8) LOW World tag team titles: The Warlord & Rhino (with Jimmy Hart) defeated Rock n’ Roll Express© (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) by DQ
Match Highlights:
Following a hard fought win over the rugged Russian duo of Nikolai Volkoff & Boris Zhukov, the Midnight Rockers (Stan Lane & Marty Jannetty) remained at ringside as the Rock n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) headed to the ring to defend the LOW World tag team titles against The Warlord & Rhino. The two popular tag teams engaged in a stare down in the aisle drawing yells of excitement from the crowd. As Jannetty and Lane backed off allowing the Express to pass, a defiant Morton held up his tag title belt and indicated that the Express would be more than happy to face the Rockers down the line. The Warlord & Rhino, who were already in the ring with their manager Jimmy Hart, shouted at both teams that they would be the next world tag team champions. The Rock n’ Roll Express then charged into the ring to get the highly anticipated main event underway.
This battle of the speed and tag team finesse of the Rock n’ Roll Express against the size, power and dominance of The Warlord & Rhino had the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout. The Warlord nearly put Morton away early when he crushed him with a short-arm clothesline. Gibson helped to rally the Express who went two-on-one against The Warlord hitting both the double back body drop and the slingshot stomp. Rhino looked strong when he was in and caught Gibson with a counter power bomb off a backdrop attempt resulting in a big near fall.
The wild battle nearly ended when the Express hit their trademark Double Dropkick on The Warlord but Hart got up on the ring apron breaking up the count as he distracted the referee. The Warlord recovered and got the megaphone that Hart dropped into the ring which he used to smash Morton in the head. The Warlord then locked on the Full Nelson going for the submission but somehow Morton fought his way to the ropes for a break. That led to a tag to Rhino who blasted Morton with the GORE! but before he could score the pin the Midnight Rockers hit the ring. Rhino got up but was met with a double superkick resulting in the referee calling for the bell. The Warlord & Rhino won it on a disqualification but the decision allowed the Rock n’ Roll Express to survive their version three defense of the championship. Hart and his First Family members were furious over the decision and tried for a post-match attack but the Express and the Rockers connected with stereo double dropkicks driving The Warlord and Rhino out of the ring.
As for the Rockers vs. Volkoff & Zhukov, the Russian team did a great job of dominating the early action especially getting the heat on Lane. Volkoff nearly put him out with a Russian Bearhug while Zhukov clobbered him with multiple headbutts for a near fall. When Lane was able to make a tag, the Rockers turned things around and managed to keep the 313-pound Volkoff on the defensive. A combination Flapjack led to a near fall before Volkoff was busted open as Jannetty ran him into the guard rail. Zhukov managed to tag in and the Russians used the double team in corner to neutralize the Rockers. A throat drop on the ropes by Volkoff led to a near fall on Lane before the Rockers regained control. They had Volkoff reeling at the end as another near fall on a Flapjack set up Jannetty nailing him with a DDT for the pin as Lane prevented Zhukov from making a save.
In other action…
“Mr. USA” Tony Atlas was looking for revenge against SSA, Inc. as he took on Playboy Buddy Rose who was accompanied by his girlfriend Sherri Martel, a former SHIMMER and Ring Angels champion. Rose, claiming to weigh in at a “slim and trim 217 pounds”, as opposed to the 271 pounds announced by Gary Michael Cappetta, challenged Atlas to a pose down pre-match and “Mr. USA” gladly accepted. Atlas easily won that by fan vote and then overpowered Rose in the early going including hitting the Press Slam and Splash for a big near fall. Martel was beside herself at ringside calling for Rose to get back into it but a determined Atlas kept dominating the action. That domination led to a brief loss of composure for Atlas as he battered Rose at ringside and struck him several times with a chair resulting in a snake eyes disqualification call by the referee. Atlas then fired Rose back in and pounded on him until Martel called out The Mountie giving SSA, Inc. a two-on-one advantage. It wound up with Pepper Gomez running in to help Atlas setting off a four-way brawl. That also led to the four being put together in a tag team match so it will be Atlas and Gomez versus Rose and The Mountie when PCW runs the legendary Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA (Card #1236).
