SEASON 17 RESULTS
JANUARY: Barry Windham b. Harley Race with the Lariat to end Harley Race's reign only 1 month into it in a sensational match (*****!! MATCH OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE!). This bout had so many twists and turns to it, it was hard to keep up. Race wore a crimson mask from all the blows Windham rained down upon him, but gallantly fought back time after time to stave off his execution. Windham was just relentless, however, and was not going to be denied, even surviving back to back vertical suplexes from the former champion at one point. Just a classic title match to which the Springfield fans were treated.
On the undercard, in a rematch from Season 16, the October card, Wild Bull Curry b. 'Da Crusher with a chair smash (***). Curry continues to frustrate the Crusher....and every other WWA hero for that matter (Tony Atlas is 0-5 against him!), and is probably starting to at least sniff a title shot. Crusher will have to wait to gain a measure of revenge.
Up next for our newly crowned champion is a scheduled defense against Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, which will come to you live and in living color next month from Topeka, KS.

FEBRUARY: Barry Windham d. Greg Valentine with the Lariat to retain the WWA World Heavyweight Championship in a great match (****1/4). Boy, did "The Hammer" have his chances in this one WWA fans! Multiple times he had our champion on the ropes (literally and figuratively), and at one point had strapped in the Figure Four Leglock for what seemed like the duration. But Windham dug deep, showing incredible intestinal fortitude, and battered the Hammer from pillar to post in an amazing comeback that had the Topeka faithful leaving their seats in exultation! When Windham nailed Valentine with the Lariat for the win, the roof nearly blew off the arena!
No rest for the weary, however, WWA fans, as our champion must lick his wounds and head to St. Louis next month for a scheduled defense against Angelo Poffo. Poffo gave Lou Thesz all he could handle recently, and promises to be no slouch in this next battle for the WWA crown!
Windham: 1 Title Defense.

MARCH: Barry Windham b. Angelo Poffo with the Lariat to successfully defend the WWA World Heavyweight Championship, defeating a game challenger this evening (**3/4). In his last 2 matches, Angelo Poffo took Lou Thesz deep in one match, and threatened Windham's title reign early in another. Poffo had Windham stunned, but couldn't get the 1-2-3. Unfortunately for Poffo, who used whatever he had at his disposal (legal or otherwise) to try and capitalize on this, Windham showed incredible resilience, and once he got his bearings, that was all she wrote. Poffo nearly flipped from the impact of the Lariat, which put him down for the count.
Our champion will be heading back to Kansas City next month for a rematch with Harley Race, from whom he won the title in January. Can the rematch live up to their first match?? Stay tuned!
Windham: 2 Title Defenses.

APRIL: Harley Race b. Barry Windham with a Vertical Suplex to win the rematch with Windham, and re-capture the WWA World Heavyweight Championship (**3/4). Well, the rematch between these 2 didn't live up to their first clash, as it was Race who exerted his will early on, and controlled the match throughout. Race is one of the all-time greats in WWA history, and he truly showed it tonight. Will there be a Race-Windham III?? Stay tuned!
Folks, we've got a little extra time this evening, so we're going to take you live to WWA HQ in St. Louis, for a feud rematch for the St. Louis Heavyweight Title. Rick Martel DQ Stan Hansen when the big Cowboy destroyed Martel outside of the ring....and destroyed everything else in his path for that matter...as this feud just continues to heat up! So far, there has not be a clean finish/victory for either competitor. Hansen got under Martel's skin in this one, as Martel decided to fight fire with fire, and went to Fist City to try and put Hansen in his place. This is exactly what Hansen wanted, however....a Pier 6 Brawl....and it led to the DQ, as well as Martel being pummeled! This feud rages on!
As for our newly crowned World Champion, he will head to Charlotte, NC next month for his first scheduled defense against "Hands of Stone" Ronnie Garvin. And on the undercard, our WWA World Tag-Team Champions Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens will defend their titles against former WWA Tag Champs The Armstrongs!

MAY: Harley Race b. Ronnie Garvin in a great match with the Vertical Suplex to retain the WWA World Heavyweight Championship (****1/4). Just a really great match WWA fans! Garvin came out like a house-on-fire pounding away at our champion, and trying to make the bout into a Pier 6 brawl early. Race proved quite adept at that concept, and gave as good as he received, finally wearing Garvin out, and putting him away with the Suplex. There's a reason that Race is one of the all-time greats in WWA, and he once again showed his great intestinal fortitude!
On the undercard, champions Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens b. The Armstrongs with the Figure Four Leglock to retain the WWA World Tag-Team Championship (**3/4). The Armstrongs are former WWA Tag Champs themselves, and are no slouches, but Bockwinkel and Stevens were not to be denied tonight! They worked like a well-oiled machine in defeating the challengers.
Our champion Harley Race will travel to Greensboro, NC next month for a scheduled defense against the evil Fritz Von Goering. This may be one of the few times Race hears the cheers of the crowd!
Race: 1 Title Defense.

JUNE: Harley Race b. Fritz Von Goering with a flying headbutt to retain the WWA World Heavyweight Championship in relatively easy fashion tonight (**1/4). Von Goering got in his licks, to be sure, but tonight the champ was taking no prisoners, and made pretty tidy work of the challenger, dispatching him with the head butt in short order. As we thought, for once Race was the one to hear the cheers of the crowd this evening, as Von Goering is not on anyone's list of fan favorites!
Our champion will next head to Richmond, VA for a scheduled defense in July against the great Dick Hutton.
Race: 2 Title Defenses.

JULY: Harley Race DQ Dick Hutton when Hutton was disqualified for too much of the rough stuff, after the action spilled out of the ring (**3/4). Our champion has a habit of getting under his opponent's skin, and Race certainly did so this evening, agitating the great Hutton enough that he went to "Fist City"! Hutton had a chance early on in this match to gain a 1-2-3, but Race kicked out, and lived to fight another day. Some might even wonder if Race deliberately pushed Hutton to the brink for the DQ just to hold on to that World Title....hmmmmm…
Up next for our resourceful champion is another rematch with rival Barry Windham, their 3rd in recent times. Match 1 was a classic, while Match 2 failed to live up to that standard. Will Match 3 deliver? We'll see you next month, live from St. Louis!
Race: 3 Title Defenses.
