when a sleeperhold is applied for a win is a countout or a win by submission? A 'count out finish' equals the losing wrestler being physically 'outside' the ring beyond the time the referee allows. It is a loss based on a rule consequence. A 'submission finish' can either be voluntary or involuntary. Before the emergence of Mixed Martial Arts most of the submissions in pro wres were either verbal or involuntary (ie. a ref check for consciousness while in a sleeper hold). In the early 90's MMA organizations such as the UFC & Pride began to proliferate. The wrestling industry was heavily influenced by the freshness/popularity of the content and promotions throughout the world began to adopt the styles and finishes into their products. The growth of submission finishes where wrestlers physically 'tap out' is one of the most universal and lingering examples.
