I feel like anything WWE is pretty much on lock down. This appears on most of their products: "All WWE programming, talent names, images, likenesses, slogans, wrestling moves, trademarks, logos and copyrights are the exclusive property of WWE, Inc. and its subsidiaries." I'm not a lawyer, but my thinking is that a contract with the talent supersedes any trademarking issues from the WWE when it comes to images and likenesses. As for the names of the wrestlers, as has been said, use the Indy names. Wrestling moves are universal regardless of how much stroke the WWE has. Obviously you can't use the name "Pedigree" for Tyler Black, but you can damn well use "Phoenix Splash".

And a Pedigree is just a double-underhook facebuster by any other name.

Just because they say that doesn't mean it's true. My old boss at the book store used to put a copyright date on everything (catalogs, lists, the web site, etc).. completely meaningless meant only to make people think twice.
Just to check... I just search the Trademark database for the US... 'Daniel Bryan' and 'Roman Reigns' are, in fact, trademarked to WWE. Both trademarks specifically cover board games (part of toys/action figures, etc).. as well as apparel. However, 'Five Knuckle Shuffle' is not, nor is 'Tombstone Piledriver' or 'People's Elbow', just to look up a couple classics that seem like they COULD be trademarked. .
Granted, that doesn't mean WWE could harass FG with cease and desist orders and outspend on lawyers to cause trouble, but I think legally it would be allowed.
From my experience with board games in other sports, you don't need a license or any sort of promotion to create and sell a board game using the real life players for, say MLB. If you want to put the team logo on the cards, THAT you need permission for, or if you want to call it an 'official' MLB product. If you want pictures, you need permission. But just stats? Totally fine.
The funny part is if you DO get official permission, sometimes you CANT use the names. APBA (my favorite baseball board game) for a while had an official license, and had the team logos on the cards. Because it was official, that had to have the MLBPA's blessing for the player cards, so there was a handful of players who had fake names because declined to make their name available through the union.
Since the cards have art, that needs permission, but FG has that.

I seem to remember a similar situation with Strat-O-Matic baseball and a certain “Left Fielder” from the San Francisco Giants having a “nameless” card with 73 tainted homeruns because he was a scab and not part of the MLBPA...

Yeah he was like that in the last couple of MVP Baseball games by EA also.

Correct! The same thing happened in NBA games in the 90s with Jordan and Barkley... all the video games always had fake names for them .

If we have to cheat to get a mock up I say forget it. Dudes that want to be in the game, regardless of who they were or how big they got are one welcome. Sure Flair would be great but I'm not holding my breath and it's ok.

What about a set called WAR or something to that affect with some AEW guys and some NXT guys, i.e. Bucks, Omega, Cassidy and Undisputed Era? Could something like that be pulled off? While this "war" has sparked peoples interest it could garner some new fans.
