Match Highlights:
The final night of King of Trios weekend opened with semi-final round action as the Big Mack Attack (The Mack, Moose & Dante Fox) took on F.I.S.T. (IWA J-Crown champion Chuck Taylor, Icarus & Gran Akuma). The reunited F.I.S.T. received a huge ovation as they hit the ring to face the Lucha Underground representatives captained by The Mack. F.I.S.T. tore it up early and nearly put The Mack away with an Awful Waffle from Taylor and the CHIKARA Special from Icarus. The Mack kicked out of the former at two and barely got to the ropes for a break on the latter. Moose used his impressive size and strength to turn things around as he laid out Taylor with the Pounce setting up Fox hitting a springboard 450 splash for a near fall. F.I.S.T came back getting the heat on Fox for an extended stretch but the Ansonia, CT, native showed great resilience by kicking out of the Blu-Ray from Icarus and the Yoshi Tonic from Akuma. The finish of a hectic battle saw Fox rally back hitting another springboard 450 splash on Taylor but the pin was broken up. Fox wound up fending off Icarus while The Mack clotheslined Akuma over the top rope. Fox then hit the Imploding Senton on the downed Taylor to score the pin and send the Big Mack Attack to the finals. After Big Mack Attack left, F.I.S.T. remained soaking in the cheers of the crowd before Taylor grabbed the mic and wished his brothers well in their return to Extreme CHIKARA Wrestling. Icarus responded in kind about Taylor in the IWA in defense of his IWA J-Crown title and said that even though they are going their separate ways they will remain “Friends In Similar Tights”!
The other semi-final round match saw Legends of the Mask (Mil Mascaras, The Destroyer & Tiger Mask) take on the Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly) in a highly anticipated showdown. Mascaras nearly put this one to bed early as he caught Cole with the Flying Bodypress for a dramatic near fall. Cole was in shock as he retreated to his corner looking for support from Fish and O’Reilly. The Undisputed Era managed to regroup and mounted a counterattack which included Fish leveling Tiger Mask with a big roundhouse kick. The Destroyer tagged in not long after that and wound up trapping O’Reilly in the Figure Four Leglock nearly resulting in a submission victory. O’Reilly managed to turn the punishing hold over into the ropes for a break. Cole led his team in a strong attack late until disaster struck when Tiger Mask hit O‘Reilly with a spectacular dive out of the ring. With the others distracted, three hooded men climbed over the ring barrier and gave O’Reilly a Spike Piledriver on the concrete floor that went unseen by Tiger Mask, the referee and the other wrestlers. Tiger Mask then slowly crawled back inside as the referee completed a ten count and Legends of the Mask advanced to the final round with a controversial count out victory.
As Fish checked on the downed O’Reilly, Cole vehemently argued over the decision with the referee. Mascaras, representing his team, offered to continue the match but the referee said that the decision stood drawing jeers from the crowd. As Mascaras, The Destroyer and Tiger Mask left ringside, the hooded men rushed the ring and jumped Cole delivering a quick beatdown before Fish grabbed a chair and chased them off. As the three stood at ringside they slowly lifted their hoods revealing none other than Bullet Club members “The Cleaner” Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)! Omega and the Bucks taunted the Undisputed Era before escaping through a side door leaving Cole and Fish in stunned silence. O’Reilly, meanwhile, was taken to the back on a stretcher but fortunately he was not seriously hurt in the attack. Exiled from the tournament when former Bullet Club member Cole signed the contract intended for The Elite, Omega and the Bucks gained major revenge on the Undisputed Era and no doubt the rivalry between the two sides is going to explode because of this volatile incident.
