Beat the Bug Showdown: Indie Men Tournament 04.02.2020 from Chicago, IL
Josh Briggs vs. Anthony Greene Anthony Greene defeated Josh Briggs with a SHAKER HEIGHTS SPIKE at 28:52 Match Rating: 4.50 Match Notes: What a way to kick off the tournament. Briggs went big early and scored a near fall with his finisher, but Greene would come back and they went back and forth with punishing moves and strikes the whole match. Neither man had any trouble pulling out the big comeback when needed and both scored near fall after near fall.
There was a decent amount of brawling on the outside as well and one big spot that had fans on the edge of their seats saw Briggs catch Green with a big elbow when Retro tried for a suicide dive. Briggs then took him in and went for the cover but only got a 2-count!
Time was ticking away on this one and after 28 minutes of hard-hitting action, the finishing stretch saw Greene capitalize on the worn down big man with a Tamagotchi Driver and then hit the SHAKER HEIGHTS SPIKE for a big win.
These guys nearly went the distance at the risk of neither moving on, but AG pulls it out in the end. Incredible contest!
AR Fox vs. Curt Stallion AR Fox defeated Curt Stallion with a KRUNCH at 5:28 Match Rating: 2.25 Match Notes: You have to admire Stallion's toughness. While this was a one-sided affair, it took everything Fox had including multiple finishers to get this win.
Fox attacked strong at bell and had Stallion on the ropes immediately. An AR-KO and multiple LO MEIN PAINs scored near falls but Stallion kept kicking out. He would roll outside only to get crushed by a plancha from Fox followed it with the KRUNCH for the 1,2, 3!
Sami Callihan vs. Moose Sami Callihan defeated Moose with a CUERNO KILLER at 7:51 Match Rating: 3.50 Match Notes: Solid bout that saw Callihan use the many tricks at his disposal to keep himself alive in the face of the onslaught Moose kept trying to build to.
Callihan started strong with some strikes, but Moose came back and kept himself more than alive, dishing out some punishment.
They jockeyed for position at the midway point and Moose started building some momentum after avoiding Callihan's signature spit hand chop.
Sami got desperate and rolled outside. He slammed Moose into the apron and post and then took him inside and hit the CUERNO KILLER for a near fall! A STRETCH MUFFLER had Moose fighting for survival and he reached the ropes. But Callihan followed up with another CUERNO KILLER to secure the 1, 2, 3 and advance.
Eddie Edwards vs. Michael Elgin LE Michael Elgin LE defeated Eddie Edwards with an ELGIN BOMB at 2:01 Match Rating: 2.00 Match Notes: Edwards went strong right off the bat and and tried to keep Elgin down. He even his a big tiger suplex, but Elgin ducked a lariat and hit a big buckle bomb for a near fall!
He followed it up immediately with an ELGIN BOMB to get a decisive win.
TomLawlor vs. Mance Warner TomLawlor defeated Mance Warner with a REAR NAKED CHOKE at 17:09 Match Rating: 4.25 Match Notes: This was a great match! Lawlor was in charge in a big way for the opening minutes and it looked like he might get an early win with the MASTER BLASTER, but Warner was incredibly resilient.
After absorbing ungodly amounts of punishment and even getting busted open on the outside, Warner came back! They went move for move and strike for strike until Warner took full control and even hit two KNEE PAD UP/KNEE PAD DOWN but to no avail.
Lawlor almost scored a pin out of nowhere off the ropes and it allowed him the momentum swing he needed to score with a REAR NAKED CHOKE, but Warner reached the ropes! MASTER BLASTER 1, 2, NO! Wow!
REAR NAKED CHOKE and a bloody Warner has no choice but fade away at this point and Tom Lawlor moves on with this hard-fought win.
