referee James Beard on the call. This was a good showcase for Patterson, who was also making his LOW debut, as he and Stevens held the advantage most of the way. A Boston Crab by Patterson took the measure of South and Stevens followed up with the Bombs Away for the pin.
They stopped by the announce table afterward, saying that they have signed with Pacific Coast Wrestling and plan on excelling in both singles and tag team competition. Stevens said, “call us the Blonde Bombers, call us whatever you want, but me and Pat are going to deliver a painful message to anyone with enough guts to get in the ring with us!”
02) James Storm defeated Savage-T (with KJ Hill)
* “Cowboy” James Storm of ECW took on Savage-T, who was accompanied by his valet KJ Hill. Savage-T was relentless on offense but it only took one move for Storm to win. On the defensive, Storm dropped Savage-T with Beer Bottle Smash and scored the pin. Hill complained to referee James Beard but he was not having it and gave the win to Storm.
Russell called Storm over to the interview area and brought up the recent attack by the Dirty White Boy on him in ECW. Storm said he has no patience for sneak attacks and called out DWB who he saw in the back. DWB showed up and said in order to climb to the top he has to go through the likes of Storm who has been “afraid to face him” in ECW. Storm balked at that and took him up on his challenge, telling him to “get ready for some beer bottle payback!”
03) Koko B. Ware defeated Nacho Barrera
* The popular “Birdman” Koko B. Ware of the CWA was in action next against Mexico City’s own Nacho Barrera. This was all Ware from the open and, after a swinging neckbreaker, he hit the Brainbuster on Barrera for the pin.
04) Piper's Pit with The Quebecers:
* “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, flanked by his personal bodyguard “Ace” Cowboy Bob Orton Jr., welcomed The Quebecers, Jacques Rougeau & Pierre Carl Oullett, as his guests. He said, “I’m not all that acquainted with you.”, drawing smirks from the Grand Prix Wrestling standouts. Jacques answered and said that Piper may remember their long run in Pacific Coast Wrestling, where they beat Playboy Buddy Rose & “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers in a recent Steel Cage match and now their debut with GPW where they beat the Long Riders. Piper pretended not to know but Orton whispered something to him. Piper laughed and said that doesn’t jog his memory. Pierre took exception but Jacques stepped in between them and said maybe Piper should watch their upcoming match with The Sheepherders in Grand Prix for some examples of what tag team wrestling is all about. Piper said he doesn’t have time for watching “losers”, saying that The Sheepherders are tag team wrestling. Piper dropped the mic and walked off leaving an angry pair of Quebecers behind.
05) Gorgeous George (with Cherie Dupre) defeated Ric McCord
* The capable Ric McCord took on Gorgeous George of Golden Age Wrestling. George’s valet, Cherie Dupre, made sure to spray everything down with the perfume atomizer to George’s liking. McCord seemed unphased and took the measure of George early keeping the flamboyant star off balance. This was a good bout that ended with a nice rope counter by George with a cradle hold for a two count before he caught McCord with the Rolling Hiplocks for the pin.
06) Mark Henry defeated Jeff Cobb
* The hour one main event courtesy of Pacific Coast Wrestling saw a rematch between “Mr. Athletic” Jeff Cobb and the “World’s Strongest Man” Mark Henry. Cobb won their initial encounter and so Henry was out to even the score. Cobb held the advantage early, including delivering the pumphandle fallaway slam on Henry. Russell and Brown marveled at the strength of Cobb but Henry soon showed his power as well. A double clothesline out of the corner ended it as Henry recovered first and crushed Cobb with the World’s Strongest Slam for the pin.
A victorious Henry joined Russell in the interview area and said that now that he finished off Cobb he was ready for a new challenge in Pacific Coast Wrestling. Cobb took exception to that and headed over telling Henry that nothing was finished and all he did was even the score. Things got heated before Cobb told Henry to put his money where his “big mouth” is and come back next week for a Loser Leaves PCW match. Henry tried to laugh it off but Cobb pushed him on it and he finally accepted with Russell saying the stakes will indeed be raised on the next edition of ASW.