The final round of the IWA King of Trios tournament saw the Big Mack Attack (The Mack, Moose & Dante Fox) up against Legends of the Mask (Mil Mascaras, The Destroyer & Tiger Mask) with the prestigious tournament medals at stake. With the warning by Catrina dogging them, the Big Mack Attack jumped Legends of the Mask before the opening bell getting the tournament final off to an explosive start. The Mack pounded away on Mascaras early and scored a two count on the seven-time LOW World Heavyweight champion with a standing Moonsault. Moose also got his shots in on Mascaras including nailing him with the Pounce. The Destroyer helped turn things around for his team delivering a barrage of handstand knee drops on Moose for a two count. Fox tagged in and, after getting the better of The Destroyer, took over on Tiger Mask getting heat on him for an extended stretch. Fox scored a big near fall on Tiger Mask with Lo Mein Pain before setting up Moose connecting with another big Pounce. Tiger Mask was finally able to make the hot tag to Mascaras who went on a nice offensive tear until The Mack cut him off. The Mack, perhaps out of some desperation, caught Mascaras with the MDX, a wicked running clothesline into the corner, and then rolled him up pulling on the tights for extra leverage to score the pin.
The Big Mack Attack were crowned the IWA King of Trios champions beating out an incredible field of talent and most importantly Legends of the Mask in the finals. It was a controversial finish, though, and The Mack showed a different side of himself by using underhanded tactics to pin Mascaras resulting in a rare direct pinfall loss for the Mexican superstar. Mascaras confronted The Mack following the match and had to be restrained by The Destroyer and Tiger Mask from going after a man that he considered a friend in Lucha Underground. Moose and Fox, meanwhile, proudly hoisted The Mack up on their shoulders and carried him over to the stairs set up in the ring where the three were presented with their King of Trios medals by IWA Commissioner David Marquez. Somewhere, Catrina, the new power broker in Lucha Underground, had to be pleased with the outcome.
In other action…
The IWA Heavyweight title was on the line as newly crowned champion “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson answered the challenge of Randy “Macho Man” Savage in a match that had the crowd split in their support. Danielson got off to a quick start catching Savage with an airplane spin and discus elbow smash for a two count. Savage struck back with a running knee to the back and came off the top rope deathjump style with a flying bodypress for a two count of his own. Savage kept up his assault with a blistering piledriver and knee drop resulting in another two count. Danielson recovered from that and twice locked on the crossface chickenwing, but Savage was able to fight out of the punishing hold. A dive to the outside by Danielson gave way to a tense battle on the floor where each man ran each other into the ring post. Back inside, Danielson caught Savage with both a Tiger Suplex and a Dragon Suplex shaking up the challenger. A late rally by Savage was cut off by Danielson who caught him with the Regal Plex and scored the pin to retain the title. It was a successful version one defense of the title for Danielson who turned back a fierce challenge from the “Macho Man”.
The finals of the two-night Rey de Voladores tournament saw the “Aerial Assassin” Will Ospreay, the former IWA J-Crown champion, taking on Sabu of Pacific Coast Wrestling. Manager Jimmy Hart came to ringside with Sabu but was quickly ejected by IWA officials to prevent outside interference. Hart went away kicking and screaming but Sabu, who was returning to his old stomping grounds of Philadelphia, didn’t let that affect him as he locked eyes with Ospreay. This was an amazing final round match that saw both men display the aerial skills that have made them among the best high-flyers in all LOW. Sabu looked to take it early as he scored a near fall with a huracanrana and then locked Ospreay in the Camel Clutch. Ospreay had to fight out of the punishing hold as he refused to tap out. Ospreay would follow with a magnificent attack that saw him hit the Essex Destroyer three times only to have Sabu kick out of the pin attempts. That was an amazing show of resiliency from Sabu who afterward took the fight to the floor connecting with a cannonball dive off the apron knocking Ospreay into the ring barrier. Back inside it was Ospreay regaining control and after a Cheeky Nandos Kick he went for a deathjump (ch) but Sabu alertly rolled out of the way. Ospreay was hurt and Sabu quickly trapped him in a Counter Cradle Hold and scored the pin. A classic wrestling move ended a great bout and Sabu, following in the footsteps of stars like Tiger Mask, ACH and Frightmare, was named the winner of the Rey de Voladores tournament. Hart returned blaring the siren on his megaphone and grabbed the trophy away from the referee to give it to Sabu while Ospreay looked on. Ospreay went for a handshake but Hart objected to it. Sabu, however, stepped in front of his manager and shook hands with Ospreay anyway to cheers from the crowd. It was a monumental victory for Sabu who can return to PCW with a lot of momentum.
