Card #7, WCW Monday Nitro
United Center
Following the opening video, we see a pyrotechnic display as the camera pans to a sold out Omni in Atlanta, Georgia! The camera quickly turns to the announce desk where we see Tony Schiavone and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.
TS: "Welcome to WCW Monday Nitro, Where The Big Boys Play! We are just 13 days out from our next Pay-Per-View spectacular, SuperBrawl, and all the stars of World Championship Wrestling are out tonight. We'll see 2 Cold Scorpio defending the Television Championship against 'Beautiful' Bobby Eaton, we'll have The Heavenly Bodies, The Patriot, The Belfast Bruiser and more Cruiserweight Tournament action. Hello again everyone, I'm Tony Schiavone and I'm joined this week by Jim Ross while Bobby Heenan is at home. Jim, welcome to Monday nights!"
JR: "Thanks Tony, it's gonna be a heck of an evening here. We saw Mance Warner, 'Ol Mancer, win his opening round match in the Cruiserweight Title tournament and tonight we'll see AJ Styles taking on European legend Johnny Saint and in the other tournament match, the masked luchador Samuray del Sol takes on Christopher Daniels. Tony, a lot of international competition taking place in this Cruiserweight tournament and we know that there's at least one major star from Japan, Jyushin Thunder Liger, heading to the US this week for a tournament match on Saturday Night."
TS: "It's been a great tournament so far and of course that action will culminate next weekend at SuperBrawl but for now, let's go to the ring!"
1.) "Belfast Bruiser" Fit Finlay beat Chris Guy in 2:50 with a Tombstone Piledriver.
- Finlay racks up another impressive win on television, beating local standout Chris Guy in just under the three minute mark.
Following that contest, we're taken to "Mean" Gene Okerlund standing near the entrance ramp as Finlay approaches for his interview.
MGO: "Fit Finlay, first off congratulations on another big victory here on Nitro. You've got a lot of momentum right now, who do you have your sights set on next?"
FF: "Gene, I don't really care. I'll fight anyone but I'll tell you who I want next: the winner of this championship match tonight. Scorpio or Eaton, it don't matter. I want a shot at the Television Champion."
MGO: "Big news from the Bruiser, we'll see who wins the match tonight between two of the hottest stars in WCW!"
2.) WCW Cruiserweight Championship Tournament - Opening Round: Samuray del Sol beat Christopher Daniels in 6:48 with Salida del Sol.
- del Sol may be the favorite to win the tournament just on athleticism alone. He did several dives to the outside of the ring in this match and many of them defy actual description. Daniels was on the defensive for most of the match, never getting a chance to hit his Angel's Wings finisher or the Best Moonsault Ever (I wonder what the World Champion thinks of that...).
3.) The Heavenly Bodies of Stan Lane and Tom Prichard (w/Jim Cornette) beat Tiger Conway Jr. and Stevie Richards in 3:01 when Prichard pinned Conway after a Rocket Launcher.
- As expected, the top ranked tag team in the sport made short work of their opponents as commentary talked up The Rock 'n Roll Express and the upcoming clash at SuperBrawl. Ross also mentioned Bobby Eaton challenging for the Television Championship and as of show time, Cornette not being listed as his manager.
After the match, we see an advertisement for the SuperBrawl Pay-Per-View taking place next week at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida! We're then taken to the cave that we'd previously seen on Saturday Night. A hooded figure talks about shipwrecks, zombies, the end time and the eater of worlds. He turns to the camera, wearing a mask resembling the baphomet. He crosses himself and says the end begins in two weeks.
4.) WCW Cruiserweight Championship Tournament - Opening Round: AJ Styles beat Johnny Saint (w/Zack Sabre Jr.) in 5:55 with the Styles Clash.
- This match was a, no pun intended, styles clash that saw Saint attempting to tie Styles up in knots as his protege, Zack Sabre Jr, watched from the outside. This started out as a great technical battle while Saint was in control but once Styles took the offensive, it was a fast-paced, mostly aerial battle. Styles offered Saint a handshake after the bout, but Saint declined.