The Sportatorium - Tampa, FL - Hour Two - Announcer: Gordon Solie
* GS: “Well, that was certainly a big announcement at the conclusion of our first hour with Jeff Cobb challenging Mark Henry to a Loser Leaves PCW match right here next week on ASW. I’m not sure how we will top that but we’ll try in this second hour which will be headlined by AJ Styles and the Rock n’ Roll Express defending the LOW Trios Titles against Kurt Angle, Shelton Benjamin, and Charlie Haas of Team Angle. That should be one heck of a contest and so let’s get it over to our ring announcer to begin the festivities…”
01) Allysin Kay defeated Jazzy Gabert
* Empress Ring action opened up the second hour and it was a grudge match as “AK-47” Allysin Kay took on the “Alpha Female” Jazzy Gabert. Hour two referee Joey Marella was in charge as Solie referenced a Kay-Gabert meeting being akin to a female version of Cobb-Henry in terms of power. The grudge aspect of the match centered around the two squaring off after a recent tag team loss. This was a hard fought bout that saw Kay score a big near fall late with a wheelbarrow driver (ch) before hitting Fade to Black for the pin.
02) Subculture defeated Lenny Lane & Mr. X
* Subculture, Mark Andrews & Flash Morgan Webster, of World of Sport faced Lenny Lane & Mr. X. Solie noted that the popularity of Subculture is growing in WOS and around the world. They looked great here dominating a good portion of the match before Webster trapped Mr. X in The Strangler, a front guillotine choke, for a submission victory.
03) Terry Gordy defeated Jake Milliman
* Jake “The Milkman” Milliman had the unenviable task of facing ACW star Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy. Milliman threw everything but the kitchen sink at Gordy who wound up blasting him with a lariat to cut off an offensive. Gordy followed up with the Power Bomb for the pin as Solie noted that whether he is in singles competition or teaming up with Steve “Dr. Death” Williams there are few men that can stop someone like Gordy.
04) Big Van Vader & Hacksaw Jim Duggan defeated Beef Candy
* The intimidating duo of Big Van Vader & Hacksaw Jim Duggan of the CWA took on Beef Candy, Richie Slade & Flex McCallion. Beef Candy surprised early, even managing to hit Candy Mutilation, but it didn’t take long for Vader and Duggan to take over. They battered Beef Candy in and out of the ring before Vader leveled McCallion with the Released Power Bomb to score the pin. Vader and Duggan stopped by the announce task to talk about their upcoming match with Roddy Piper & Cowboy Bob Orton Jr. in Boston, MA. After speaking their minds, Solie quipped “As great as these matches are on TV, they’re that much better live at your local arena. So, get out and watch them.”
05) Tom Lawlor defeated Cousin Luke
* The popular Cousin Luke, a new signee of ASW, had a tough draw taking on “Filthy” Tom Lawlor of ECW. Luke held his own for a stretch before Lawlor, formerly one-third of the LOW Trios Champions, took over winning by submission with the Rear Naked Choke. Solie noted that Lawlor could become a force on his own in ECW.
06) LOW Trios Titles: Team Angle defeated AJ Styles & Rock n' Roll Express to win the titles
* The newly crowned 4th LOW Trios Champions “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles and the Rock n’ Roll Express, Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson, defended against Team Angle – Kurt Angle, Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas – of the CWA in the hour two main event. This was a great bout that saw both sides with chances to win. The turning point came when Angle was on the defensive but countered and nailed Morton with a German suplex. A quick tag to Haas led to the finish as Team Angle hit the Leap of Faith on Morton with Benjamin scoring the pin while a save attempt by Styles and Gibson was fended off. Solie said that history was made as Team Angle were crowned the new LOW Trios Champions and threw it to hour three saying, “so long from the sunshine state.”
Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY - Hour Three - Announcers: Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby Heenan
GM: “Thanks Gordon, and welcome everyone to our third hour of…”
BH: “I’ll take it from here, Monsoon. Welcome to hour three of LOW All-Star Wrestling and I’m your host Bobby “The Brain” Heenan alongside the ape man, the Gorilla, and the loser of our tag team match last week. Monsoon, I never thought that it would be so easy to pin your four-hundred pound carcass to the mat but I did just that in front of the whole world. Well, how about that, Monsoon?”
GM: “Are you done? First of all, Brain, or should I call you “weasel”, you used a foreign object to win it and I guarantee if I could you in there again you won’t be so lucky. As a matter of fact, I have it on good authority that our esteemed LOW Commissioner Teddy Long is entertaining my request for a singles match.”
BH: “Now, uh, well, now is that necessary Monsoon? I’m going to call my lawyer!”
GM: “You do just that, Brain, now lets go to the ring for our opening match!”
