NFL Hall of Fame coach, broadcasting icon John Madden dies at 85
Hall of Fame coach turned broadcaster John Madden, whose exuberant calls combined with simple explanations provided a weekly soundtrack to NFL games for three decades, died Tuesday morning, the NFL said. He was 85.
"On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
"Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today."
Madden was only 32 when then-Raiders owner Al Davis hired him to coach Oakland in 1969. Before leaving the sideline for the announcing booth in 1978, Madden led Oakland to a stellar 103-32-7 regular-season record and victory in the Super Bowl after the 1976 season.
Oakland never had a losing record under Madden, winning seven division titles and making the playoffs eight times.
Madden was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006, 28 years after coaching his final game. A fear of flying helped contribute to his early retirement from coaching.
But Madden gained even more fame as an analyst on NFL telecasts and for the football video game that bears his name -- EA Sports' "Madden NFL." Some players who have graced the Madden cover have struggled the following season, spurring the fan myth of the "Madden curse."

The timing is wild seeing that ESPN just did a special on his life and influence. Growing up for me his voice was one of the signs of weekends and fall. A true icon.

A true legend who did so much as a coach, announcer and overall ambassador for the game.

This one stings. As a huge Oakland Raiders fan (and LA and Vegas too) this is a major loss, and also a major loss to football as a whole. Talk about a legend.
On Christmas this past Saturday I watched the 90-minute special aired on FOX in the afternoon and was so happy to see him, at 85, enjoying himself watching some of his career and life highlights back. Hearing he passed away just days later is crazy.
RIP Coach John Madden and thank you for all of the awesome memories both coaching and announcing, plus video gaming as well. One of a kind.

R.I.P., Mr. Madden!
Without him, there would be no Madden NFL Football video game!
I had hoped he'd broadcast just ONE MORE TIME at a Super Bowl, it was always fun to hear him on the airwaves, with his "Maddenisms", LOL!
What an influential man, coach of some great legends of the game, and a more famous name than the legendary great HOWARD COSELL!
I can't even begin to imagine the world of football had he not become a coach, broadcaster, etc. The entire landscape of football would not be the same, that much is certain!