After the match, a graphic popped up showing the remaining tournament matches:
Opening Round (Saturday Night): Jyushin Thunder Liger vs. Super Crazy, Juventud Guerrera vs. Pete Dunne
Second Round (next week's Nitro and Saturday Night): Bandido vs. Lash Leroux, Samuray del Sol vs. Mance Warner, Sabu vs. Winner of Liger/Crazy, Styles vs. Winner of Guerrera/Dunne
The Semifinals of the tournament will take place during the Pay-Per-View countdown show and the finals will take place on the Pay-Per-View telecast of SuperBrawl!
We go back to the entrance ramp, where we once again see "Mean" Gene Okerlund.
MGO: "Ladies and gentlemen, it's been a wild night here already on Nitro but at this time I'd like to introduce my guest at this time, the number one contender to the World's Heavyweight Championship, Barry Windham!"
Windham walks out to a standing ovation and shakes hands with Okerlund.
MGO: "Barry, it's good to see you and I've got to ask the tough question: how are you feeling after that attack by Big Van Vader two weeks ago on Saturday Night?"
BW: "Well Gene, I'm still not at a hundred percent and I don't think I'm going to be at SuperBrawl either, but I'm still gonna show up and fight. Vader, you've been hiding from me, doing everything you can do to avoid gettin' in the ring with me. Well...now you can't avoid it anymore. You gave me your best shot, you hit me with the powerbomb on that floor and I'm still here and I'm still ready to go! So you know come SuperBrawl next Sunday night, your best just won't be enough and I'll put you on that mat one way or the other and I will become the WCW World Heavyweight Champion!"
This weekend on WCW Saturday Night, we'll see "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Davey Boy Smith teaming up to take on Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and Curt Hennig ahead of their clash at SuperBrawl! We'll also have more Cruiserweight tournament action featuring Jyushin Thunder Liger from New Japan Pro Wrestling as he takes on Super Crazy from Mexico and in the final first round bout, Mexico's Juventud Guerrera takes on England's Pete Dunne! We'll also see The Rock 'n Roll Express, Mr. Hughes, The Sandman and World's Champion Big Van Vader This Saturday Night!
5.) WCW World Television Championship: 2 Cold Scorpio (ch) beat Bobby Eaton in 7:43 with the Diss That Don't Miss.
- Another excellent title defense from Scorpio as he took down a very-game Bobby Eaton. Thsi was as competitive as the other defenses in Scorpio's reign, but Eaton came closer than most, hitting the Alabama Jam for a near fall on the Champion before Scorpio made his comeback to put Eaton away.
We get a video package of Big Van Vader's Roadkill Tour en route to SuperBrawl, showing him decimating wrestlers at independent shows all over the country before telling Barry Windham this is his fate come next Sunday.
Disco Inferno makes his way out and gets on the microphone and tells everyone that he knows they've been aching to see him in the ring again, but the last time he was in the ring, he had some drunken lunatic chase him out as he was giving the people what they really wanted, a celebration from their hero. Disco tells The Sandman not to interrupt his dancing again or there'll be consequences. Disco's music hits and he begins dancing, presumably for the fans, until The Sandman's music hits and Sandman emerges from under the ring and blasts Disco with the Singapore cane! Disco flees the scene as Sandman poses and we head to commercial break.
Before the main event, Jacques made his way out with Jim Cornette in tow, saying he would take care of The Patriot tonight so it would be 2-on-1 at SuperBrawl.
6.) The Patriot (w/Marcus Alexander Bagwell) beat Jacques (w/Jim Cornette) in 2:10 with The Patriot Missile after accidental interference from Pierre.
- This wasn't a long bout by any means, but it certainly had its fair share of action. Pierre made his way to the ring shortly after the bell and began arguing with Bagwell. At one point, Cornette distracted the referee and Pierre attempted to hit Patriot with the ring bell, but Patriot ducked which caused Pierre to hit Jacques! Stars and Stripes Forever celebrated after the match as...
Our cameras go to the parking lot, where Hugh Morris, holding a 2x4, is standing over a bloodied "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. Security and other personnel rush to get Morris away from Duggan and to get medical attention and folks...we're out of time for this episode of Monday Nitro!
