National Novel Writing Month 2021

Each year I’ve participated in National Novel Writing Month, and with NaNo approaching, I thought I’d see if anyone else might be interested.

National Novel Writing Month is an event each November, where the goal is to write a 50,000 word novel in a month, any subject, any genre. It was created years ago to encourage people who may have always wanted to write a book but either lacked the confidence or just couldn’t get started. The idea is that you’re writing at such a frantic pace, you don’t have time for self doubt or writer’s block.

This is my fifth year, though last year I pulled any cheap tricks to win because I had such a hard time concentrating. This year though I’m challenging myself with something a little out of my comfort zone in hopes of finishing this time.

I keep thinking about doing it again even though we have a toddler now. I've completed it six times in the past but I think 2012 was the last time I did it. The fastest I ever hit 50k was ten days but my brain felt like oatmeal for a few days after.

If I do it this year, I'm going to try a horror novel. I've done three crime and three fantasy in the years that I've finished.

My other half used to do it but never liked the pressure. They prefer writing stories for the story not just for a specific deadline and amount of words.

I tried it a couple times but life would just get too busy that I moved to other things well before it was over.