Popular PCW newcomers “Mr. Athletic” Jeff Cobb & Flip Gordon joined forces to take on the First Family tandem of Sabu & “The Wrench” Conor Claxton. Jimmy Hart was at ringside for the First Family team and attempted to interfere at a key point but was decked by the powerful Cobb. Claxton, who looked very impressive during his time in, wound up being busted open late coming under the combined assault of Cobb and Gordon. Sabu, who nearly won it with a Camel Clutch on Gordon, made a key save after Cobb planted the bloody Claxton with Tour of the Islands. As Cobb and Sabu battled to the outside, Gordon, coming off a blind tag, blitzed Claxton hitting him with a superkick followed by the spectacular 4-Nifty, a 450 Splash variation, for the pin.
The sum of $15,000 was on the line as fifteen of the best from PCW, including reigning LOW Tex-Arkana Television champion The Mountie, participated in a 15-Man over-the-top rope Battle Royal. A surprise elimination came when young Chaz Taylor caught Jimmy Snuka off guard sending the “Superfly” over the top rope early in the match. Chaz and his father, the 325-pound Tugboat Taylor, fared very well until Chaz was ousted by Dr. Tom Prichard after a furious exchange. Tugboat avenged his son by eliminating Prichard, one of his four eliminations in the match. Tugboat also eliminated Angelo “King Kong” Mosca, The Mountie and Fred Blassie. “The Ace” Cowboy Bob Orton, the bodyguard of the “Hot Rod” Rowdy Roddy Piper, performed his job well as he saved Piper from elimination twice in the match. The first time against Dutch Savage and the second against Don Muraco. It was Muraco who eliminated Orton which led to Piper ousting Muraco to stay in. It came down to Taylor against Piper with the crowd solidly behind the Tugboat. Piper, however, got the better of the big man and after putting him out with a Sleeper Hold he was able to oust him from the ring to win the match. Orton returned to celebrate with Piper who flaunted the $15,000 check at the downed Tugboat along with the ringside fans.
Sherri Martel led her team of the Texas Hangmen (Killer & Psycho) into battle with two more Texas natives in Johnny Mantell & Scott Casey. Mantell, who is a native of Montague County, TX, was making his PCW debut but much like Steve Regal earlier he found himself on the losing end of things. The Hangmen worked like a well oiled machine keeping Mantell and Casey on the defensive for most of the match. It was over quickly when a second delivery of the Hangmen Backbreaker saw Killer cover Mantell for the pin. Martel was pleased with the victory by her men and said that they will be future LOW World tag team champions.
The stars of the Ring Angels division of LOW were featured in tag team action as Ida Mae Martinez & Amber O’Neal took on Angel Orsini & Rain. Both teams were on point for this one making for a great back and forth match that nearly went the time limit. The powerful Orsini impressed by twice surviving the Blonde Bomb, a double reverse STO, and nearly pinning Martinez with a German Suplex. Rain was equally impressive and nearly won it for her team with the Tomikaze on O’Neal but a save by Martinez set off a four-way brawl. The referee was unable to regain control and threw the match out resulting in a double disqualification decision.
The popular S.D. “Special Delivery” Jones of LOW All-Star Wrestling thrilled the crowd with his opening match win over “Mr. Electricity” Steve Regal who was making his debut in PCW. Regal hoped to get off to a strong start in his debut but the stars of ASW have often scored big upsets as happened once again here. Regal looked great early hitting moves like the Russian leg sweep and leaping elbow drop. Jones managed to battle back and rocked Regal with a big power body slam before trapping him in a Sleeper Hold. Regal was unable to escape and Jones put him out scoring a submission victory.
