Reading that Moxley begins his Indy tour dates soon. Will be wrestling Pentagon Jr, Fenix and Darby Allen in various Indy feds.
Also wrestling in NJPW.
So AEW is basically a pimp?
I can’t imagine this continuing once they have the TV deal in place.
I imagine at some point the roster will need to be exclusive, no?

I think it’s a gamble to have their talent elsewhere. Shoot for the PPVs until TV; let talent rest. What if Mox is injured badly in NJPW? I assume once TV starts, they stay exclusive. Why would AEW want to divert the fans’ eyes elsewhere?

IIRC Cody is a big supporter of creating a wrestling union and treating wrestlers truly as independent contractors. I wonder if he’s trying harder to build a safety net for his friends than a real company. Will they still give all these guys insurance while wrestling in North East Wrestling and bar feds? His heart seems to be in the right place - but can be the business man he needs to be to make this work long term?

I actually look at this as a way to market their product to their target audience without paying for ad time. I would imagine that they wouldn’t let Moxley wrestler anyone they don’t trust. My guess is that each of their guys will be wrestling other AEW talent or other guys they can reasonably rely on.
No sense putting on a great (by most accounts) PPV and then sitting on the sidelines until the fall while squandering the momentum that you generated.

If anything they’re using AEW guys to try and help promote obscure Indy feds (North East Wrestling?). Which circles back to my original point about Cody creating a temporary employment service for Indy wrestlers more than an exclusive fed/business. Maybe this changes once they go to TV. It’s just very odd when yesterday Kenny Omega cried (literally cried not complained) about his buddy choosing to stay in NJPW vs joining him in AEW - but now Moxley is going to NJPW. What was the point of all that Omega leaving NJPW for AEW when Moxley is going there now?

He's been on the other side (WWE) more than any of us, so he knows what not to do.

This isn't very out of the ordinary in wrestling. New Japan does this with their signed guys. ROH and Impact have allowed it with their signed guys. Even WWF used to do this stuff (indies booking talent through the company) until the late 90's. We'll see what happens once the AEW TV and touring schedule gets into full swing. In the mean time I agree its not ideal to have your guys sitting on the sidelines for too long, as long as its with the right promotions. NEW is always bring in big names for their shows, including all the Elite guys, so not surprised to see Mox go there at all.

It is worth noting that when it comes to Moxley, he had already committed for these dates before signing his AEW contract.
That said, I think talent will probably have the freedom to do this sort of thing, but I imagine there will be some restrictions here and there and obviously once AEW gets the momentum really going, there simply may not be time for top talent to work anywhere else.

They're clearly signing people who already made it clear they won't be exclusives (Moxley, Fenix, etc.) and in the end, I do believe that Cody really is mostly doing this to give talent insurance and the like and hey if some people enjoy the product more power to them.
The question is, how long do the Khans throw money at it before deciding it's too expensive (and with the number of people signing and all that insurance, it's going to add up fast)