Davey Boy Smith Jr vs. Brian Pillman Jr Brian Pillman Jr defeated Davey Boy Smith Jr with a Death Valley Driver at 1:42 Match Rating: 1.50 Match Notes: Whoa! DBS came out strong and pummeled Pillman with a shoulder tackle, punches and then tossed him into the corner. But Pillman lifted a knee to the oncoming Smith and then hit a shocking Death Valley Driver for a flash pin!
Smith was hot, but Pillman made a quick escape raising his hands as he moves on in the tournament!
PCO vs. Rush PCO defeated Rush with a PCO SAULT at 10:54 Match Rating: 3.75 Match Notes: Nice match. They went back and forth for the majority of the bout, but it was PCO who kept getting the better of Rush and scored with big moves including his finisher.
They brawled outside and both men attempted dives, but only PCO hit.
Rush was taking a beating, but tried to make a comeback only to be met with the turnbuckle post and another PCO SAULT for the 1, 2, 3!
Jonathan Gresham vs. Jay Lethal Jonathan Gresham defeated Jay Lethal with an OCTOPUS STRETCH at 0:27 Match Rating: 0.00 Match Notes: Whoa! This has to be seen as a huge upset.
Lethal went to clip the knee, Gresham pushed him into the turnbuckle, hit a huge neck snapping lariat, and then locked in the OCTOPUS STRETCH in the middle of the ring!
Lethal tapped immediately and was holding his neck after the match. Even Gresham was shocked. Huge win to move on in the tournament!
Anthony Greene vs. AR Fox AR Fox defeated Anthony Greene with a KRUNCH at 14:18 Match Rating: 3.75 Match Notes: Fox put on an incredible athletic display, but Greene showed again his resilience by taking the best AR Fox had and still coming back for more.
Fox started to wonder what he was going to have to do to put him away and then finally sealed the deal with multiple LO MEIN PAINs and the KRUNCH to get the 1, 2, 3.
Sami Callihan vs. Michael Elgin LE Michael Elgin LE defeated Sami Callihan with a buckle bomb at 24:13 Match Rating: 5.00 Match Notes: Stone cold classic from these two. They went hold for hold, move for move, strike for strike in the opening minutes. Then one would take over and pummel the other until the momentum shifted the other way.
It was an incredible display from both and just when you thought it might be over, they kicked it into another gear.
Too many great moments to list. Elgin thought he had it after Sami missed a dive and hit the ELGIN BOMB but only got a 2! He slapped on a cross face but Sami made it to the ropes!
Big Mike was beside himself. Somehow Sami cam back and was able to rock Elgin with multiple blows including a power bomb and huge bicycle kick!
He slapped on the STRETCH MUFFLER, but couldn't score the tap out! Frustration and exhaustion set in and he went for a face wash only to be caught up in the ropes after Elgin moved. Elgin then worked him over and slapped on another cross face to no avail.
Finally a savage buckle bomb nearly knocked Sami out and Elgin scored the 1, 2, 3.
Incredible stuff. This one will be hard to top.
[Sami - 5 tokens, Elgin - 4 tokens]
Brian Pillman Jr vs. TomLawlor TomLawlor defeated Brian Pillman Jr with a REAR NAKED CHOKE at 19:34 Match Rating: 4.50 Match Notes: This was such a great contest. Brian Pillman Jr. gave it his all and Tom Lawlor was lucky to escape with the win here.
Lawlor went right after him at the bell and locked in a fujiwara arm bar. Pillman rolled out after reaching the ropes and suckered Lawlor out. He took advantage and posted Lawlor and then tried to steal one with DIRE PROMISE, but Lawlor would kick out.
Pillman then put him to the test with a constant stream of offense and multiple pin fall attempts, but Lawlor would not stay down!
Lawlor had his flurries including a REAR NAKED CHOKE out of no where, but it wasn't enough.
They see-sawed until Lawlor ducked a lariat and dropped Pillman with a German suplex! He hit a few big moves including the Cleveland Steamer '18 and then locked in a REAR NAKED CHOKE to finally seal the deal.
Lawlor walks away with the win but at what cost?