01) Hamilton Wrecking Crew defeated Super Troopers
* The Super Troopers, Officer Warren Barksdale & “Supercop” Dick Justice, took on the Hamilton Wrecking Crew, John & Chris Tolos, of Grand Prix Wrestling. The Troopers gave the Wrecking Crew a run for their money, even dominating the bout at one point. The former LOW World Tag Team Champions had to dig down deep but won in the end. The finish saw John Tolos pin Justice after a Brutal Double Team by the Wrecking Crow. The “Golden Greek” grabbed the mic after the victory and exclaimed, “Wrestling is spelled T-O-L-O-S!”
* Prior to the next match, Bobby Heenan went to the locker room area to interview Sherri Martel, the most decorated women’s champion in LOW history. Heenan praised the skills, abilities and beauty of Martel proclaiming her the “greatest of all-time!” Martel happily accepted the compliment and added that no matter what she has accomplished she never underestimates her opponents. Heenan said he forget to add brains too, flirting with Martel. She then kissed him on the cheek and headed to the ring…
02) Lacey Ryan vs. Sherri Martel was a DDQ
* Promising star Lacy Ryan out of Las Vegas, NV, had her work cut out for her against Sherri Martel. As Heenan returned to the both, Monsoon said “You are ridiculous” for how he handled his interview with Martel. This was a rout by Martel early but then Ryan turned it around. She mounted a spectacular counter-attack and nearly pinned Martel with Lights Out. Martel was reeling and a nervous Heenan expressed dissatisfaction with hour three referee Dick Woehrle. Monsoon said the veteran official was calling it fairly and ultimately Woehrle had enough calling for a double disqualification as Ryan and Martel fought outside the ring. Heenan said he needed to go check on Martel, “maybe she needs mouth to mouth”, drawing a “Will you stop!” reply from Monsoon.
03) The Spoiler defeated Ron Hutchison
* This one didn’t last long as PCW star The Spoiler pounced on Ron Hutchison before the bell. He quickly locked on the Bionic Claw and Hutchison, unable to fight back, tapped out giving the masked man a submission victory.
04) The Crusher & Baron Von Raschke defeated Frogman LeBlanc & Keith Steinborn
* GAW stars The Crusher & Baron Von Raschke joined forces to battle Frogman LeBlanc & Keith Steinborn. This was a demolition job as The Crusher and The Baron made quick work of their foes. It ended when The Crusher trapped LeBlanc in the Crusher Nelson for a submission victory. Monsoon taunted Heenan saying that this new team of The Crusher and The Baron could make life miserable for the Heenan Family in Golden Age Wrestling. Heenan balked at that and went on a rant into commercial about how Randy Savage “illegally conspired” with LOW Commissioner Teddy Long to force that upcoming eight-man tag team match.
05) Mike Rotunda defeated Larry Sharpe
* Popular CWA star Mike Rotunda faced “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe in singles action. This was a good bout that included Sharpe hitting his trademark Piledriver for a two count. Rotunda went to his technical skills late frustrating Sharpe before executing the Butterfly Suplex for the pin. Monsoon noted that Rotunda, Blackjack Mulligan, Barry Windham and Ken Shamrock still very much have their sights set on J.J. Dillon’s New Age Horsemen in the CWA.
06) LOW Tex-Arkana Television Title: Manny Fernandez© defeated Les Thatcher to retain the title
* Les Thatcher of ACW looked to strike gold as he took on the 44th LOW Tex-Arkana Television Champion “Raging Bull” Manny Fernandez in the hour three main event. Fernandez, representing Pacific Coast Wrestling, had a strong showing early and hit the Flying Burrito for a big near fall. Thatcher recovered and began battling back, eventually scoring a two count with a flying head scissors into a cradle hold. A great finishing sequence saw Thatcher going for a vertical suplex but Fernandez countered out delivering a Scoop Slam followed with a press to score the pin.
It was a successful version two title defense for Fernandez with Monsoon calling it “a great battle between the two youngsters.” Heenan asked Monsoon if he was ok mistaking the “elderly for youngsters.” “Give me a break!” replied Monsoon who ended the show with huge news. He said that due to the recent retirement of Jumbo Tsuruta over in Kings Road United, he was graciously offered a roster spot by Rikidozan which he has accepted. He said he was on his way to the airport to travel to Tokyo but would be back next week for more All-Star Wrestling. Heenan, looking perplexed as Monsoon headed off, closed the show saying, “I guess even humanoids like Gorilla are wanted somewhere.”