Dem Boys, Mark & Jay Briscoe, turned back strong challenges from Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano and Ringkampf (WALTER & Timothy Thatcher) to retain the IWA tag team titles in a Triple Threat Match. This was not an elimination match, so it meant that the first team to score a pinfall or a submission would be declared the winners. The action was all over the place in what turned out to be one heck of a match featuring some tremendous near falls. WALTER proved to be a tour de force in this one using his size and strength to dominate, and he also nearly won it with both his Power Bomb and Gojira Clutch. Thatcher scored his own near finish with the Saka Otoshi on Jay Briscoe for a late submission chance. Ciampa and Gargano likewise had their own big moments including Gargano nearly putting Mark Briscoe away with the Gargano Clutch. The Briscoes hit the Doomsday Device on both WALTER and Ciampa during the match but both times the pin was broken up. In the end it was Gargano missing with a running double knees allowing Mark to catch him with a wicked Saito Suplex to score the pin. It was a successful version four defense of the titles for the Briscoes but both challenging teams served notice that they could one day also hold the IWA tag team titles.
The highly anticipated showdown between Jay Lethal and “A Double” Austin Aries featured some surprise twists and turns surrounding an awesome match. SoCal Val was at ringside for Lethal, but she was soon countered by Percy Pringle III, head of the Pringle Dynasty. Many were shocked when Pringle showed up and he wound up getting involved at one point as Lethal was in full control. That set up Aries going for the 450 Splash but Lethal rolled out of the way. Later, as Lethal had Aries pinned after Hail to the King, the ring was surrounded by Pringle Dynasty members Lance Hoyt, Brodie Lee and Big Duke. That distraction prevented a pin and led to the referee ejecting Pringle and his men from ringside. Hoyt and Lee seemed to be back on the same page following their tense confrontation after losing on opening night at King of Trios. The wild battle continued with Aries scoring big near falls with the Brainbuster and 450 Splash before Lethal rallied and trapped him in the Koji Clutch scoring a submission victory. It was another tough loss for Aries who looked on in disgust as Lethal, the former IWA Heavyweight champion, got a celebratory kiss from SoCal Val. As for Pringle and his men there is no telling what they are up to regarding Aries or maybe even Lethal.
In a rematch of their brutal Falls Count Anywhere Match during WrestleCade 12 weekend, former Shield teammates Drew Galloway and Jon Moxley took it to the extreme once again. Both men were determined to administer as much punishment on the other as possible and this match featured some wild out of the ring action. That included Galloway delivering the Scot Drop on a chair and Moxley diving off a six-foot wall onto Galloway taking out a row of chairs. Back in the ring, Moxley hit his finisher, Moxicity, on Galloway for what looked to be a sure pin but the native of Ayr, Scotland, powered out at the count of two. Galloway then mounted a big comeback and would score the pin snake eyes style after planting Moxley with the Double Arm DDT on a chair in the aisle way. Galloway barely had time to recover and celebrate his win when he was jumped from behind by “Wrestling’s Worst Nightmare” Kevin Steen. It turned into a two-on-one assault when Moxley recovered and they wound up setting up a table at ringside. The intent was for Moxley to hit Moxicity off the apron and through the table, the same way he injured Galloway last year, but the “War King” Eddie Kingston raced to ringside and prevented that setting off a wild four-way brawl. After IWA officials were able to get things settled, IWA Commissioner David Marquez announced that Galloway and Kingston will face Steen and Moxley in the main event of the next IWA On The Mat broadcast which takes place at the Wonderland Ballroom in Revere, MA (Card #1219).