[Pillman - 3 tokens, Lawlor - 6 tokens!]
PCO vs. Jonathan Gresham PCO defeated Jonathan Gresham with a DQ at 8:31 Match Rating: 2.00 Match Notes: You read that right. Jonathan Gresham was disqualified agains PCO. PCO dominated Gresham, but Gresham kept kicking out of everything, including the PCO SAULT.
PCO was frustrated and tossed Gresham from the ring. Gresham was also frustrated and wounded to boot. Out of desperation, he grabbed a chair and tried to fend off PCO and felt he had no choice but to take a swing and clock PCO in the head!
The ref called for the bell. Shame things end this way for Gresham. PCO moves on.
Michael Elgin LE vs. AR Fox AR Fox defeated Michael Elgin LE with a DQ at 1:37 Match Rating: 0.00 Match Notes: Oof... This did not go the way anyone thought it would or wanted it to.
Elgin came out with the bombs and leveled Fox with a buckle bomb, lariat, and black hole slam. Fox rolled out and Elgin was on the rampage after him and grabbed a chair! Does Fox owe him money? Seriously, he waffled him with the chair like he didn't even care about the DQ.
AR Fox moves on.
TomLawlor vs. PCO PCO defeated TomLawlor with a chokeslam at 14:18 Match Rating: 3.25 Match Notes: Hellacious match and PCO continued to lay down beatings as Lawlor absorbed inhuman amounts of punishment but it wasn't quite enough.
Lawlor tried to get some offense started, but PCO was in monster mode and nothing seemed to stop his path of destruction.
After multiple pin fall attempts and all the wear and tear from earlier matches, Lawlor finally fell to a choke slam. PCO is in the finals.
AR Fox vs. PCO PCO defeated AR Fox with a stiff lariat at 0:18 Match Rating: 0.00 Match Notes: Wow... PCO charged AR Fox with a stiff lariat at the bell, made the cover and got the 1, 2, 3. Unreal. A letdown at the end of the tournament. Between the DQs and this, things, unfortunately, fizzled out.
But PCO is your Beat the Bug Showdown Indie Men Tournament winner!
Overall Card Rating: 2.68 Match of the Night: Michael Elgin vs Sami Callihan Honorable Mention: Tom Lawlor vs Brian Pillman Jr

TRADITION Proudly Presents
BEAT THE BUG SHOWDOWN Crunchy's Bar East Lansing, Michigan April 4th 2020 OPENING ROUND RESULTS
ANTHONY GREENE vs. JOSH BRIGGS "A tremendous pace to this match to open up the Tournament, and Greene looked to end it quickly via his spring board cutter but it would not be enough as Briggs would not only refuse to be pinned after it connected, he would then take full control of the match first with a nasty big boot to the face followed up with a single arm choke slam right in the center of the ring! Greene would be held down for the three count as Briggs would advance." A.R. FOX vs. CURT STALLION "One of the most anticipated matches maybe of the entire tournament turned into a bad night for Fox as very early on when attempting Air Fox to the outside the former evolve champion would land badly outside the ring as Stallion moved out of the way...Fox would grab his left knee in pain, Stallion would take a moment then toss Fox back in the ring and connect with his BUCK OFF Finisher for the victory to advance but the concern was for A.R> Fox as medics quicly came into the ring after the match and rushed him to the back" SAMI CALLIHAN vs. MOOSE "Hard hitting impact by these two from the jump and after just slugging it out in the center of the ring to a stale mate, Sami would deliver a bicycle kick to the face followed by a forearm to the face to think that he had the advantage but it was not long till Moose proved otherwise who nearly got the victory thanks to a high jump corner dropkick!
