Well the thing is that the gimmick hasn't actually been explained. They just went from being the Super Smash Brothers to just being a couple of weirdos from Montreal with a bunch of lackeys wearing Hallowicked masks. None of it has been given any context.

And it's now been a few months without there being any explanation. There should be some spooky backstage vignettes giving the viewer some reason for this team to be acting the way they do. Why do they have these weird minions? Why are they "dark?" Are they evil or just generally bad? All we know is that they like to turn off the lights and occasionally attack people.

If there is one issue I have with AEW, it is that they don't explain anything in their shows. Why are there librarians wrestling? Who is Orange Cassidy and why doesn't he do anything? (They seem to rely on audience knowledge from other Indy sources), Why was a heel a babyface's best friend? They have plenty of time to fill us in on their narrative they just don't.

I think think this is exactly it! AEW knows that hardcore wrestling fans who watch indie wrestling know who these people are and the ones that don't will learn as they go. Why they are not doing this in the beginning and help build up stories and wrestlers is beyond me, but perhaps they figure the audience will be smart enough to figure it out with some research? People aren't dumb (for the most part).

People aren't dumb (for the most part). Precisely. Unless you're Jericho or Cody, they spend next to no time with any kind of back story. I still have no idea why Omega and Mox were feuding to the level of a death match. Maybe that was on the earlier ppvs? Instead of having a lackluster women's match so long that it goes through a break, maybe they should have other vignettes etc. In general most of their matches go on too long. I do think they are counting on you being a smark. From Excalibur's references on commentary to expecting fans to watch Dark without any advertising on the main show.

They must have been reading this thread because they did a really weird, tonally off video for the group last night basically saying the group is a cult.

Especially about the tone. It was like something out of a weird horror anime. Which is probably what they were going for? Came off kinda silly to me.

I don't know why they needed to be heel cult leaders. Just rename them and let them be a babyface moves team because that's why people loved them in the first place. I've seen people who were diehard SSB fans in 2011-2012 who hate watching them now because it's not what they want to see from that team.

Funny that JR posed the same question as this thread and then had a video explaining it somewhat. I guess we were not the only confused ones.