Sami would survive and eventually get to advance in the Tournament thanks to Moose charging shoulder first into the steel post right into the STRETCH MUFFLER submission which Moose did not tap to but did pass out so the official had no choice but to call for the bell." MICHEAL ELGIN vs. EDDIE EDWARDS "These two are no strangers to one another and they just started throwing bombs at each other in the center of the ring as soon as the bell sounded to begin the match, Elgin would get the better of the exchange which would lead to a nasty forearm busting the nose of BIG MIKE who responded with a nasty buckle bomb for a NEAR fall
In the end it was Edwards with his Die Hard that would get the best of Elgin for the victory!" MANCE WARNER vs. "FILTHY" TOM LAWLOR "Old Mancer would offer Tom a light beer to begin the match which the former MMA standout would accept only to spit it back in the face of his opponent, the fight was on at that point with Mance taking it outside the ring, he would slam Lawlor on the concrete and stomp right on his head and toss him back in the ring and mock the MMA style of Tom before laying a stiff right hand across the leader of Team Filthy's face!
Warner would then get caught coming off the ropes with a discuss clothesline that nearly took his head off and very well could have knocked him out and as soon as Warner hit the mat, Lawlor would apply his REAR NAKED CHOKE Submission for the win." BRIAN PILLMAN JR. vs. DAVEY BOY SMITH JR. "A huge embrace between the two to begin the match, and a back and fourth technical match between them in the early stages but Pillman seemed to get a little aggravated when Davey Boy Jr. connected with a stiff shoulder tackle and then mounted him and delivered some real stiff punches that busted his nose open before Brian tossed him off..Pillman saw his blood and then delivered a knee strike and a super kick and he thought he had the match won after his Death Valley Driver planted Davey right on his head!
Smith however would just kick out before the three which Brian was frustrated by as he questioned the officials count, this gave time for Davey Boy to recover and deliver a Northern Lights suplex dropping Brian hard into the corner...then Smith would deliver his powerslam out of said corner for the hard fought victory" PCO vs RUSH "A contrast of styles here but what a contest, Rush would start quickly thanks to a shotgun dropkick followed up quickly with a picture perfect elbow drop from the top rope but that however only angered PCO who not only kicked out at one but took control of the offense thanks to a head butt to the chest followed up by a DDT dropping his opponent right on his head! PCO would then crush Rush in the corner thanks to his suicide cannonball BUT the pin attempt would only get a two count to the amazement of everyone!
PCO was furious and once again went for his cannonball but this time Rush would move and and PCO would go crashing into the corner and get a basement dropkick to the face by Rush who then would deliver a frog splash from the top rope landing right on the head of his opponent to get a three count to advance!" JONATHAN GRESHAM vs. JAY LETHAL "Gresham had Lethal on the ropes pretty much on the ropes this entire match using everything he had in his arsenal but Jay would continue to fight out of everything despite what looked like an injury to his left shoulder early on in the match. Gresham was getting very frustrated and thought he finally put down the ROH legend for good after connecting with a superkick followe up with his shooting star press but no Lethal would not stay down.
Finally Jay would get his offense in via his LETHAL INJECTION and as he was going for the pin the bell sounded as the time limit had expired eliminating both men from the tournament to end round one!" SECOND ROUND RESULTS JOSH BRIGGS vs CURT STALLION "These two young stars continue to EVOLVE right before our very eyes as Stallion did not back down from the pure intensity that Briggs brought to the table as amatter of fact Curt used that to his advantage as he took the heavy hits of Briggs throughout the beginning of the match which included a belly to belly gut buster AND a Go to Hell that everyone in the building but the official gave Briggs the win.
Frustration set in for the big man as he went for his over the post dive but missed as Stallion moved and Briggs crashed hard into the guard rail! Curt then took his opponent back in the ring and began stomping him in the corner. Briggs would show his toughness and fight back with fists a plenty dropping Stallion. Josh would climb to the top rope BUT Stallion would quickly follow him and connect with his TOP ROPE REVERSE SPANISH FLY Finisher for an amazing ending to the match and move on in the Tournament." SAMI CALLIHAN vs. EDDIE EDWARDS "These two rivals went at it once again and they did it with big smiles on their faces, Edwards right away went outside the ring to meet Sami as he entered the ring and the two brawled all over the building busting each other open in the process. Knowing the history between the two the official let a lot go..Edwards would eventually get Sami back in the ring and deliver a nasty knee strike to the face!
A double stomp from the top rope from Edwards looked like the end for Callihan but the Ohio native refused to stay down..Ediie came off the ropes and got caught with a nasty lariat that looked as though rattled a few teeth..Sami brushed aside his blood coming down his face and connected with a Death Valley Driver right in the center of the ring for the hard fought victory" DAVEY BOY SMITH JR. vs. "FILTHY" TOM LAWLOR "Hard hitting strong style MMA style pro wrestling between these two, many in attendance said this was the match of the tournament and they were glad it did not go to a time limit draw...for the first several minutes it was some great chain wrestling with neither man getting an out right advantage...until...
Lawlor caught Davey flush with a spinning heel kick followed by a wrist clutch exploder suplex dropping Smith right on the back of his head! Davey however refused Lawlor to apply a submission and fight back with a few stiff rights and lefts as he delivered a suplex of his own of the Northern Lights variety, Tom was knocked loopy for a few moments and Davey thought he had the match won via his powerslam but the filthy one sneaked his right shoulder up before the three count.
As Tom got to his feet and leaned into the corner Smith quickly charged but missed his target as Lawlor moved and Davey crashed his shoulder right into the steel post which led to the Filthy applying his Fujiwara arm bar for the submission tap out win!" RUSH GETS A BYE INTO THE SEMI-FINALS WITH THE LETHAL & GRESHAM TIME LIMIT DRAW SEMI FINAL RESULTS SAMI CALLIHAN vs. CURT STALLION "Stallion came in with a smug attitude but quickly got the taste slapped out of his mouth by Sami..which angered Curt who busted the cut open on Sami's forehead from his last battle and quickly went for the kill via a nasty German suplex followed by his buck off, which left Callihan reeling for a moment Curt however decided to mock his opponent instead of going for the kill and well Sami did NOT make that mistake as he took down Stallion via a spinning GTS for the victory and a spot in the FINALS!" 'FILTHY" TOM LAWLOR vs. RUSH "Rush came in like a house of fire catching Tom off guard with a release belly to belly suplex right out off the jump, then quickly followed up with a shot gun drop kick right in the face knocking him back into the corner!
A super plex attempt was blocked on the top rope and Lawlor then delivered a stiff knee strike which had Rush crash to the mat off the top rope, Lawlor then would deliver a knee strike again from the top rope and he would then hit his Death Valley Driver for a NEAR fall!
Rush would duck a discuss clothesline attempt by Lawlor and attempted a snap German but Lawlor returned the favor and blocked it and caught Rush in his REAR NAKED CHOKE Submission in the center of the ring which Rush had no escape for as Lawlor got the victory!" FINALS
SAMI CALLIHAN vs. "FILTHY" TOM LAWLOR "Both men exhausted, stood in the middle of the ring face to face ready to fight, Sami despite a bandaged taped to his forehead soaked in blood got the upperhand early on thanks to a knee strike followed up by a sit out power bomb for a quick near fall! The Draw then would toss Tom out of the ring and deliver a cannon ball off the ring apron onto his opponent to the wood floor at ringside. Sami then would toss him back to the ring and climb to the top rope flip off Lawlor with an attempted elbow drop but just like that he would get caught coming down right into a REAR NAKED CHOKE Finisher!
Sami would fight and claw to try and reach the ropes but to no avail as after a few moments he would indeed pass out for a rather quick victory for "FILTHY" TOM LAWLOR"

Some of the tournaments (such as the LOW ladies tournament) I am not able to play because I don't think I have all the cards yet needed for them. All the tournaments are great and I have really enjoyed playing the ones I played earlier. But for me, I saved this tournament until today because I really wanted to save the Indie Men for last.
